A word from Cilantro

Cilantro is a seventy seat upscale casual style restaurant, with an additional fifty seat enclosed patio and veranda. Surrounded by white lights above in the trees and our luscious Virginia Creepers, Cilantro remains the casual, cozy and quaint atmosphere that we have been known for 25 years.

Chef Ken Canavan is the creator behind our menu, which has an unconventional Californian-Southwestern flare. In addition we offer daily and nightly features with our specialties being flat bread style pizzas, homemade pastas, along with many different appetizers, salads, and entrees, something to suit everyone's tastes.

Cilantro offers an ever-changing extensive wine list of 250 wines by the bottle and features up to 25 different wines by the glass. We are also proud to be a recipient of The Wine Spectators "Award of Excellence" for our wine list from 1996 through to 2010.

  • "Cilantro has been in the same location for so many years and it is still fresh and inviting. The food is very good and the service friendly and professional."

  • "Cilantro has been the restaurant where my daughters and I go to celebrate, completion of school years, the last show of a school play or a successful dance recital, graduations, special grades, special occasions. We have laughed and cried and shared stories and always, Cilantro has been the place where we know, no matter the reason for our get together, we will find great service, fabulous food and an atmosphere of comfort and ease. My step-daughter had the most amazing vegetarian/gluten free dinner simply because the chef was willing to create something special for her. We think of it as 'our place' and even though my eldest daughter has moved away, it is Cilantro we always go to when she comes home."

  • "Cilantro is a go-to restaurant for me. I have been going there for probably 15 years and it has always been good. I prefer sitting in the upstairs room, it is very cozy and warm. The patio is great in the summer. To start, I would recommend the black bean mussels. Delish!"

  • "I booked Cilantro to take some potential clients, glad I did. I had not been there for awhile. The food was great, healthy options AND desserts! The server was excellent. He had a really good sense of humour, and did a great job taking care of us! Thank you. The only issue was parking, yikes, busy, but that is to be expected on 17th Ave, so guests may need a few minutes to find parking, then the rest is easy."

  • "Very limited Menu and of questionable quality. Pastas were mediocre at best. Lasagana bottom somewhat burnt. Had to ask if there was meat in it and there was. Shrimp in Barbeque sauce starter with Lettuce was plain awkward. Wine list was very different than what was posted on line. Of the half a dozen bottles I had narrowed it down to before going they had none. Service was fine. The room is pretty but empty except for one other table. If you can get into Model Milk a couple doors down its a much better option."

  • "The plate size may not be match the price, however, the quality of the food is very good, 2 different meals were ordered, one was a pasta, nice mix of flavors, very well prepared. The service is good, excellent staff. One of those restaurants you will keep going back to, knowing you will not be disappointed."

  • "My boyfriend and I stopped in here for a date night where we enjoyed the feature pizza and a salad with beef tenderloin. Both were delicious. The peanut butter pie was also very good!"

  • "Such a great place for special occasions or a romantic dinner. Our table all ordered something different and our party of 6 were so impressed by the quality of the food. The service was very attentive and caring. We already made arrangements to return again as it's food and service left us all wanting to go back! I would highly recommend Cilantro's to my friends and will do so. Looking forward to sitting in the outdoor patio next time. Cilantro's made our family reunion much more fun and enjoyable. The menu provided everyone with many choices and we all loved the large wine list. We are excited about our next visit! We all were impressed with our evening there!!"

  • "We were seated behind a screen near the front door. Next time I would prefer seating upstairs or towards the rear, but the screen was effective. As the place filled up, it became quite noisy so if you are looking for quiet, not ideal on a Friday night. The food was incredibly tasty. Beef tenderloin entree and rabbit special feature were outstanding. Wine selection is excellent and complimented the meal perfectly. Portions were also excellent, giving room to enjoy soup to start and the delicious desserts. We don't get out much, but we Iove to cook and enjoy fresh, well prepared food so Cilantro did not disappoint. Lovely presentation, nothing over the top. Excellent dinner and I am looking forward to eating there again."

  • "Its a nice restaraunt, my only issue was the noise level. I shared the pizza as we were in a rush. I would go back and try a different item next time. The pizza was delicious though."

  • "I have been going to Cilantro as a favourite for years. The food is consistently excellent . as us the service. I would always recommend Cilantro fir lunch and dinner year round. Best little courtyard in this ."

