A word from Ciao Wine Bar
Ciao Wine Bar offers a truly authentic Italian experience in a contemporary yet soulful environment in the heart of Toronto’s Yorkville District. This new Italian eatery and wine bar, created by the Liberty Entertainment Group, offers traditional Italian fare in a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. />
While Ciao encompasses over 8,000 sq. ft. over three different levels and seats 250, the space remains warm and inviting. The lower level has been transformed into an underground “rustic cellar” with arched brick walls, vaulted ceilings and vintage viewing wine racks. The focal point of the lower level is the alabaster pizza bar. The mezzanine level, with stone + glass walls, rustic wood finishes and butcher block table tops make Ciao ideal for a casual relaxed meal yet elegant enough for a special night out. Street level seating opens onto Yorkville Avenue where diners can linger over a glass of wine late into the evening.

Diner Reviews
  • "We were in and out within 45 minutes and the menu was huge yet nicely laid out. The polenta fries and braised short ribs were stellar. Wouldnt do the carbonara pasta again but it wasnt horrible either, just OK. Friendly service and nice ambience. "

  • "It was booked as a special occasion night. No mention was made. Our server was nice and efficient. Lasagne was good but the chicle.parmigiana was barely edible. Dry and tasteless."

  • "The evening started off well enough. We arrived a little earlier than our 8pm reservation but were seated right away. 4 of us were there celebrating a very good friend's birthday; this was my gift to her. Wine and appetizers took a while to come but they were tasty; especially the bread. We ordered mains at the same time as apps but didn't get mains until 10:15pm after several inquiries! We were told that the kitchen was very backed up with a party of 60 in the basement. Why they didn't better plan for this is hard to understand. Wait staff did their best. We asked for manager, she did comp our apps and give us desert and champagne on the house. But given this was a celebration and a gift, it didn't make up for it unfortunately."

  • "This is our second time coming to this restaurant in just over a year, We loved the food and decided to come back. Menu seemed to be exactly the same, we sat in the booth next to where we sat the first time. It's as if time was frozen and nothing changed - which is usually a good thing except for the fact that the service was still VERY slow. You order a drink, it comes 15 minutes later. Our waitress even made a joke that "Hey at least they came out before your meal!"....not a good sign. Maybe they need to hire an additional bartender for the weekends. It shouldn't take 15 - 20 for a glass of wine and a drink on the rocks."

  • "Great overall experience. We came here for my fiance's birthday as she had frequented a sister restaurant on King street.. We are both vegetarians and were delighted to have a number of options for appetizers and entrees. After each having a cocktail, splitting polenta fries and a spinach salad and a cheese plate along with fresh baked bread with a bottle of wine we ordered our entrees, but both of us struggled to finish our pasta as we were so full. The entrees were great, the portions were decent sized and the food was reasonably priced for the neighborhood. Neither of us are wine connoisseurs, but if that's what you are into they had a large wine list. Pretty casual environment."

  • "Ciao is quickly becoming our late night spot when we haven't had time to plan dinner and just want something casual and comforting. The wine is great and the food is too (although I'm not sure the desserts are the best). The last time we went we just got four appetizers and a bottle of wine which was really nice. This time we got a cheese board to share and pasta mains which was also a great option. It was nice to take our time, however, our server seemed to disappear later in the evening and we had trouble catching her. We weren't in a rush at all but it seemed to be an unreasonable time between getting dessert and finishing without her coming to our table to check on us. Despite this, it was still a really enjoyable evening."

  • "The restaurant is very nice and the food is great. However a few small things about it I didn't like. We went as a group of 10 and they claimed they couldn't split the bill. We ended up paying the bill on 10 different debit/credit cards and it most likely took the waiter 5 times as much effort to do this as it would have to split the bill. Also, it is very loud in there and it is hard to have a conversation over dinner, not the best place to go on a first date."

