Diner Reviews
  • "We chose to sit outside which is the reason for the lower ambiance score and higher noise score. There were a few things going on that were out of the restaurant's control but made our dining experience less than ideal. The pros and con of being on Church Street. The food and service were both excellent."

  • "We met friends for dinner and were thrilled to be able to sit outside on Church Street. People watching in Burlington is big fun. We enjoyed three fine appetizers and the entrees were outstanding. My son's dessert was just amazing! We will definitely return here."

  • "Had salmon with lentils and it was marvelous! Atmosphere was really nice for our group of 5. Cocktail list was fantastic. Will totally go back and I don't repeat often."

  • "great server, attentive. interesting menu. the weak spot is the food itself. burger was very good but not the thing I'd like to be saying was good. the cioppino was a mess -- overcooked seafood and broth was way too salty. the salad with prosciutto was likewise way too salty."

  • "We were looking to go out to dinner after a 12 hour day at work (finish at 8pm) and the pickings are slim in our area. We had a gift certificate to Church and Main and they are open late, so we went! Once again, delicious!"

  • "Great location with fantastic gnocchi and Portsmouth scallops as our main dishes - quite phenomenal and a huge shock given our preview of the main dishes. This is because sadly the appetizers were exceedingly poor. The broccoli soup offered as the soup of the day was salty and tasted like roadside diner soup. It was uninspired. the goat cheese appetizer, polenta and goat cheese Timballo was dry. The polenta that enveloped the cheese was tasteless and dry and one would hope that the goat cheese at the center would do something to elevate the dry and tasteless polenta. Sadly it was the opposite because the cheese was also dry. The mains were excellent - tasty sauce for the gnocchi and a perfect cook on the scallops. Great service by Maci."

  • "Pros: Nice spot on Church street; nice people and decor; nice place for a drink or cocktails with friends. Cons: Service was too slow, it took one hour hour to receive our appetizers. Our bottle of wine was not served cold. We were told it was a very popular wine! We were not able to start to enjoy it before our main course! The food was ordinary and even bad. Somes plates were too salty. My main course was gnoccis; it was a huge plate, the pasta itself was too big in size (a big chunk of 2 inches) and a with a greasy after taste; not polished at all. We were extremely dissapointed with this meal. This place used to be really good and fun 2 or 3 years ago, but not anymore. For sure it was our last visit. A bad experience with a $200 bill."

  • "We've been to Church & Main a number of times but not sure we'll be back. The food is great but definitely overpriced...which we remembered thinking the last time after we got last night's bill. Not only is it overpriced in general, but when you ask for ketchup and they charge you $2? That just leaves a bad taste in your mouth no matter how good the food is. If you're looking for good food and want to sit outside and watch all the Church Street activity I would definitely recommend...just be sure your wallet is full before you go."

  • "The site of this restaurant is excellent - outside - on the corner - lots going on. Service was very good. Unfortunately our food was expensive and mediocre for the most part. Calamari was good. Seafood small plate was very salty. Gnocchi was not seasoned well - it had some nice vegetables in it though. The pasta special was very good. We tried two desserts: the tart was unremarkable, and the ice cream sandwich got mixed reviews. The ice cream was very tasty; the peanut brittle was nice; the cake part of the sandwich was tough and tasted stale. No one was totally happy with the food. "

  • "This was a fantastic find. From finding the menu online to making a reservation, it was an enjoyably simple and easy experience. The food was great, so much so that I no longer dare to cook scallops or pork tenderloin, knowing I'll never be able to attain the perfect taste and texture that they had. Being able to sit outside, and enjoy the beautiful weather and the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival made the experience that much more exceptional."

  • "3 times to get their specialty app dish edible was not ok. The waitress tried but the kitchen did not. No wondering why its empty anymore."

  • "Our visit to Church & Main was one of the nicest dining experience we've had in a long time. The food was imaginative and tasty; the service was friendly and efficient. The wine list was nicely curated, with many offered by-the-glass. Oddly (for Burlington, that is), there were only three beers offered on tap, but they were good ones."

  • "Overcooked meat...even after sending it back. Oysters were overpriced and were the smallest oysters I have ever seen. They should let them grow up a little. Nothing that I ate there was worth mentioning."

  • "Great menu and service. Only my second time there, but both times it was way too warm inside making it an uncomfortable meal . . . particularly when you're dressed up and trying to "stay cool"."

  • "From the food to the service to the ambiance, I loved every single thing about dinner at Church & Main. We were very impressed with the whole staff; they were very knowledgeable when it came to picking out wine and recommending dishes. My friend and I got the 2 specials of the night, a salmon dish and a pasta dish, which were so nicely prepared and bursting with flavors. For dessert you must try the Chocolate Bliss. Out. of. this. world. I can't wait to come back to C&M! "

  • "So glad we had a reservation because the place was packed this past Friday night. We sat at the bar for about 45 mins prior to being seated--our choice--we'd arrived early for this purpose. We had a drink, but the bartender never bothered to come back and ask if we wanted another one, and at the time the bar wasn't very full yet. He was more interested in the younger couple a few seats down. Our waiter was great, very polite and attentive. The food was amazing. Scallops for my wife and steak for me, and we shared both. Perfection on both counts. Dessert was key lime pie and coffee which was also very good. Our only complaints were the bartender and the fact that it was about 100 degrees in the restaurant. Other people were saying same."

