Diner Reviews
  • "Always extraordinary!! Each visit brings a new revelation: the last, bison 'meatloaf'... Delicious!"

  • "Probably the most sophisticated menu on the peninsula. Although it is almost an hour drive from my home to circa 1918 we do it several times a year. And that means driving past many good to very good restaurants. Great drinks, super wine list creative chef( and they are good) and deserts if you have any room left."

  • "I heard about this restaurant from a friend. My collegues and I decided we would try it out after a long day at work. The place is not very big at all. But the service was very good and the server was very nice and polite. However when we looked online to check out the menu there was a big difference in the prices. I decided on the lamb burger but when I ordered it there was a $5.00 upcharge from the online price. We had a party of 5ppl and they included the gratuity without our knowledge. I just would have rather known of these changes ahead of time."

  • "We were told we were lucky to happen upon this place, by a couple who drove about an hour to get there...and the fellow was a chef! Mussels were extra good. We will go back when we are in the area."

  • "Me and my husband like to try new places when we are alone, traveling. and he found this place online , it was perfect- we went on a Thursday night, and there was only 1 other table occupied,,, we got quick service, great drinks, and the food was amazing-- the menu changes, there was something my husband saw online menu that wasn't on the menu when we got there- but he got the lamb and it was perfect- just like my cod! "

  • "I will go back to eat over and over again. You can never go wrong with any item on the menu. Food is AMAZING. One of the best places to eat in Newport News, nothing else like it. I highly recommend it. "

  • "We were celebrating our anniversary and Circa made the evening special. The food was fantastic and the champage was a special touch."

  • "Wonderful food and wine. Is a little small and noisey but the food makes up for the lack of ambience. Best food within 40 miles hands down."
    Dined on 4/3/2014
  • "just when i thought their menu couldn't be topped - they add foie gras - delicately seared and beautifully plated foie gras. Circa never disappoints, always impressive - fresh - praiseworthy. They have an evolving wine selection, perfect pairings, unique beers, and carefully planned and executed cuisine. Even when full, its hard to pass up dessert at Circa because you know even the final course tops expectations. Come hungry - bring friends - Circa 1918 rocks!"

  • "I've eaten here about 5 times in 3 years. I noticed some little details changed. My server wasn't as attentive as they used to be. The cobb salad was no longer stacked on the plate, but piled in a heap. Lacked presentation. The short ribs were a little tough on the outside and seems to be over sauced. There was way too much sweet potato puree on the plate. Drinks were good and wine selected by the waiter was good. It just seems the quality and attention to detail of the food has slipped in 3 years. Still, in a town where the chain reigns supreme and there's little to do, this is probably the best you'll get."

  • "An excellent bistro, with an extraordinary chef and sommelier, innovative menu, a contemporary classic."

  • "The menu at Circa is edgy, fresh with local products and is accompanied by service and attention to detail from the staff which is second to none. I have dined at Circa for several years now on many occasions both for business entertainment and social outings and each time the experience is new and exciting. The staff's knowledge of the food and wine menu is apparent and they will not hesitate go out of their way to accommodate. Regular guests are always welcomed with a personal greeting and the atmosphere is equally welcoming as energetic. For the value, Circa offers the best dining experience in Hampton Roads."

  • "My husband and I came here on February 15th for a late valentines dinner. The menu was limited for the holiday, but even still our food was amazing. The waitress suggested two delicious martinis and the food was absolutely delicious."

  • "We've eaten at Circa several times and prior to this meal I would have rated it outstanding. Unfortunately they didn't live up to expectation. The oyster dish from the 1st course was the highlight of the evening. The scallop dish from the 2nd course only came with 3 scallops but in retrospect that was good since they were severely overcooked and rubbery. The cheese board from the 3rd course was very good but the chocolate cake was very dry even with ice cream. Service throughout the evening was outstanding. Unfortunately the quality of the meal was not consistent with the inflated price. The fact that neither the fixed price for the meal nor inclusion of the gratuity was advertised made the total amount of the bill an unpleasant surprise."

  • "This was our 3rd time at Circa and it continues to delight. Food was delicious and the service was fantastic. I think it's gotten better every time we've been and that's saying a lot since they set the bar high in our 1st time dining there! A true hidden gem!"

  • "We live in the neighborhood surrounding Circa 1918 and are so happy this gem of a restaurant is within walking distance from our house. The staff is amazing, the food is amazing, the drinks are amazing. This is the perfect spot if you love unique and delicious food, want a romantic night out, or need a great glass of wine after a long day at work. I can't say enough about Circa except I hope they never go away! We love it here!"

  • "Our first time dining at Circa 1918 was lovely. We took advantage of the restaurant week 3-course menu. Service was quick and polite. As a small establishment I suspected they wanted faster turnover of the tables. We were in and out in under one hour. We will be back!"

  • "A friend and I tried Circa 1918 after hearing via word-of-mouth and Open Table reviews. I loved the food options and diversity being the foodie that I am. The ahi tuna and calamari appetizer was incredible! My date had the beef tenderloin and puff potatoes for her entree and it was very good - great crust on the beef. My pork special with cornbread and brussel sprout dressing was ok. Pork flavor was bland as was the cole slaw - neither appeared to be seasoned and might have done well with a little homemade BBQ sauce. The cornbread dish was awesome! Doughuts for dessert were ok (I've made better at home) but the chocolate creme brule was very good. Server was awsesome and very personable. I would go back just to try other things!"

  • "We love Circa, the food, staff and bar are all equally amazing. We love everything on the menu, especially the meatloaf. All the staff always greet you with a smile on their face and treat you as a part of the family. The place is small but very inviting and not as small as some other viewers have made it seem. Always make a reservation though, it'll be worth all the planning and waiting! The only place in Hampton roads worth going!"

  • "We love this restaurant! Everything we have eaten has been good. The staff is friendly and attentive. On a recent visit we had the tiger prawn appetizer - loved the grits. The pork-belly appetizer was really rich and delicious also. We had the beef filet with sweet potato gratin and the salmon. They were both cooked perfectly and the gratin and sauce that came with the beef were outstanding."

  • "We don't go out to eat often, but when we do, we like to eat something we can't or won't make at home. Circa 1918 never disappoints! Fantastic food, good wine and a knowledgeable and competent wait staff. Just about my favorite in the area. Be sure to make reservations....very small dinning room and bar area."

  • "We don't get to go to Circa often, but when we do, it never disappoints! We each got different apps and entrees and they were all amazing. I think I loved my husbands seafood pasta even more than my salmon. Service was fantastic and $5 wine night made it a memorable evening!"

  • "Have been to Circa several times before and this was the least pleasant experience I've had. They were doing a special charity menu. The food was excellent but the service left something to be desired and the wine pour was weak. One of the dishes was involved a do-it-yourself aspect of rolling the components in a lettuce leaf but the menu didn't indicate that nor did the server mention it, so I ended up eating things separately. The dessert was super: a "sour cream ice cream" on a salty short bread with berries."

  • "Why would we go somewhere else when we can get the best of it all at CIRCI 1918? The staff personalizes every visit by making everyone feel so welcome. The food, from appetizer to dessert, is delicious and served just as ordered. We feel so special, but the good part is that so does everyone else who dines there."
