Diner Reviews
  • "Incredible food, service, and ambiance. Been to C&S twice now and the food is SO good, Gina (the hostess) is fantastic and the whole meal is simpky perfect. GO!"

  • "I had not been to Church & State in a few years, and I enjoyed returning to Church & State. The dining was very pleasant and enjoyable, with friendly and happy staff all around from the time I arrived until the time I left the restaurant. I would definitely like to return to Church & State."

  • "I love this place and have been here many times. Our waiter left in the middle of the meal and we got no attention until we flagged down another server. I imagine it was an emergency but we should have been told that someone else was taking her place. It was a busy Sat. night so we forgive them this time. Otherwise everything was great, the food that is and that's why we go there. It's a bit over crowded."

  • "I rarely ever review a restaurant, even if the experience was poor. (I am just not one to grieve or rave my dinner experiences to type on a website). But, in this situation, I feel a must to Times New Roman. We truly loved Church & State. The scene is great, the vibe fun, food was very good, our server was on it! I am rarely impressed by restaurants in LA (usually find the best food and service in neighborhood cafes or food trucks) , but I was very impressed by Church & State."

  • "This place is almost obscenely hip in terms of clientele and location, but the incredible food keeps it real. I would return JUST for the bread."

  • "I was very excited after hearing of the arrival of Tony Esnault on Good Food with Johnathan Gold. I was equally as disappointed after trying an extremely bland Cassoulet and Bouillabaisse. They lacked depth, richness, or flavor, and the broths were very watery. However, the Gratin de Macaronis et fromage was superb, with a Gruerye so complex and wonderful, that at least it saved the evening. Coupled with the extremely tight tables and lackluster service, we will probably not return --maybe only for happy hour, as the cocktails and bar are excellent!"

  • "This is the perfect Parisian bistro you'd be hard pressed to find in the city of light. Classic fare, Steak Frite, Cassoulet and even Canard L'Orange. A great twist on escargot, served in little cups covered with puff pastry All done with the utmost care. A well curated wine list in a wide range of price points. And the desserts are amazing! Get there quick before the word gets out!"

  • "I just loved this place! So warm and inviting and the food and service was excellent!"

  • "The menu was great and certainly dialed up the french influence. Everything we had was amazing, though by the end the response of all 4 in our group was "heavy". Lots of great dishes, a fun atmosphere. Tables are very close together but overall it was a great dining experience."

  • "I went for the coq-au-vin, which I had read about in reviews, so I knew going in that would be my order. I was not disappointed. I've traveled often to France and this was the real deal, with the most amazing wine reduction sauce. My friend and I shared moules-frites for our appetizer and were shocked at the portion. It could easily have been an entree, and we both thought it and the wonderful aioli served with it to be delicious. We found ourselves yelling to be heard by each other, which is the only reason I downgraded the "ambience" somewhat -- but the environment is otherwise very inviting. It looks more like an outdoor patio, with strings of lights hanging as you would outdoors, and an exposed brick floor add to that look."

  • "Everything about Church and State is laudable. The food is so refined and robust, a great achievement. There is discipline and love in the kitchen, from the celery tart, cassoulet, coq au vin to the rhubarb tart, we ate very very well. Special thanks to Church and State for the absence of music - the sound level was loud but it was happy diners not the latest trendoid band."

  • "Wonderful food, attentive service. A little noisier than I would like but the food was so good I would go back in a minute!"

  • "Waitstaff was impressive...both in skill level, attitude, and looks. Food was crazy good. No where in town like it."

  • "I had the cassoulet, which was good but I wouldn't rave about it. She had the duck, and raved about it. The service was great; the sommelier poured 3 different wines before she decided the waiter's first suggestion was the best. We were on a tight schedule, and they kept things moving along and got us out on time. Would definitely come back when we can spend more time."

  • "The food was under-seasoned and none were provided on the table. I have no intention of going back."

  • "My friend and I went for lunch, hoping for a French experience, given the new French chef. We were very disappointed. My friend's omelet was as hard and as ordinary as a Denny's omelet, not al all the fluffy French omelet we had expected. My Croque Madame was curiously flavorless. When the waiter asked why the omelet was left uneaten and my friend explained, he was offended and curt. We will not be back."

  • "Food/drinks, service, ambiance-- all wonderful (the service especially). The noise level is a bit too high inside and the table spacing can make things a little too cramped. Not so much about elbow room as it is intimacy. You're having a conversation with your friend...and the two strangers sitting next to you."

  • "Went with my spouse for a weeknight dinner. This restaurant felt very much like a Parisian bistro. From the decor to the dessert served on a wooden plank. All the waiter recommendations were delicious, although the savory tarts are quite rich. We had the mushroom tart, which we only ate half, and still by the time we shared a salad were almost too full for our entrees. The coq au vin was very flavorful with the chicken crisp skinned yet so tender it fell off the bone. The steak frites was also very good. Too bad we could not eat it all. We finished with a lemon tart that was wonderfully tart and sweet. Will return for another dinner here soon."

  • "Its a bit pompous of them to think they are that hot that they require a credit card for reservations over 4 people and will charge you $25 per person if the exact reserved amount does not show up. Other than that, food was good. I like how fresh and light their side salad tasted. The mushroom tarte was more filling than I thought it would be and I recommend the escargot, both were delicious."

