Diner Reviews
  • "Cicada needs to get waiters that know their drinks, know what the bar is capable of serving, and most importantly, not forget a diner's order. It was missed entirely and our food got cold waiting for our friend's order. To add insult to injury, they "comped" our coffee. BFD! I complained and they comped the late dinner. Never going back there again!"

  • "My wife and I were in Los Angeles on vacation from Philadelphia. Her favorite movie is "Pretty Woman", so I investigated where the movie dinner scene was shot. Turns out it was at Cicada, and the restaurant looks even better in person than it did in the movie! Service was very attentitive, steak was outstanding. They even put us at the same (approximate) location as the table from the movie!!! They were having a "Cicada Club" night with a swing band, which we didnt stay for (back to our kids) but the night was awesome!"

  • "We came to cicada for my girlfriends birthday. She loved this place. The customer service was outstanding, from the initial greeting by the hostess, to the waiter delivering the check. Every employee we encountered was pleasant and attentive. We will definitely be back. Thanks for a great experience."

  • "This is our first time coming to Cicada and we thoroughly enjoyed it. It has a fantastic interior and ambience. The wait staff was extremely professional and friendly, and we liked our food a lot. Definitely recommend coming back again!"

  • "The ambiance here is outstanding. Truly exceptional. If it feels familiar it's because you've seen this restaurant in many, many movies and TV shows over the past few decades. The service? Exceptional. Absolutely phenomenal. They seemed to know what I wanted before I did. The timing of the dishes was outstanding. I have food allergies and the waiter didn't make me feel like I was being a chore when I asked specifics about the dishes. (You'd be surprised at how many waiters make you feel like a lower form of life for having allergies.) The food? It was all good, but none of it popped and made me say "OH WOW!" It was solid, but for the price I was hoping for a little more "wow." I hear the red meat IS a wow, however."

  • "The place is outstanding for its historic value of a former haberdashery from the 1920s, where a prominent chandelier hangs from the center of a vast room and dim, golden and purple lights maintain a relaxed ambiance. The food is good, but certainly does not match the uniqueness of the place. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience in occasion of my friend's birthday. Thanks."

  • "As soon as we sat down I said "this is the type of place where you get engaged and then come back to having your wedding reception here". The dining room has a beautiful historical feel with dark wood and a pretty chandelier as the room's focal point. You get a very traditional, throwback vibe between the decor, architecture and white jacketed service. The portobello mushroom appetizer was good, the short rib was very tender and the chocolate molten cake was perfection! Delicious, perfect size and pretty presentation! If you're looking for a "grown-up" place to have a nice dinner, you can't go wrong with this place."

  • "It was the strangest atmosphere. A big open room that felt like it should have been redecorated 10 years ago. No energy. Service was great, food was decent, but the atmosphere killed it."
    Dined on 7/15/2014
  • "The room is really a nice space with many preserved original art deco decorations. But this has not undergone a first rate restoration and it looks shabby around the edges. The chairs do not match and they creak. The food is average, not bad, but it is nothing special. Food is also overpriced for what you get."

  • "Go on a Friday night when band is playing and everything is lively. It's more of dinner and a show from the 1930's."
    Dined on 6/20/2014
  • "I never knew this restaurant existed until last Friday. I took my girlfriend out to "Cicada" for a romantic dinner. The restaurant is located inside the Opiatt Building and there are no visible signs outside the restaurant, only a valet sign and the building number lets you know. We were greeted with smiles and were seated right away. The art deco inside was amazing since it has been intact and pretty much preserved since the 1920's. Food was okay at best and was not worth the price we were charged for it. I had the new york steak and my girlfriend had the mushroom risotto (best risotto I've had by far) and the appetizers were decent. Our waiter gave us a history lesson of the restaurant and some amazing facts as well."

  • "This gorgeous art-deco former men's haberdashery is a wonderful environment for a special occasion. The food was excellent--especially the squid-ink pasta and the wild bass--and the service unobtrusive but consistently friendly and helpful. Better if you have a large group, as the restaurant is very large and spacious, with high ceilings, so if only a few parties are there it could be a bit overwhelming."

  • "This restaurant is arguably in the most beautiful historic rooms in LA. A historic imposing space provides a beautiful restaurant scene and is the backdrop for excellent food served by waiters who really know how to serve. The home made squid ink pasta with crabmeat was on a par with the best pasta served in town. The veal chop and black cod mains were excellent and came with well conceived sides. This has to be one of the very best downtown restaurants."

  • "It was a wonderful place to go for a special occasion. We did the tasting menu and did not regret it at all! It is beautiful there, and I would love to go again when there is music on a Friday or Sunday night."

