Diner Reviews
  • "Our second time in four months and it was as great as the first we ate here. We had their price fixe menu for Sunday. Absolutely fabulous had the BEST trout ever! Really!!"

  • "The spot is beautiful, reminiscent of Balthazar in NY. My last visit to the spot a couple of years ago was absolutely stellar. This time, it felt obvious that ownership/management had changed. The menu is smaller and less interesting – traditional bistro fare now. Service was glaringly poor: dirty dishes in a busboy's hand in front of my face over my table, server taking orders from men first, no offer to switch food out when allergens not on the menu appeared on the dish. But most significantly, the food is not great anymore. Sauce on the trout was delicious but all other dishes were on the bland side."

  • "We'd been planning on visiting for years and finally got around to it. First time I've left a 10% tip in years: took awhile to order/receive cocktails; plates and drinks came out a different times; a side dish and a dessert were never delivered. Not what's to be expected in this price range. Food was pretty good, though overpriced and overrated. Caveat: neither of us eat red meat (1 had fish, the other's a vegetarian)"

  • "This was our 3rd time at C&S. First two were outstanding. This time around the food for whatever reason just wasn't as good. Wife's steak wasn't season and was really bland. My seafood cioppino was pretty good but overall the food just didn't seem to have the same flavor that we've now come to expect. The cocktails were awesome and service is very solid. We'll go back but probably not for a while."

  • "Love, love, love the Onion Tarte! We had a fairly large group and absolutely everyone raved about their meal. From Steak Frites to the Trout Muniere, we were all happy. The Endive Salad was especially nice also. Service was very friendly and attentive. We also appreciated the wine list which is different than all the standard California wines we usually see. Loved our French Sauvignon Blanc!!"

  • "Really enjoyed our dinner at Church & State. Setting, food and service combined to create a great evening. We started with the peach and brie tart and watermelon salad. Mains included steak frites, boullabaisse, lamb and duck. Everyone was happy. And even though we had no room had dessert. Profiteroles. Delicious."

  • "My wife and I discovered Church and State, thanks to Open Table, and enjoyed an early evening meal. The restaurant resides in the old Nabisco building in industrial LA, and would be hard to find if one didn't know about it. The food was definitively French, with interesting and tasty choices including a rabbit hors d'oeuvre and French onion soup. We had bouillabaisse, pork bellies and cerises melba. For us this was a fine discovery and we would recommend it highly to others."

  • "The menu has something for everyone and all of the food was excellent. Indoors seating is very tight and noise level very loud when filled with diners which it is most of the time. Staff is very attentive and hospitable. Recommend for a good, well prepared meal."

  • "This was our second time here. This time we brought friends. Will definitely come back."

  • "I have been to Church & State for lunch and loved it! This most recent time was for dinner with friends. The food was amazing! I LOVED everything I had. The onion tart was delicious, the hanger steak was so tender and the fries were amazing! My friend and I shared the chocolate and caramel tart, best chocolate tart on the face of the earth! You HAVE to try this restaurant, it is outstanding! Oh, and I forgot to mention the bread is amazing as well!"

  • "Never been but had wanted to try and was not disappointed. Birthday dinner was exceptional in every way from front of house to food and service, particular shout-out to Steva (sp?) He was charming, understated and filled with good humor. Our first time was for a special occasion and it was indeed special. Will undoubtedly return and recommend others to do the same."

  • "It took an hour and a half to get our main dish ...it was nice that they brought us the goat cheese appetizer complimentary because the kitchen was so slow but the food was not great ... It was cold .. Not worth the price at all .. Sorry we will not go back ."

  • "Met some friends on a Thursday night. WOW! What a treat! Restaurant vibe and appearance was wonderful. Service was superb, not rushed and very sympatico. We spoke with our table neighbors about their food, we loved ours and theirs! heirloom tomato salad, onion tart, mussels, caviar, trout - I don't think you could miss with any of the menu. Wine list was exceptional. We vowed to go back - soon.. loved, loved, loved."

  • "This was my first visit. In our group of six, three were first timers. All of us ordered a different meal and all were well pleased. Service was slow, but worth the wait. Staff was attentive and friendly. Definitely would go again."

  • "A 10plus dinner...trout was cooked and seasoned to perfection...BUT the chicken was elevated to gourmet!!!! Do not even attempt to make your wine selection...leave it to the sommelier and you will not be disappointed...Not our first experience and will not be missed as a dining destination on every trip to LA... Do not order the tarte with peaches first unless you are starving-its decadent and filling!"

  • "Excellent food but very noisy. We we 6 and it was hard to hear everyone. Most important food was delicious."

  • "Delicious food in an unsuspecting part of DTLA. Quarters are a little tight, but the staff is very friendly and the food is great!"

  • "We felt good as soon as we walked into the restaurant and had a glass of the house Bordeaux. Our table of four thoroughly enjoyed the charcuterie, but found the escargot oddly presented. The main courses of duck, steak frite and bouillabaisse were very much enjoyed with the trout rather tasteless. The peach tart desert was excellent, but would not order the chocolate tart again. I don't care what you call the coffee, but $4.00 for a refill is ridiculous. The service was professional and competent as one would expect."