  • "Had a great meal at Cilantro. Could be our new favourite restaurant! All staff are knowledgeable about the menu and drinks. The beef tenderloin was probably one of the best entree's I have ever eaten. After eating in restaurants all over the world I would rate this one in my top ten! Will certainly be returning. Hope we get the same server next time as he was great, can't recall his name though!"

  • "I visited this restaurant recently because my girlfriend heard many good things about the place, and always wanted to try it. We were instantly greeted when walking in, and brought to a cozy table for two next to a window. The atmosphere was pleasant, but due to the lack of business, the staff were very chatty with each other in a high school hallway kind of way. It made for the date for two to be quite awkward when we would hear them chatting and gossiping about things. The food was good, but I found it a bit pricey for what we received, but the service was excellent. I would give this restaurant a 3 1/2 out of 5. It was not outstanding, but it was not close to bad. The menu was limiting, kind of boring, and the pricing was a bit high."

  • "A friend and I had a great night at Cilantro. I had the black bean mussels to start and they were delish. We both had the ribs. They were good but I wasn't a huge fan of the slaw. The jalapeño cornbread with the ribs was excellent. We sat upstairs near the pizza oven and it was really warm and cozy, perfect on a cold Calgary night. Our server was wonderful, friendly and very helpful. All in all a great evening."

  • "We have been going to Cilantro for 6 years and have never been disappointed with the food. New servers need to learn their wine selection."

  • "Had a lovely meal, friendly & prompt service. Menu is diverse enough that it would appeal to most. Food was very good, presentation was nice. Space is tight but atmosphere is generally relaxing. And if you're into wine (I'm not) the list is extensive and gets rather pricey - for whatever that's worth:) Will definitely go back!"

  • "Loved it! The 4 of us had a great dinner. The food was great. The service and wine recommendations were perfect. Thanks for a great night out! I highly recommend this restaurant."
    Dined on 1/31/2014
  • "Great atmosphere and location. The menu is odd. There are a lot of items that are bigger than an appetizer, but not enough for a meal, and usually really rich. Do you share it? do you get it and then a $35 entree? although they do not say so on the menu, they will make smaller versions of a lot of things. Really, this place is great for an afternoon snack, especially on the patio in the summer. Share the pear pizza and have a beer or wine, fantastic. our food the other night was not good. Over cooked dried cold scallops on a salad, ginger pasta that was too much on its own, and a VERY salty meatloaf. Reminded me of the first time i was there and had a lasagna i could not eat as it was too salty."

  • "Everything was very nicely presented and fabulously put together, and our server was perfectly timed in all interaction. Only complaint: $9 for a nice Dieu Du Ciel beer should get me at least a regular sized glass of beer, if not a pint... Keep the wine glasses for wine."

  • "Restaurant was way too cool on a very cold night- we had too sit with our coats on."
    Dined on 1/30/2014
  • "Our appetizers and entrees were pretty good for the most part. But the dessert we had was the upside cheesecake and it was amazing... I coulda had three of them if my waist line would allow it. Service was good. We were sitting my the stairs area which wasn't the best area but otherwise it was a nice date night dinner. Priced pretty reasonable too."

  • "The food here is absolutely delicious. All ingredients were fresh and dishes were well constructed. The wine list was great & the sommelier was wonderful. We really enjoyed discussing the different wines available with the super friendly guy. The atmosphere was lively and cozy with a view of the forno oven from our table."

  • "For a long time, Cilantro was my favorite restaurant in Calgary. The food was always consistently good. I especially liked going there in the summer because of their great patio. However the last 2 times I have been to Cilantro's, the food has not been good. I am not sure what has happened but it is very disappointing. I won't go there again."

  • "Date night with my girl. Excellent prawns with a Thai sauce and we shared a saggy beef - both super tasty. The service was excellent with no pressure. The highlight was the sommalier (sp?) who was able to reccomend two excellent half bottles of wine and provide a lessn in decoding Italian wines to boot."

  • "Atmosphere in the back room was nice and cozy on a cold winter night. Menu was varied with different foods like the pulled elk pizza. The entrees were very different . Prices were reasonable and portion sizes were just right. Definitely recommend this restaurant for ambiance, good food and good wine."

  • "We've been going to Cilantro to celebrate our wedding anniversary for years. Their BLT has been a long-time favorite because they make it with smoked bacon. Of course, we expect a BLT (which also includes gouda) to be on the salty side, but this year it seems that the chef up-ended the salt shaker in the vinaigrette. Our BLTs were so salty that it destroyed the other flavors. Luckily the desserts are still good and the wine list is still impressive. We won't write off Cilantro just yet, but hope for considerably less salt next time."