  • "This was our first dining experience at Ciao and we are definitely coming back soon. We were seated promptly to a lovely table upstairs and were offered drinks not long after. We started with Caesar salad and bruschetta and then a pesto linguine, penne vodka and a pappardelle lamb Ragu. Everything was prepared perfectly and tasted delicious. Portions were plentiful so there was no room for dessert unfortunately as it looked fantastic too."

  • "We were a party of 10 on a Saturday night. We had reservations. We were seated quickly, even though our entire party wasn't there, which was nice. The server was pleasant but service was slow: placing our orders took time, getting the cheque took time (one cheque btw, we weren't asked if we wanted separate bills). In fact, we had to ask to place our orders for both mains and dessert as well as for the cheque. Given the cost of the food, we expected it to be better than it was-- a $20 lasagne should taste better than a $7 one. It was a fun evening but I won't be going there again. A lot of hype, not a lot of substance."

  • "Although the server was pleasant - I wish he was a little more attentive. The restaruant was not busy and so I was surprised that he did not check in on us more. When an error was made with a friend's pop order - the manager was quick to rectify it personally - so I appreciate that. Given the location of the restaraunt (Yorkville) - I would have just thought the server might be more attentive."

  • "I had a great time at Ciao. The food and ambiance were good. My only issue is that when I arrived the restaurant wasn't full but the hostess kept placing customers directly next to us when there were so many options. A few times customers had to say "Can't we sit over there?". It did packed later but at the time there was no need to place people so close. You felt you were right in your neighbours space."

  • "I went for my birthday and we were a group of 7. The food was excellent, but the service was not great. We had to flag down our server on multiple occasions to place drink and food orders. It took almost 15 minutes for someone to take our drink order and another 10 minutes to get our drinks. One of my guests had to get up and find a server to place our appetizer and entree orders, and by this point we had been at the restaurant for over an hour. We later wanted more drinks and again, we had to flag someone down. No one checked on us after our entrees were dropped. Lastly, when we asked for separate checks, the server said it was not possible to do that. Great food, but the service needs major improvement."

  • "Although on the pricier side, the food is always worth it. We ordered the carbonara, veal chop, and the steak that was on special. Everything tasted very good and so were the portions. Their started bread was amazing, as always, and they even offer more if you haven't had enough!"

  • "Friend ordered a pasta carbonara dish and was dissatisfied. The carbonara was weak. Someone cut back on ingredients and saved a nickel. They eventually took the item off the bill. I ordered a Beef Tenderloin which was one of the specials. I requested medium rare and received a medium. I was told I received the last one available which at 7:30 pm seems a little early to be running out of specials. The kitchen was not up to par. Wine selection was great. Service was very good. Bar Scene was great."

  • "Don't sit near the kitchen as there is too much commotion and it is very loud and distracting."

  • "Great arugula salad. The vongole pasta was marred by somewhat sandy clams. But just perfect el dente and nice white wine sauce. Pizza was a bit burnt and not enough mushrooms. Overall, I usually like the food more than this. Our server was a very nice man."

  • "Ciao was one of our favorite restaurants. Last two times, the service was very slow. We had to wait long for the meals and the restaurant wasn't full. The last time we went there,we were 5 people and 3 of us didn't like the meal they ate but desserts were perfect. I am not sure about recommending Ciao to my friends. Best regards"

  • "My friend had recommended this restaurant to me so I was very disappointed. The evening started fine with a lovely wine choice and delicious appetizers. We had ordered our main and our appetizers together. Our main courses didn't come. We waited over and hour and half. The server just keep saying we were next, etc. I have a feeling she had forgotten to put in our order. When our food arrived, after eating a piece of my chicken I realized it was raw. Once I sent it back the manager came over and apologized profusely. In the end we were given our food for free and a complimentary glass of wine. We only had to pay for our bottle of wine. Although they were deeply apologetic, I will be very hesitant to return to Ciao."