  • "Good food, great service, they have live music and dancing on certain nights. Probably not the best place for your little ones, unless they're well behaved of course.."
    Dined on 5/16/2014
  • "The place was beautiful, the 1928 building and themes just great. I swing band "Phat Cat Swingers", HOT and the place was jumping. The price was high but I can't wait to return. "

  • "Cicada is a step back in time to Hollywood's by-gone era. It is elegant and stylish. The food is delicious and the service is impeccable! "

  • "We happened to book a table for four on a Friday night which happened to be the night the Cicada Club was meeting. We decided to join the festivities and what a great time we had. Those people dress up to look good and, oh boy, can they dance. We enjoyed the food and the atmosphere very much. The wait staff also were excellent. Thanks for a fun evening."

  • "Visiting the restaurant after a 20 year absence (back then it was Rex Il Ristorante), we were quite happy to find the location to be at least as gorgeous as we remembered. Arriving early for dinner before a show at the Orpheum, we were quite literally the first diners in the place. Warmly welcomed, we were comfortable immediately. After delicious drinks and salads we moved to the entrees. The Lobster Linguini was frankly jaw-dropping delicious! My wife felt similarly about her homemade gnocchi dish. Service was wonderful throughout and we vowed to return again in much sooner than 20 years!"

  • "There aren't enough downtown restaurants open post-Sunday theater matinee dinner. The prix fixe Sunday here is pretty good. There was entertainment later on the evening we dined. The beautiful room in the 1928 Oviatt Building is is in need of TLC."

  • "The dinner was great, the service was great . . . but their salads were lacking."

  • "The food is excellent and so is the service. If you like a very big restaurant where you converse easily and have your order taken quickly enabling you to make the 'curtain'...this is the place for you."

  • "It was a great night. Wow, I want to return. I even danced and I felt very comfortable"

  • "I chose Cicada on Open Table based on their menu, table availability (for 5), write up on Open Table and proximity to my work location in downtown in LA. When we arrived we discovered they were serving only a prix fixe Valentine's menu. We had limited time and after surveying other options we decided to stay put and order from the abbreviated menu. The food was decent, the service decent, but nothing resembling the pricepoint or the write up on Open Table. It seemed like a private club from another dimension. It was a bizarre experience overall."

  • "This little place was the perfect spot to celebrate Valentine's Day. The service was excellent and the food was great. Although it was a little pricey, it was worth every penny."
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "Recently was here for a Valentine's dinner with the lady. Very romantic. Its kind of like a Great Gatsby theme. I would've been great if they could have had live music for that weekend. It would've been an even better experience for a Valentines day weekend. Overall, it was great and would definitely come back."

  • "Ok so I took my wife for Valentines and although it is great location it is crazy expensive for the kind of food and service you get"
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "The interior was beautiful. The band played great music. I had the chance to eat delicious food and listen to live music with the person I love on Valentines day. I wouldn't have it any other way. The night was perfect. I had a great experience."

  • "Came in on a Monday night during Restaurant Week, and I appreciate the fact that Cicada isn't traditionally open on Mondays, but the food was terrible...and it was off their traditional menu, not the Restaurant Week menu. I ordered the fish grill and all three pices of fish were dry and tasteless; the menu was not professional looking, and the food was not consistent with the recent yelp ratings. The inside of Cicada was run-down, and not the classic old L.A. interior that I was expecting. Everything about the place was dingy. They were out of the first wine we ordered and out of the dover sole. Bottom line: the place had the feel of financial duress and seemed about ready to go out of business."

  • "I've always wanted to see the inside of this restaurant and DineLA afforded us the opportunity. The food was good -- not cutting edge, hot-spot choices, but it was fine. I enjoyed the experience very much. Thank you."

  • "Love the art deco decor.... Gatsby eat your heart out! This was my second time here, the food has better then before. The only issue I have is the seating. I would have liked to of stayed longer but seating was very uncomfortable for everyone at the table."
    Dined on 11/24/2013
  • "The Cicada is one of those great old LA clubs from the Golden Age of Hollywood, still proudly running, serving really good food and showcasing 30s and 40s music acts...this is a real hot spot for the crowd that loves to jitterbug. It's LOUD but a lot of fun...surprisingly good food for the kind of venue ...love the idea of a dress code..takes us back to a more gentile age when life was all about having fun."

  • "Excellent service and staff. Food was excellent and had a romantic night with my partner"

  • "While the food was great the service was terrible. We had a group of eight and the restaurant was not busy at all. We were looking at the restaurant for a buyout but after our experience we will not be doing that. It is too bad because the food was so good. Very disappointing evening."
    Dined on 11/13/2013
  • "Live music, dancing and good food. A great night in this partial theme park restuarant. We'll dress up next time....really enjoyed watching Mr and Mrs Smith (the film) the next day and reliving the restaurant backdrop. Marvellous."

  • "We were pleasantly surprised with the live 30's and 40's music, the interaction of the crowd, and the overall experience for my wife's birthday. We are never disappointed with this venue. Food was excellent, service was excellent, and the night was very enjoyable."

  • "Came to Cicada for my wife's birthday based on the very positive Zagat review. First bad sign was that the place was nearly deserted. The chairs were uncomfortable. The food was fine, but not great, and certainly not worth the price. A definite birthday bust. I'm puzzled by the Zagat rating."