  • "the calamari appetizer was one of the best we've ever had. light and crispy and perfect sweet/spicy sauce to go with it. I had the herb pork loin - delicious and tender. my husband had the taco special - lobster & scallops - he said it was also delicious. we shared the pecan pie/tart and it was also delicious! wish i'd had my own! "

  • "All in all, better than expected. I felt they were really trying to do things right. The food really was outstanding, the ambiance a weak very good... the high ceilings reduce the noise a lot, but the abundant black curtains make it seem like they're taking the easy way out in the decor department, as if it was quickly put together theatre set. The service for the most part very good, but there's a difference in quality between and earnest college student and true professional wait staff. The wine list was okay... but the markup too high for the product."

  • "We chose this restaurant initially because they took reservations and we knew it would be a busy Saturday night. We were so happy that we did because the food was outstanding. Everything about the dinner was excellent. I would definitely recommend this restaurant."

  • "My wife and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary at Church and Main. This was not our first visit. The staff knew of the celebration and made certain that we had a table with some privacy. The staff was very attentive, but not overbearing. The complimentary champagne was wonderful. This was an unrushed meal, as always. The food is superb, the wine list is excellent, the ambiance is special and the staff is very knowledgeable about both food and drink. We recommend this restaurant to friends on a regular basis and always book it for special occasions. It was the perfect beginning to a perfect evening, one that we will long remember."

  • "Locals talk about how Church & Main is trying to find its identity after several recent changes. We were very pleased with the new Spring/Summer menu and its creative choices (a deconstructed cioppino, for example, creative cocktail specials that were not all sweet, the choice of small plates or large ones, and the decision to connect with local suppliers and to work with a local co-op market. The waitstaff and the General Manger loved to talk about food (always a good sign). The place needs a new coat of paint (hopefully not so dark) and the live music can get a bit loud, but large tables (even the two-tops) and their placement encouraged conversation, and the waitstaff went out of its way to accommodate seating preferences & service."

  • "Service was as bad as I can remember. Our waitress took around 15 minutes to come by our table. Water glasses never refilled. Never checked if we needed anything or if things were satisfactory. Gnocchi were severely over cooked and oily with far too much thyme. Chicken cordon blu was bland but not as bad as the gnocchi server took forever to bring our check. Most unsatisfactory meal, for a hefty price, that I have had in some time."

  • "Excellent food prepared with creative thought. Interesting and enticing cocktails, Our waitress was attentive and pleasant. The octopus and polenta appetizers were delicious as were our dinnrers. The homemade ice cream with house made peanut brittle was a great way to end the meal."

  • "I have passed Church & Main many times ans have never eaten there. For some reason most of thebusual places we eat had no reservations available. We gave Church & Main a try. It was great and will be on list in the future. The staff were great. The food was amazing. Highly recommended."

  • "The service was good but not of professional caliber. Server addressed only me a few times but didn't ask my husband if he needed anything as if I was to speak for him. I had the cheese board and the cioppini with Chorizo was ok only because I do tolerate hot and spicy foods occasionally but certainly was not warned of it's degree of spiciness. Largely mussels and maybe 2 large sea scallop sliced in half with about 2oz of cooked white fish broken up in it. Not a good value for what I paid. My husbands steak was nice although not the most tender we have ever had and the caesar salad ran the norm. In my opinion, too few wines by the glass. Not everyone wants to purchase a whole bottle. Probably won't venture back to BVT just to eat there."

  • "We had to pick up my son at Burlington airport so we consulted open table for advice for a spot for dinner first. We dined at Church and Main. We enjoyed our meals very much. I had the scallops and they were delicious. Our waiter Stephen was sweet and attentive. We enjoyed some nice wine. The evening in Burlington was brutally cold on a quiet Wednesday night, the restaurant was fairly empty. It looked like a nice bar. I think we will come again in the summer."

  • "We enjoyed the romantic atmosphere but were a bit disappointed by the lack of vegetarian options. Our server was able to accommodate my girlfriend and I by offering us an entree of the prixe fixe menu, but it would have been nice to have the option of an appetizer other than a cheese board. Wine was nice and the overall experience was positive, but menu options are very limited if you don't eat meat."

  • "I love Church & Main. I am so happy they are finally open on Sundays (and with the Church Service menu)!!! This is a great spot to get a craft cocktail and enjoy local Vermont food with a twist. The service is spectacular with a true neighborhood feel. I always end up in a great conversation at the bar sipping on a champagne cocktail. Definitely recommend the Spanish Influence as an appetizer. It is one of the best places to see and be seen in town. Will be coming back soon."

  • "I don't mind going to a restaurant and spending 100 dollars for two people or even for myself alone, but I shouldn't leave hungry. The entre's were 28 and 32 respectively and they should have been considered a good sized appitizer. They have appitizers on the menu, but I can't imagine how small they would have been. We ended getting a glass of wine each, the "entres" and a shared desert for $105 before tip. We went around the corner for a small app to curb the hunger. I wish them luck, but we're definitely not going back there."
