To be truthful, we were not familiar with the restaurant and were very pleasantly surprised with the very high quality of food and service. The property that the restaurant is on is away from the usual tourist spots which enhanced our visit....The Wentworth Mansion was exquisite, we toured it after dinner and went up to Coppola and viewed Charleston from the roof. The combination of a wonderful dinner, elegantly served and the beautiful property it is on made for a perfect 39th anniversary celebration for my husband and myself. Peter makes the menu come alive and has a mastery of every special and item served at this historical but updated gem. He knows how the dishes are prepared and where the ingredients come from.
The Chef is a master and artist. He changes the menu from time to time so the choices are always new and exciting. We ALWAYS have a great meal at this establishment. In the short time we have been in Charleston, we have brought our visitors back with us to Circa 1886 and have done so with great confidence. We are impressed all over again.
The wine list extensive and cocktails are good.

The food was excellent, from appetizers, main course to dessert. We ordered the 62.5' farm egg and broccoli pate as our appetizers and they are fantastic, especially the farm egg! The main course we had was arctic char and the dessert we had was crispy pear bread pudding and they are equally fantastic. The waiters are attentive and very knowledgable. They suggested good wine pairing and told us how each dish was made. We enjoyed every stories they told us. The outdoor dining atmosphere is beautiful. Just becareful of the mosquitoes in South Carolina. The price is very reasonable as well. As always, the service was spectacular, and we were warmly greeted as returning guests by the staff. The food was as beautiful and artfully presented as it was delicious, and our friends were delighted with everything they ordered. Having worked our way through the spring menu on a few prevoius visits, we opted for the scallops and chicken dishes, and each was as superb as the bison, artic char, and pork dishes we had gotten before. One thing I will not stray from is the roasted banana souffle. As good as the other desserts are, I would feel cheated if I got anything else! Go! As I was about to graduate from my masters program a friend offered to take me out for a nice dinner. I wanted to go somewhere I had never eaten before that had a vegetarian friendly menu. I decided on Cira 1886 in part because it was a bit removed from the husel of King or East Bay. Our waiter Christian was wonderful and answered all of our questions about the menu, everything we ordered was amazing and you could taste the love and pasion that the kitchen staff has for the food they are preparing. The food was outstanding, beautifully presented and the portions just right to end up stuffed after the lovely roasted banana souffle desert. The souffles are always a work of art and delicious.

Odd power struggle with maitress where we were kept waiting, not long, but clearly not necessary. Although the restaurant was not remotly crowded, we were seated right next to a very loud table and had to endure there inane conversations.
