A word from Cilantro

Cilantro is a seventy seat upscale casual style restaurant, with an additional fifty seat enclosed patio and veranda. Surrounded by white lights above in the trees and our luscious Virginia Creepers, Cilantro remains the casual, cozy and quaint atmosphere that we have been known for 26 years.<br />

Chef Ken Canavan is the creator behind our menu, which has an unconventional Californian-Southwestern flare. In addition we offer daily and nightly features with our specialties being flat bread style pizzas, homemade pastas, along with many different appetizers, salads, and entrees, something to suit everyone's tastes.

Cilantro offers an ever-changing extensive wine list of 250 wines by the bottle and features up to 25 different wines by the glass. We are also proud to be a recipient of The Wine Spectators "Award of Excellence" for our wine list from 1996 through to 2010.

  • "A wonderful place to eat. The food was outstanding. Try the Beef Tenderloin, and if you are a beef lover, you will not regret it. For a real treat, be a little bold and go for the Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie. Cilantro has a relaxed, casual atmosphere with an warm elegant touch. The hint of smoke from the wood burning oven added a rustic element to the already inviting ambiance. The polite staff accommodates your every need. There is both an indoor and an outdoor eating area with heaters in the outside patio if needed, and free parking around back. Over all, a perfect place for, not just a meal, but an enjoyable experience."

  • "Love the patio at Cilantro, lots of room and the walls make it private with no street traffic. I love the Sea Bass which is (IMHO) the best in the city. The food and the service are consistently excellent. Love the restaurant scene in Calgary and Cilantro is in our top three. Bottom line is when you pay good money you expect nothing less and Cilantro does it again and again. Well done Cilantro."

  • "This was my first time at Cilantro and I will definitely be back!!! The food was absolutely fantastic!! The service was excellent and the ambiance on the patio was awesome. I went with two of my girlfriends and it was such a great time. I recommend going her if you have never been because I was blown away :) I would love to take my hubby because its a truly romantic setting when it starts to get a bit dark. The full patio is lit with candlelight. 10/10 for me!"

  • "The food at Cilantro was good, but definitely not what you would expect for the price point. Dishes are typically 35-40 for mains, 15-20 for apps. The gorgonzola pear pizza is exactly as described- mostly pear. My guest who is a vegetarian, had very little to pick from on the menu, and the waitress didn't offer any suggestion that the kitchen might accommodate because of that. We were informed that the staff felt one of the specials needed to to be kicked up a notch, so they added bacon. Never seen bacon treated as a spice before. No chance of leaving off the bacon as specials were not modifiable. Seafood was reasonably cooked. Risotto was a bit dry, possibly from being plated a while before the seafood was added."

  • "The Restaurant is in a very nice location ; the ongoing fire is really special. Converting a 3 story house into a Restaurant with interesting options for table location is enticing .We have dined there at least a dozen times and look forward to an annual revisit. I doubt that we have sat in one table location more than once over the years. Several good friends are equally as fond of tho restaurant."

  • "Our food was totally mediocre at best. The ribs were cold and not flavourful. The chicken was very average. The smoked salmon appy was decent. The food has gone really downhill in our last two visits within the past two months. New chef, perhaps? It used to be better. Portion size was small for the price. We left somewhat hungry. We won't be back for a long time until the kitchen improves the taste and quality of food being served. It was not worth the amount that we paid the last two visits."

  • "We went for a work group lunch and were able to sit out on the gorgeous patio. Trees are filled with lights, which would make dining out there in the evening really romantic. The patio is enclosed so you don't even rememer you are sitting along 17th avenue. Perfect for a date night. Food and service was great. Would definitely go back again!"

  • "As always, the food and wine were wonderful, but on Thursday evening there were a couple of very loud tables. Nonetheless, we will continue to go to Cilantro at lunch and dinner time. Like all the CRMR restaurants, the selection and quality of the food and wines are reliably excellent. We were disappointed not to be able to eat at Cilantro at Buffalo Mtn Lodge on the weekend."

