Diner Reviews
  • "I live pin dtla but had never visited church and state. Great interior design and ambience, felt very NYC to my boyfriend and myself. The table for two we were led to was next to the kitchen and waiter's station so we opted out for dinner at the bar. The bartender was very helpful and attentive, boy did he move fast for the entire evening. I chose the tomato salad, flavorful, and the loop de mer, subtly prepared and presented. Fantastic drinks."

  • "Delicious food - come hungry. Tarte with peaches was fantastic, and duck superb. I'd come back another time for just a snack and glass of wine too."

  • "Food was decent; flat iron cut for the steak frites was terrible; stick to hangar steak. At least, the Fries and Bearnaise sauce were very good. Pork Belly made up for the steak. Salted caramel chocolate dessert was excellent! Nothing you can do about it, but way too loud!"

  • "My friend and I were so looking forward to eating here - but I have to say that I was a bit disappointed. The prices are high (which I knew going into it) - but the food was just okay. Actually, the steak frites was pretty terrible. Fries were good, meat had a weird flavor to it. Not good. The amuse bouche was eh. The goat cheese with lavender honey was just okay. We liked the endive salad and my friend loved her fish. Initially they tried to seat us right by the side stand - and then moved us outside. It was windy and a bit chilly...not comfortable...There are so many excellent restaurants downtown, I think that we will skip this one next time."

  • "Edwin our waiter attentive and made some wonderful recommendations. Two started with goat cheese w/ honey & thyme that was delicious. My other guest the endive salad with a lemon vinaigrette dressing that was delicious. The bouillabaisse comfortably French. Steak Frites authentic and flavorful. The salmon with white tomatoes while good, lacked seasoning. My guest had the Pot de Creme for dessert and raved about how delicious it was compared to others."

  • "Havent eaten here in a while. Food, ambiance, service all great. Highly recommended."

  • "Open and airy, relaxed and friendly, we loved the vibe. Whole olives, crusty bread placed on the table before the menus arrived. Experienced servers who seemed to know how to move things along without making us feel rushed. A solid selection of wines. The only place I've seen half a glass offered for designated drivers... the perfect amount to enjoy with your meal. The Puff Pastry Escargot came smothered with garlic and butter. Yum! The Flat Steak with Frites... cooked to perfection. My Roasted Pork with Polenta was delicious. So tender I just pulled it a part instead of cutting it. Topped off our dinner with Cherry Melba... a rich fruit sauce poured over homemade vanilla ice cream. To.Die.For! Needless to say, we will be back."

  • "We enjoyed our meal and the ambiance. It is like finding an oasis in the middle of the desert. When you turn down Industrial Street it is a great sight. We came right at opening time for dinner so it wasn't crowded at all and the noise level was low. By the time we left at 7:25 pm it was quite energetic. I had the muscle appetizer with a salad. Lots of muscles and delicious french fries! My friend had the bouillabaisse and said the sauce was very tasty but it lacked fish. It had several muscles and clams, but no scallops (which I believe it said it would) and maybe one small piece of fish. Our wines were excellent! Service was excellent and they got us out on time for our theater engagement!"

  • "My girlfriend and I had dinner at Church and State and while I was trying to locate the restaurant I had my reservations because it is another gem which is in an area which is changing in downtown L.A. Industrial neighborhood was my feeling. When I turned onto Industrial and saw the crowd at 6:30 p.m. on a Tuesday I revised my thinking. From the moment I entered the restaurant which was lively, ate my wonderful dinner, had super service and left my feelings were this place is wonderful. I would recommend this location to anyone who likes to venture and loves good food."

  • "When selecting wine by the glass, the waiter offered a couple of sample tasting which is rarely offered by any other restaurants that I know of. I suggest caramerized onion flatbread and bouillabaisse. I want to go back there soon."

  • "Went here for dinner and left satisfied but in no way wowed truthfully. The place was very accommodating and let us move the reservationhalf hour later but the place is very noisy but the open air feel makes it not so noticeable. The chicken liver mousse was OUTSTANDING but the rest fell somewhat short. If you know classic and quality French cuisine (where Im from) this place is a very watered down version. The duck dish was nice with unique flavors but mild and underwhelming. I had the pork belly for a change and it was very low flavor. The wine list leaves little if you don't want to spend over $90 for a bottle and the specialty cocktails were few and far between (not that that's a bad thing depending) still good experience not worth $200"

  • "We enjoyed eating there. It's an interesting place. The problem for us was we each ordered an entree, (a large plate), rather than small plates. We had tickets to a show and didn't have a long time The entrees came, but were rather small. We should have ordered appetizers first. We didn't have time for dessert. We did consume quite a bit of bread after we saw the size of the entrees. We are willing to give it a second chance when we have more time. We did find their bar choices limited in the brands they offer."

  • "I like the ambience and feel of the restaurant but the food was really disappointing. I could nitpick at this or that with service etc but it really came down to the food. I'm willing to give it one more try for dinner but with so many exceptional restaurants in LA, based on my lunch experience I will probably not go back for food."

  • "There were three of us for dinner. We ordered a delicious entree to share as an appetizer, the shallot pancakes with fresh vegetables (including some wild mushrooms) and a delectable sauce. It was the highlight of the meal for me. The two men ordered the club steak for two ($48 a person), a huge slab of meat that was delicious, served with just mashed potatoes and a bit of watercress. We took the bone with some meat on home and my husband enjoyed a great sandwich for lunch. The sauce was wonderful! I ordered the roast suckling pig. It was very tasty, but I should have ordered something lighter. The dessert was the only disappointment. Too sweet. It was the layered cake with hazelnut ice cream. Ice cream great, cake no."

