Diner Reviews
  • "I took my girlfriend here for her birthday and we loved it! I had never eaten here before, but I've heard really good things about this restaurant. We had reservations, and got there about 10 mintutes early. They were not busy, and were able to seat us right away. I noticed the ambience right away, the lighting was dimmed which made for a really nice romantic setting. We started with the Calamari, which came in a delightful hot & sweet sauce with wasabi cream. Watch out, because the Wasabi cream has a bit of a kick! My girlfriend had the Filet Mignon, and I had the Skillet Fried Quail. My Quail was great, but the Filet was absolutely phenomenal! I believe I'll order that next time. They had Stella on draft, which was a big plus also!"

  • "The food, service and ambience all met our expectations. An excellent dining experience; even offered closed parking in a garage immediately behind the restaurant. We were visiting Wilmington, Charleston and Beaufort intending to dine in topnotch restaurants and Circa 1922 certainly met that criteria in charming Wilmington. Definitely can recommend this restaurant to anyone interested in a fine dining experience."

  • "We've been dining at circa for years. The last meal left much to be desired. The bread is always amazing without fail. The new menu offers their once normal sized dinner entrees as "small plates" - smaller dishes with increased prices. My dish came out cold which only shows it is not cooked but microwaved. I sent it back. Normally the chef will start over. My dish was further microwaved. Came back warm but disappointed at the lack of attention. Seems more like a tourist place to shuffle diners in and out rather than the quality restaurant it once was."

  • "Dinner started off on a low note with the hostess who rolled her eyes when we asked for an alternate table. The waiter was excellent, walked us through the menu and explained various items. The mushroom bruschetta, tasty, the carpaccio beef, melt in your mouth - unfortunately the Gouda cheese, though 'cave aged', had no tyrosine clusters, but did have bits of rind. We had several small plates, a salad, bottle of wine and then two entrees. The roasted monkfish was rather bland, but not bad. The three scallops as a 'large plate' left something to be desired. I have had wonderful scallops and had these scallops been *wonderful* I would have been happy to pay $6/per, but they were average."

  • "Went to dine with friends from the area and they suggested Circa 1922. Meal was very good, and a value during restaurant week. Three of us went with the RW set menu, my wife ordered a la carte. My wife enjoyed the scallops, but was disappointed that there were only three on the plate - seems small for a main dish - especially at non-restaurant week price. Service was very good. All in all, an excellent dining experience in Wilmington"

  • "The food here was excellent. I ordered the Meyers Lemon Chicken, I didn't really find a lemony taste but rather a very smokey taste. I don't care for smokey food but my daughter thought it was delicious. The chicken was very tender and the sides were yummy. My daughter ordered the steak which I have had before and it was very good. We both had desert, the almond joy cake was very rich and delish. The creme brule, is definitely big enough to share with 2-3 people and was delish as well. The service was excellent. I really enjoy eating here."

  • "This restaurant was nice! The food is tapas style which throw me off little. The service was good, the food was good. We ordered the salad which was fabulous, satay chicken was ok, bread with goat cheese was very good, Filet mignon, chicken with pasta which was in thick cream sauce. Overall ambiance was nice! Great little restaurant."

  • "Full restaurant, lively place, good food. A piano player added to the ambiance of the great old building."

  • "This restaurant was good but not great. We enjoyed our meal and the atmosphere was nice for a quiet dinner"

  • "Fabulous location, fantastic food, terrific service. Live piano player. On the noisy side, but the menu, bar and wine selection more than compensate. If you have a day or two in Wilmington, make this a priority for evening dining."

  • "Excellent service that didn't make you feel rushed, very attentive. All the food was exquisite, save the shrimp and grits, which was without taste and the shrimp were way overcooked. Other than that minor detail it was wonderful. We will be back for sure!"

  • "This was the restaurant for my wife and I for our 44th wedding anniversary. We thoroughly enjoyed the ambiance as well as the wonderful tapas menu. The wine list is superb. I would highly recommend this restaurant for any special occasion."

  • "The food was outstanding. Unfortunately, we sat a long time before being approached by wait staff. Also, only bathroom is on the second floor and we were directed to a stairway, difficult for seniors. Later, we found out there was an elevator. Apparently the problem was a ditsy hostess staff. But, terrific food."

  • "Love the upstairs hallway was in keeping with the architecture of 1922 time frame. Also, would like to say that our waitstaff was spot on with service, we wanted for nothing and timing was always perfect!"

  • "Had a wonderful time. Came for the Paella and it was excellent. Service was over the top and could not have been happier. Not a big wine drinker but found a great wine that was perfect for me. I will be back."