  • "Cilantro has consistently good food, with imaginative dishes that often change. I usually order from their daily sheet which provides additional items than the regular menu. The pastas are particularly good, and so are the entrée salads. Wine selections are diverse, and well matched with the food courses. The patio on a warm & windless night is a special experience."

  • "As i looked at the menu, i was reminded of why i do not go to this restaurant more than once or twice a year. The appetizer and salad selection is poor. Then there are the $16 pizzas, $20 pasta or the $40 main- such a remarkable pricing spread! We opted to share a pizza, salad, and pasta. All were alright. I do remember the pear and Gorgonzola pizza having less pears and more cheese previously. I guess i will wait another year and give it another chance."

  • "4 of us Started wt the muscles, CHORIZO CLAM BROTH & BLACK BEAN CREAM SAUCE. Both were VG but like the 1st 1 best & I'm not a fan of Chorizo. Then 3 of us had the CHILEAN SEA BASS cornmeal tamale, grilled peppers, citrus ancho chili sauc. I have to say it's been the best meal I've had in a long time. At $40 it's a bit pricey but VG period. Sea Bass was thick & super moist. Told them not to over cook it & it came out perfect. The citrus ancho Chilli sauc was just the right flavor. Very unique dish. Can't say how good it was. I've been plenty of times to Cilantro but this was by far the best & only time I've raved about it."

  • "My husband and I went for his birthday. I had specifically mentioned in the reservation that it was his birthday, however there was no acknowledgement at all from the waiter. I had smoked salmon as a starter and my husband had buffalo moza salad. Neither were know outs, my salmon was relatively tasteless and the salad was ok. My husband ordered beef tenderloin med rare - it came over cooked. The waiter acknowledged this and took the salad (the cheapest thing we ordered) off the bill at the end - why not the beef I would wonder? The gorgonzola pizza I had was undercooked and really only the edges of the pizza were crisp - all in all not a great dinner. Others I know have said the restaurant is over rated and living on past glory."

  • "Every time I visit, I'm always amazed. Cilantro made my anniversary very special with great food and awesome service. Our server was very knowledgeable and is very good at her job. I watched her circle the room very gracefully, not only tending on us but many others without a person even emptying a glass of water. I do feel like the front rooms needs a facelift, the atmosphere isn't the best but the food makes up for that. My favorite spot is in the back or when the weather permits, the patio! Much more romantic and cozy."

  • "My pepper linguini overall was tasty, but I felt the food for hours after and I had heartburn. Was it the heavy cream? Also the pieces of chicken in the pasta were very bland. It was disappointing. We did not have dessert or an appetizer and I am glad since the food was like a stone in the stomach for hours. I was also surprised to see a seabass on the lunch menu for $40.-! This seems pretty steep for a lunch menu, chicken $36. "

The candied ginger offered at the welcome desk on the way out was an interesting alternative to packaged mints recognizing the significance of plants and sustainable fare for the dining experience."

  • "Service was excellent, and the wine list is extensive. The server was very knowledgeable about the wine list, too. However, the food was very disappointing. Our party ordered soups for appetizers, and everyone thought theirs had too much salt. The mains were also overly seasoned, including a pasta that was so heavily peppered that it was all you could taste and was inedible. We sent it back, and the re-made version still had too much pepper (the pepper was in the pasta). I was very disappointed in our visit there, as I've been to this restaurant before and had a great experience. However, I don't think I'll be headed back again anytime soon."

  • "Had a lovely evening with friends our server was very knowledgable about the wines and menu and attentive to our needs. The menu is not large but they do have a daily extras as well. Although we enjoyed our starters both the special and the mushroom soup had a kick of spice but acceptable. However our main courses were hot spicy and my husband could not finish his linguine with meatballs and I left some of my pasta with mussels. The portions were large and it was shame about the spice as otherwise tasty."