  • "I've never not had an excellent time at Church and State -- the food and cocktails are always great! They do an excellent job on their meat dishes, and the mussels and bone marrow appetizers are particularly noteworthy."

  • "Church & State is in a neighborhood that is two blocks long. The surrounding area is a bit threatening for those who don't know it already. But go anyway. I found the menu to have many interesting, yet authentic offerings. I took Steak Tartare and had the duck as a main. The Steak Tartare was thankfully not overloaded with raw onions that detract from the flavor of the beef and was not too rich like so many other restaurants' tartare can be. The duck was a duo that included some confit for the leg and rare meat for the breast with a light sauce. For dessert, we had a crème brulée, which was made with real vanilla (you could see the seeds in it) and perfectly torched on top. Wine also was good. And prices better. Bon Appétit!"

  • "Food and ambience was very good, my only negative comment was our service was a bit slow. We were a party of 5 arrived at noon (with reservations), we ordered drinks which took a little longer than expected. When the drinks arrived we order appetizer which took longer than expected. Food was delicious. We ordered desert, two people ordered coffee which came quickly however I ordered a cup of tea which never arrived. Would I try Church and State again absolutely."

  • "Our second time in four months and it was as great as the first we ate here. We had their price fixe menu for Sunday. Absolutely fabulous had the BEST trout ever! Really!!"

  • "The spot is beautiful, reminiscent of Balthazar in NY. My last visit to the spot a couple of years ago was absolutely stellar. This time, it felt obvious that ownership/management had changed. The menu is smaller and less interesting – traditional bistro fare now. Service was glaringly poor: dirty dishes in a busboy's hand in front of my face over my table, server taking orders from men first, no offer to switch food out when allergens not on the menu appeared on the dish. But most significantly, the food is not great anymore. Sauce on the trout was delicious but all other dishes were on the bland side."

  • "We'd been planning on visiting for years and finally got around to it. First time I've left a 10% tip in years: took awhile to order/receive cocktails; plates and drinks came out a different times; a side dish and a dessert were never delivered. Not what's to be expected in this price range. Food was pretty good, though overpriced and overrated. Caveat: neither of us eat red meat (1 had fish, the other's a vegetarian)"

  • "This was our 3rd time at C&S. First two were outstanding. This time around the food for whatever reason just wasn't as good. Wife's steak wasn't season and was really bland. My seafood cioppino was pretty good but overall the food just didn't seem to have the same flavor that we've now come to expect. The cocktails were awesome and service is very solid. We'll go back but probably not for a while."

  • "Love, love, love the Onion Tarte! We had a fairly large group and absolutely everyone raved about their meal. From Steak Frites to the Trout Muniere, we were all happy. The Endive Salad was especially nice also. Service was very friendly and attentive. We also appreciated the wine list which is different than all the standard California wines we usually see. Loved our French Sauvignon Blanc!!"

  • "Really enjoyed our dinner at Church & State. Setting, food and service combined to create a great evening. We started with the peach and brie tart and watermelon salad. Mains included steak frites, boullabaisse, lamb and duck. Everyone was happy. And even though we had no room had dessert. Profiteroles. Delicious."

  • "My wife and I discovered Church and State, thanks to Open Table, and enjoyed an early evening meal. The restaurant resides in the old Nabisco building in industrial LA, and would be hard to find if one didn't know about it. The food was definitively French, with interesting and tasty choices including a rabbit hors d'oeuvre and French onion soup. We had bouillabaisse, pork bellies and cerises melba. For us this was a fine discovery and we would recommend it highly to others."

  • "The menu has something for everyone and all of the food was excellent. Indoors seating is very tight and noise level very loud when filled with diners which it is most of the time. Staff is very attentive and hospitable. Recommend for a good, well prepared meal."

  • "I have been to Church & State for lunch and loved it! This most recent time was for dinner with friends. The food was amazing! I LOVED everything I had. The onion tart was delicious, the hanger steak was so tender and the fries were amazing! My friend and I shared the chocolate and caramel tart, best chocolate tart on the face of the earth! You HAVE to try this restaurant, it is outstanding! Oh, and I forgot to mention the bread is amazing as well!"

  • "Never been but had wanted to try and was not disappointed. Birthday dinner was exceptional in every way from front of house to food and service, particular shout-out to Steva (sp?) He was charming, understated and filled with good humor. Our first time was for a special occasion and it was indeed special. Will undoubtedly return and recommend others to do the same."

  • "It took an hour and a half to get our main dish ...it was nice that they brought us the goat cheese appetizer complimentary because the kitchen was so slow but the food was not great ... It was cold .. Not worth the price at all .. Sorry we will not go back ."

  • "Met some friends on a Thursday night. WOW! What a treat! Restaurant vibe and appearance was wonderful. Service was superb, not rushed and very sympatico. We spoke with our table neighbors about their food, we loved ours and theirs! heirloom tomato salad, onion tart, mussels, caviar, trout - I don't think you could miss with any of the menu. Wine list was exceptional. We vowed to go back - soon.. loved, loved, loved."

  • "A 10plus dinner...trout was cooked and seasoned to perfection...BUT the chicken was elevated to gourmet!!!! Do not even attempt to make your wine selection...leave it to the sommelier and you will not be disappointed...Not our first experience and will not be missed as a dining destination on every trip to LA... Do not order the tarte with peaches first unless you are starving-its decadent and filling!"

  • "We felt good as soon as we walked into the restaurant and had a glass of the house Bordeaux. Our table of four thoroughly enjoyed the charcuterie, but found the escargot oddly presented. The main courses of duck, steak frite and bouillabaisse were very much enjoyed with the trout rather tasteless. The peach tart desert was excellent, but would not order the chocolate tart again. I don't care what you call the coffee, but $4.00 for a refill is ridiculous. The service was professional and competent as one would expect."