  • "Group of us (10 peeps) were seated promptly.... Waiter was kind and informative.... Pizzas the apps and deserts were the best.... Not to familiar with their dinner selection... Tried it once before, nothing to brag about.... They have a white sangarias in a jug... Worth the order.... Closed early (midnight) not to many people (it is winter season) summer time generally packed.... I would recommend trying it once... Nice ambiance as well..."

  • "$25 for a 3 course meal! Between 5 and 7 on Thursdays they have half price wine. So I bought a bottle of Argentian wine. The best $75 for a dinner for 2 with a bottle of wine. Ive dropped triple that and wasnt worth it."

  • "Ciao is an amazing gem in Yorkville. Not crazy expensive but definitely good value for the money. The bread and olives are mouthwatering. The gnocchi is pillowy and delicious. Salmon cooked beautifully and grilled calamari is a huge portion of succulent yumminess!!!!"

  • "We started with a drink upstairs and found the server indifferent and slow. When we moved to our table downstairs, the server we had was EXCELLENT-she was charming and knowledgeable. Our bottles of wine and cocktails came out in a really timely manner. The food on the other hand was pretty bad-the appetizers and the mains took a really long time to come out, and when it did, the food was stone cold (all 8 mains for our party were cold). There was no one around to tell, and we were starving so we had to keep eating. My carbonara was like dried glue and the bacon was hard and dry. I have eaten here many times and I have seen a serious decline in the past two years. I think this was the last visit for us."

  • "I took my mother to Ciao Wine Bar for the Winterlicious Prix Fixe for her birthday. Winterlicious can of course be hit-or-miss in terms of the quality of food or service; my experience here was one of the best Winterlicious meals I've had. The food was really delicious and very flavourful. In terms of service, we felt a bit rushed at the beginning (they didn't give us much time to decide if we wanted to order drinks; appetizers arrived right after the bread, so we felt like we had to rush so they wouldn't get cold), but after that the service was great, and they did not rush us to leave. The space was warm and inviting while also contemporary, and I appreciated that the tables were spaced enough that we had privacy and it wasn't too noisy."

  • "The food was mediocre. My guest and I found that we were extremely thirsty after the fact of dinning at Ciao Wine Bar and found at times of our dinning we had to yell to hear one another. It was great for a one time dinning experience but we won't be returning."

  • "The service was surprisingly slow. At the host stand we waited 5 minutes before someone came to seat is, although they did seat us early as we came in before our reservation time. The servers seemed very busy, and possibly over-seated. Our impression overall was positive, and the food was delicious."

  • "While this is not the first time I've visited Ciao however, my latest visit with my fiancee was great. He's quite the picky eater and he enjoyed everything (**cue happy dance). The service and the food was amazing. I'll ....correction...we'll be coming back again!"

  • "My roommate and I came here for a nice date night with wine featuring the Winterlicious menu. The ambiance was perfect and the food was so flavourful and elegant. This is a great location for a date; such a romantic atmosphere. The bread they served at the beginning was addictive and the wine was so smooth. However, if we had taken the regular menus instead of the WInterlicious ones, we probably would not have been able to afford dinner. Pricey but worth it!"

  • "Went during Winterlicious, the food was nothing special. But the bread are great, seems freshly made. The ambience was not what most pictures show, only the basement level certain seats look like the photos."

  • "My boyfriend and I went to Ciao for lunch and from start to finish we had a great time. Our server was very friendly and the food came quickly and was extremely tasty. There was a host of beverages to choose from but the prices were affordable compared to other restaurants in the area. In terms of the ambience it was very relaxed and not too crowded which gave the feeling of privacy while having your meal. I loved it, we will definitely be coming back soon."

  • "Had a winterlicious date with my girlfriend at Ciao, Everything was very good, from the wine to the 3 course meal. Service was a bit slow, but it was a busy friday night. food was excellent, and I could see how someone could become a 'foodie' frequenting a place like this. Would recommend / go again! Thank you"
