Wonderful little bistro in the Arts District. Food was good but the real draw is the overall ambiance and feel of the place. Head over to Pour House before dinner and enjoy a glass of wine before dinner.

Lunch was delicious but server was erratic at best. Bartender was much better. He stopped by to take our order & check on us. Resturant was fairly empty yet our server disappeared and asked to our dessert order when we hadn't even gotten our entrees. She had NO idea what was going on.

I was really disappointed in Church & State this time. I went on November 1, the day after Halloween, expecting to find a cute date night spot for me and my wife. Instead, I found Halloween decorations and food that tasted like it had been warmed up a la McDonalds, not cooked a la a french bistro. We ordered the French Onion soup, the escargots, and the Coq au Vin--typical french dishes that this restaurant should have hit out of the park. The escargots was the only thing that tasted good. The onion soup was definitely reheated, as was the cog au vin. All that said, the service was fantastic, even in costume. Our server was very attentive and accommodating. I just wish the food lived up to it.

Went to Church and State (my choice) with five ladies for a girlfriends birthday (no one else had ever been) and EVERYONE loved the place. Service was great from the hostess greeting at the door all through cocktails and meal service. The sommelier was particularity helpful..... Can't wait to go back again. Thanks so much for making the birthday girls evening a very special one.

It was last minute decision. We were doing some business on the east side of downtown and it became lunch time. Church and State was just opening. I loved that there was a parking lot across the street. We were greeted by friendly staff. We had the pick of the restaurant since it just opened. We had the lunch special. It was chicken. My boyfriend never eats chicken especially out at a restaurant. He loved it. That says a lot. The soup was a ginger carrot it was airy, light, no cream and not spicy. Delish. The entree was great, but the dessert was mouth watering. It was a big lunch. Price was only $21.00 for 3 courses. I would go back in a minute if it wasn't so far from home. Yummy.

I decided to try something a little different for a friend's birthday lunch in downtown. The restaurant is a littkeo cc the beaten path but I'm a big fan of the nyc feel in the arts district so decided to go. We grabbed a seat on the patio. Service was great! Our server made some fantastic recommendations and they were attentive. The seasonally inspired menu was very flavorful and we enjoyed all we ordered including the charcuterie, chicken entree, and beet salad.

We go into the city every few months to try a new restaurant and thought that the food was good, not great. We are from Chicago, so we may have higher expectations. The oysters seemed very small, which may not be their fault and the steak tartare seemed bland. The rest of the meal was ok.

We expected a nice anniversary dinner on Friday night. Everything was ok, until my appetizer arrived in two parts, 4 escargot ramekins, and about 10 minutes later, another 2. SOMETHING WRONG IN THE KITCHEN? We had just finished our entrée, when a gentleman told us that there was a table for 4 that had been waiting for over 15 minutes, so he asked us if we would mind moving over to the next table. SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE RESERVATIONS?? Needless to say, we finished out entrée and asked for the bill. Didn't bother to stay for dessert. Won't be back. GOOD THING - The parking attendant was very nice..........gave him a nice tip.

This was the second time we have dined at C&S, and overall it was a good experience, however, I won't be ordering the steak again - it was tasty but the chewiest meat I have ever attempted to eat. At this price-point, I expect better quality. In retrospect, I probably should have rejected it after tasting the first bite, but I didn't want to spoil the evening with my date. My date had the duck and it was delicious.

Started the evening with signature cocktails and an assortment of appetizers: pomme frites, charcuterie plate, olives, bread, tarte de l'oignon, and macaroni and cheese. The tarte was heavenly. We brought our own wine, Robert Sinskey Pinot Noir and paid the corkage fee ($30, ridiculous to pay twice minimum hourly wage to uncork a bottle of wine), and then moved on the prix fixe menu. Started with a delicious beet deviled egg, always good! They were out of octopus, but substituted a bite of grilled black cod with harissa sauce, very nice. The fish bite was followed by a greens/fennel salad, very refreshing. I had the pork belly which was cooked perfectly and very flavorful. The poached pear dessert was a bit of a let-down. Amazing evening.

The neighborhood is industrial and a bit sketchy but the food more than makes up for it. The atmosphere is dim, very French with bistro chairs that are slightly uncomfortable but it's part if the charm. I highly recommend their handcrafted cocktails. They are fresh, perfectly balanced, and delicious! We had the teachers pet and pear one. The former was my fave. For food, the escargot was fantastic... How can you go wrong with garlic butter pesto soaked escargot topped with a flakey buttery puff pastry?! Order mussels w frittes as either an app to share or as an entree. The portion size is generous and the fries are addicting and the sauce divine! Creamy but not heavy. The charcuterie platter was good but I've has better.

What a tremendous disappointment. The food was mediocre. The "signature dish"was not even average. The salmon dinner was overcooked. Two at our table ordered the lamb which they rated as slightly above average. The salads were quite good, in contrast to the entrees which were not . The wine? We brought two bottles of really excellent wine for a tabel of six. Pre arrival we confirmed a corkage fee of $25.00 per bottle with a maximum of two bottles. We corked two bottles. What a surprise, then, to see a bill reflecting 4 corkages and a charge of $120.00!

Church & State offers consistently delicious French bistro fare. Their charcuterie platter has components rarely found, like duck prosciutto, with a chicken liver mouse that is to die for. Their flatbreads, especially the onion and bacon one, are mouthwateringly good. Entrees show the chef's command of everything from steak frites (you might think you were in Paris) to fish, which they are particularly adept at preparing. And, their new pastry chef, Marco, does wonders with deserts. The pear tart and chocolate pot du creme surpassed all expectations.

Great food & awesome service. The lavender goat cheese thing YUM. Mac and Cheese had a funny taste though, didn't get into that. French Onion soup = amazing. Chocolate caramel tart thing...SO GOOD. Great IPA and some cool cocktails. The place was too loud for us.. it was date night and we wanted something quieter. Bar scene was hoppin' on a Friday night with loud drunk people. Lighting is pretty bright. Tables are suuuper close together so you hear all of it, very NY feel. My arm was brushed by waitstaff's bum a hundred times as they tried walking through the very narrow opening between tables. The decor and ambiance, mind you, is very nice. It's just a bunch of stuff crammed into a small space and not romantic.

Peach tarte (flatbread pizza) was yummy. Oysters were super fresh and delicious. Waitress talked me out of Flat Iron Steak claiming it was very gamey. I got the Pork Belly instead. It was a tad fatty but delicious. I thought the bite of duck I had was mediocre, but my guest liked it. French fries were great, despite having been frozen according to my guest who saw them come out of the bag. Sparkling rose was very good, but pricey at $14 per glass. I do not like the cancellation policy--credit card upfront to charge $25 per person if don't show or cancel the reservation less than 24 hours before.