  • "Smallest filet mignon I have ever received in a restaurant. It should have been an appetizer. I would have preferred to pay $5-$10 more for a larger cut of meat."

  • "We dined here on Valentine's day this year. Typically we love the restaurant, the food, the atmosphere. This experience was far beneath their usual service and menu. In all fairness, the restaurant did call us a few days prior to our coming and tell us that the menu would be different. We were okay with that because the food and dessert is usually amazing. When we arrived the place was busy (as expected) and we were seated in between two other couples. The six of us might as well have dined together, at least we could have shared a bottle of wine. It felt like the restaurant had squeezed extra tables in to accommodate the Valentine's day crowd. The service was not great. And the menu was lackluster. Just don't go on Valentine's day"

  • "Circa is an excellent choice for that anniversary or romantic special occasion. The staff is attentive and professional, the food is spectacular! Just provide someone special to share it with you, and you have a recipe for an amazing evening!"

  • "came to visit my mother, we have dined here before, I feel that Sunday may have not been the best day to go. The cheese and charcuterie, which we love to eat, was served on all little seperate plates rather than one composed plate for us to dine on, thought it was weird having 6 little plates, plus all our bread plates and glassware trying to fit on a small table. it was odd. food was pretty good, no 'specials' on sundays, but I understood. we will be back, hoping next time we go during the week or weekend, if I can make it there those days. sunday just was sort of disappointing for what we spent."

  • "We arrived on time and asked for a larger table. They complied and we ordered appetizers and drinks. Our waiter was very friendly and recommended several dishes. Our food arrived hot and presented well. They did not rush us and we 6 had an enjoyable time. I would recommend this restaurant to my friends"

  • "Food was very good. Loved the spicy take on calamari. Lobster risotto was good. Partner enjoyed the filet mignon. Look forward to returning to have tapas, a more casual meal. Service provided by Cat was very attentive and pleasant."

  • "Not only was the food very affordably priced for its outstanding quality but the ambience was ideal for taking my wife on a romantic date. All three courses of our meal were delicious and the portion sizes were just right. Definitely recommend this dining experience and plan to go back myself!"

  • "While I have been to Circa before with a large group this was the first time with just my wife. We had reservations but still had to wait about 10 minutes. Not too bad I guess considering they were very busy. Overall the food and service were very good. Nothing was 5 stars, but everything was well prepared and presented."

  • "Circa1922, is a popular eatery in down town Wilmington. The food is great, the atmosphere is fun and lively. If you don't care for noise, ask to be seated up stairs. The food is served in the Spanish tapas style, the best way the enjoy the fair is to order a couple of dishes each and share with everyone at your table. Circa has a good bar, with a plentiful drink selection to include local beer and wine. I recommend this establishment to anyone, but this is not a child friendly location. Please leave your children at home. If you plan on visiting Thursday - Saturday go ahead and make reservations."

  • "Valentine's day menu was pre fixe which we were not informed about at the time of the reservation. Menu was ok but not for someone who does not eat meat or was a vegetarian. They did prepare a vegetarian substitute but the choices were limited. The food was well prepared but the it was not worth the price of the meal ($48 per person). We have eaten here many times in the past and their regular menu is very good with much variety. If we had known about the pre fixe menu we probably would not have made this reservation."

  • "As usual, Circa did great! Bring a flashlight to read the menu (or your phone app), but other than that...GREAT!"
    Dined on 2/9/2014
  • "It was over all good but too pricey for the amount of food served. One of my guests who got the fillet mignon had such a tiny amount that even trying to eat really slow he had to sit and watch the other 3 of us finish eating. At $20.00 for his plate (salad is extra) he should have been served more than a few bites of food. The food was good and I'm glad we tried it once but wouldn't do dinner there again."

  • "Having dined at this restaurant in the past we have never had a bad meal. I think they had a recent staff change in the kitchen. The flavor profiles were a little overpowering. Will try again."

  • "I Google the best restaurants in Wilmington, NC frequently and always skip this place. After viewing the menu choices, we gave it a try. For the quality of food you receive, the prices are fair. I ordered the filet mignon and it was awesome. Our server knew the menu, and recommended a great cocktail. Anyway, great place to go for a romantic dinner...just don't sit by the door in February. They had no peoblem reseating us."

  • "Meeting friends before going to a show at Thallien Hall, we wanted a nice dinner within a short walk. Circa 1922 was perfect for the occasion. None of us had been there before and all were pleased with the wine list, the service, the fare and the ambiance. The prices for appetizers and entrees were very affordable, even surprising for such an elegant atmosphere. We all enjoyed our dinner together at Circa 1922."