  • "The food was excellent and we received excellent recommendations from the sommelier. The restaurant has an authentic ambience. Overall an excellent dining experience."

  • "I met a friend for a quick lunch meeting Wednesday and what a great time. The service was unrushed and very respectful and the food was terrific. C&S is a great place for an outdoor meal with a fun menu."

  • "I've been several times and will gladly return. It's a bit pricey could get out of hand. Excellent wine service with knowledgable staff. Interesting French wine list and wines by the glass. The food is not super adventurous, but not boringly safe either. Escargot come in individual porcelain cups topped with puff pastry. Tartes are delicious and large - either a main course or shared among several for an app. Meats perfectly cooked. Small, but excellent cheese course. Haven't been able to bring myself to order anything but the salted caramel chocolate tart for dessert. Paper-thin crust and the densest of chocolate with an amazing texture and a bit of caramel and crunchy salt on top. Lively, yet pleasant atmosphere."

  • "As the title suggests, this is a truly out of the way place. However, now that we have found it, well... The food is the star in this amazing renovated factory setting. The food is not only beautifully and artfully presented, it is layered with flavor. The peach "tart", more of an elevated flatbread with fresh peaches and cheeses was a standout, and could be a meal in itself. The boulliabase lived up to the waiter's recommendation with a heavenly stock and fresh seafood, accompanied by a baguette with a mostartda that was rich and delicious. The trout was prepared perfectly..a whole butterflied fish, with a drizzle of sauce that did not overpower the freshness of the catch. We will have to go back when we are not rushed for theater."

  • "We went to Church & State and were treated with such kindness and expertise of service. The food was incredible starting with the perfectly toasted warm bread, the incredibly marinated olives and goat cheese in lavender honey. The ambiance is wonderful with a small but well-stocked bar perfect for a drink or meal and an open room with wonderful lighting and extremely attentive staff. The chicken was perfectly cooked and the trout light and beautifully seasoned. We would recommend this as a must-visit for anyone looking for a special treat in downtown Los Angeles."

  • "The fish stew is absolutely Devine. They have one of the best wines available; and they know their wine."

  • "Dined here last Saturday night and completely enjoyed the experience. Not a restaurant for a romantic date as the noise level is very high, but the food and service was excellent. Had a table right by the kitchen and watching the chef in full action was great fun. Try the cheese course and must have the pomme frites. The duck was cooked perfectly. I will return."

  • "This was a special occasion dinner for my daughter's 43rd birthday. It was a great choice! The food and service were excellent."
    Dined on 6/28/2014
  • "This place is OK...not too bad, not too good, just Fair as I've marked. It's got a cool location in the middle of nowhere. It's a nice physical place. Yes, there are some good food items. The French Onion Soup is nice...but for the price, like many places in Los Angeles, you just need to ask yourself if it's worth it. For two of us, we paid $150 for dinner..1 drink each, and app and two mains.. It seems like in other towns, in other parts of the world, you're getting better quality for a better price."
    Dined on 6/27/2014
  • "Nice space....really, that's the only positive. Escargot encroute looks awesome but was boring and difficult to eat. Steak was overdone and cool (perhaps slightly warmish). Very disappointing for high prices. Won't be back."
    Dined on 6/27/2014
  • "C & S is a very nice place for dinner although I was disappointed that coq au vin was not on the menu the night we went and I've heard it is their best dish. Otherwise the food was good but slightly over priced. cocktails were excellent and service was good but not exceptional."
    Dined on 6/24/2014
  • "What a surprise. This place is awesome. My wife and I had our best french meal away from France. We tried many, even more expensive and higher reviewed, french restaurant. And so far Church & State is the best we had. It's a bit more expensive, but if you want a very nice French dinner, this is a nice local place to go."

  • "Price Fix Sunday dinner with wine pairing was fantastic."
    Dined on 6/22/2014
  • "The crowded dining area lends a feel of being at the center of a special spot in say, London or Paris or New York. Food was excellent, but the wine list could offer some American wines which in many areas (Rhones from Paso Robles, Pinots from northern Ca) would go well with the menu. However, part of having a dinner experience with friends has to do with conversation as well as food and wine. This is greatly reduced by the terrible level of noise. Obviously, it has not stopped people from coming. Next time I will sit outside."

  • "Restaurant was crowded and noisy. However food was outstanding. Great favors in all the dishes we had on the table. Service was very good and they stayed on top of tables even with the amount of people at the restaurant. Food was promptly delivered and well presented. Probably the best meal we had in LA during our stay. Definitely would recommend this restaurant and definitely will come back on my next visit. Location was a bit strange for this quality of restaurant."

  • "Lovely dinner here with my wife. First visit. The room is fun, loud and very bistro. Staff is friendly and present. Wife had a fantastic tarte with peaches and brie - like a pizza, but on flatbread - absolutely delicious. I had the steak frites. Frites were great, steak was flavorless. I would visit again but order differently."

  • "Having eaten here before we had expectations that the service would be better...$80 bottle of wine should have been poured by waitress/sommelier...and it was not...died at the end for coffee...food would make us return but PLEASE step up the attention to detail in the service division!"