  • "Too noisy. Tables crammed too close together. Uncomfortable chairs. Food was hit and miss--very very good to not so much. Our service was very good."

  • "It was good but not outstanding. I expected a little more for the - must eat - hot spot in LA. Drinks: cocktails were delicious! 10/10 for cocktails! Escargots de Bourgogne en Croûte it was delicious! - the best dishes that I have had in this restaurant! I definitely recommend it to everyone! Saint Jacques et Choux Fleurs - unfortunately had a lot of sand in it… :( i couldn't enjoy the smooth texture a quality scallop. Had a lot of small grits of sands… The famous French Fries - very good but I wasn't amazed… nothing really special about the french fries… very similar to the father1s office french fries. Again… maybe I was expecting too much? Staff - Very friendly and knowledgeable! Overall it was a nice experience!"

  • "Aside from the butter being not quite yellow enough, this place is Paris in Los Angeles. Save yourself the airfare and treat yourself to a true French experience. The tartar, soup de l'onion, coq au vin and wine list was absolute perfection. Service was beyond attentive without being overbearing. This place is what a bistro is supposed to be. I can't wait to come back and try everything else on the menu."

  • "There are not many good French food restaurants in LA or Vegas for that matter so finding this one was a wonderful surprise. My wife got the Coq au Vin and I got the Saddle of Venision. She enjoyed hers quite a bit and I found mine to be absolutely delicious. The sauce made it, as it should in French cooking. It made the venison absolutely delicious. I also had the bone marrow appetizer which was something completely different from anything I had ever had and was a completely new delicious taste to me. I hope to go back to try the cassoulet, one of my favorite French foods, and some of the other dishes. This chef is the real thing. I think anyone would find this restaurant excellent and very delicious."

  • "I looked forward to eating at Church & State, but I guess the wait came with great expectations, which in my opinion where not met. The service was the best II have to say, but the food was just good. I ordered the Salade de Frisée & Steak Frites."

  • "We picked the wrong time to go to this restaurant, as it was overbooked. As it was an open kitchen layout, we could see 6 to 8 waiters in line waiting for their orders. I know meals in France are leisurely, but our wait was ridiculous. As far as the food, some of the dishes were exquisite, and some were very so so. The steak tartar was a mediocre looking patty, and it looked like it had not been freshly made. My husband's steak (with the steak frites) was very undercooked (probably because the kitchen was pushed), and was somewhat gristly. The vichyssoise and the simple green salad were exquisite, as was the trout (all part of the Sunday prix fixe). The tangerine custard was just plain weird. We might return."

  • "We had the sunday 3 course meal...service was friendly but slow and the food wasnt so great. I had the veggie plate w quinoa which was sort of watery and veggies unevenly cooked, my wife had the trout which was bland and sort of heavy in flavor - I was disappointed..."

  • "After J. Gold's last review, we were hoping to find a newly inspired menu and food experience. While everything was perfectly good, it was a far cry from the exciting early days of Church & State. So, while the food is fine, the atmosphere great... it's just a great space. The wine guy was great... knowledgeable and conversant. Sadly, our waiter (whom we've had a couple of times before) was so lethargic and slow, it was painful. I am sure that changed the experience for us."

  • "Ambience triple layered. Trendy with a whiff of elegance usually lacking from trenders. Exceptional service with a friendly and knowledgeable weight staff. A huge thank-you to the manager for holding our reservation on a crowded night. Ordered four dishes. Two were wonderful - huge hits. The other two were total misses and dreadful. I don't send food back unless it's something I did not order or there is something foreign on my plate. The steak tartar and the duck - I really wanted to send back. Streak was tasteless and very dry. The duck was too undercooked, so the fat was almost ice cold. The huge hits were the cocktails and wine and the fried pigs ear. I would go back for these choices only."

  • "One of the best food and wine experiences that I've had in recent memory. Excellent steak frites (the "best fries in LA" rumors are true), and a coq au vin that I'll never forget. Sommelier recommended a terrific bottle of red...all in all, a perfect experience."

  • "We went for a birthday celebration dinner with friends and it was perfect. The food was great, the wine wonderful, and the setting was busy but still felt intimate. It was a very fun night. It was a busy night but we were still seated within minutes of our reservation time, and uncommon occurance in LA."

  • "Good food but the service was distracted. We did not get bread (which was excellent, by the way) until we asked for it after our main courses had arrived. We had made a reservation but still had to wait about 25 minutes for a table. The restaurant was extremely loud. We had to shout to be heard. This killed the dining conversation for us. The bone marrow appetizer was disappointing. It was an unsubstantial portion. The coq au vin was authentic and good. I appreciate that the restaurant has petit portions on the menu - I got the petit bouillabaisse. The rhubarb pie dessert was disappointing. It was bland and a touch heavy."

  • "I've been to Church and State a few times before however, this was my first time going with a large party. The food was absolutely amazing! Our group literally ordered every single item from the menu this time around however, amidst all the meat, poultry and seafood, my favorite dish still is the Macaroni and Cheese. It's by far the best Mac and Cheese that I've had! My second favorite and still favorite is their creme brûlée. This is the best creme brûlée I have ever had in my life and if anyone reading this can recommend an LA eatery that serves better creme brûlée, I will have to compare it to that of Church and State."

We ordered and ate and ate and ate. The memories of our great visit will be flavored by the delicious food and great Wait Staff. Thanks very much."
