A word from Chotto
In Japanese, "chotto" indicates a small unit of measure. An informal term used in a wide variety of casual situations among friends, chotto can mean "a little," "for a moment," "excuse me," or to soften the sound of a request.

Chotto's small, shareable plates are crafted using a combination of Japanese staple ingredients and fresh products from local farms, ranches, and fish markets, prepared using Japanese techniques and cooking methods.

Our beverage program is similar to our cuisine in that we will have a selection of "chotto" by the glass drinks. We will feature fresh, unique cocktails made with Japanese sake and shochu, as well as an international selection of wine and beer.

The most innovative menu I've experienced in some time. The bacon mochi dish was to die for. The hamachi tartare as well -- and the service, outstanding! The ambience was "smoky" without actually being smoky (like it was almost out of an old movie...) and the wait staff gave us great recommendations.

My first visit to Chotto was on a busy Saturday night, the service was so-so and they were out of many of their popular dishes (bacon mochi, short rib etc.) The staff was unapologetic. Initially turned us off. Second visit on a quiet Tuesday night. Had a 5 course tasting menu. Food was excellent and was a nice way to try several of their best menu items. Both times was pricey - $80-$100 for a couple.

Was a quiet Monday night, they close at 10:00 and we arrived at 9:45 (late flight) but bar tender Adam made us feel welcome and unhurried, provided tastes of several new-to-us sakes, made excellent food suggestions and dispensed a fun and inviting experience. Will definitely return to try other tempting dishes !

We had a 5 course prix fixe menu of sashimi salad, bacon-wrapped mochi, two day miso-soaked black cod with mushrooms, grilled skirt steak with brussel sprouts and garlic fried rice, and sweet potato donuts with caramel and black sesame icecream. Everything was very delicious and filling. The bacon-wrapped mochi is one of their famous dishes - the bacon on the outside is very flavorful and crunchy while the mochi is slightly chewy and flavorless. A unique combination. The service was great and there weren't a lot of people there so they were very attentive. I'd definitely recommend the place.

My friend and I took advantage of the Bloomspot certificate. Our certificate was good for $72 for two but they gave us a pre-fixe sake pairing menu at $30 each but no sake included. No explanation given but we also didn't press thinking that it was a last minute menu substitution. We enjoyed all the dishes. Nice presentation but couple of the plates were chipped. Our wait people were nice and friendly. We also shared a tasty but expensive miso kimchee ramen. I would revisit to try out other menu items.

I wish I lived in SF, so that I could frequent Chotto on a regular basis. The food and ambiance of Chotto are reminiscent of those great little places that you find all over Tokyo. The food is inventive, but authentic and so incredibly tasty. This time we used a Groupon for a 5 course dinner for 2 (2 Groupons + a few extra dishes for 5 people in our party) and all 5 dishes were so good and the portions were very generous! The Bacon Mochi is a must and the garlic shiso rice and fried brussel sprouts that accompanied the grilled skirt steak were definitely highlights of a very strong menu! The cocktails and hot sake were delicious and the service was so welcoming and friendly. We always enjoy going there when we get to the city.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2012
    Dined on 10/21/2012
I found a Bloomspot deal for a 5-course dinner for two for $51 - but after looking at the menu, we decided to forgo the deal and just order a few dishes each. SO glad we did that - our party suddenly increased from 3 to 6, and I think we got a pretty good sampling of most of the menu. Plus, even with cocktails, it came out to about $35 per person. We couldn't believe it! Stand outs: Bacon Mochi: SO good. Whatever you do, don't miss out on this. We ordered 4 plates! Beef tongue: tender and delish Chicken meatballs: sounds boring, was super good calamari (not fried, can't remember the actual name): tender, delicious. Duck: fatty, yummy Ehs: uni risotto: I LOVE uni, but this wasn't quite uni enough for me. Kind of bland. Pork jowl

  • My second favorite izakaya
    KimcheeHVIP
    Dined on 10/19/2012
My second favorite izakaya in SF. The scallop-uni crudo was by far the best bite of the night! The bacon-wrapped mochi was also wonderfully grilled; not as gummy as other places I've tried. I thought the corn/green onion fritters were just okay. And the chicken liver skewer was extremely minerally and the pieces were quite large. We did love the duck and the jowl skewers though. The kakuni was good but not amazing. And the beef tongue was pretty good, the chimicurri sauce with it was even better. We were sad to hear the profiteroles were out as the cocounut chocolate ice cream was a little lacking in texture. But the sweet potato beignets with black sesame ice cream was on point! I also really enjoyed the ginger lemon soda.

I can't stop thinking about the pork belly. The bacon wrapped moshi was hard to stop eating as well. The calamari dish is what I will be back for again and again. The sashimi was mediocre. The sake is a little overpriced. Modern atmosphere and a pleasant server. All in all a lovely experience.

I really enjoyed my visit to Chotta. The noise level was conducive to conversation and the decor was modern, but not overly trendy. For our meal we tried the Beef Tongue, Black Cod special, seaweed salad, Bacon Mochi, Hamachi Sashimi, and a dessert of fried bananas. All except the seaweed salad were quite good, with the black cod being the undisputed highlight of the meal.

We tried a few different dishes, each better than the last. I have been a few other times, and truly enjoyed every thing I tried. The only downside can be the noise level. There was a very loud group there for happy hour that didn't care that it's a fairly small space, and they were quite disruptive. But overall, I think this is a great place.

The service was great and all the servers were very knowledgable on the menu and made great suggesstions for us. They were quick to help us put out 6months old stroller in back, so very kid/family friendly. Also Chef Ronnie is great and really knows what he is doing. Can't wait to go back

If you're tired of "going out for sushi" and crave more of the cooked izakaya-style Japanese food, this is the place to go! The small tapas style dishes are mind-blowing. Their ramen there is absolutely delicious as well. We love all their different skewers, the raw dishes (personal favorite is the Uni Hotate), and everything else in between. If you're not sure what to order, there are a few "sampler" style options for their oysters as well as their skewers. I would give those a shot to get a small taste of everything.

Wow, what an eye-opening experience! This was my first time at an Izakaya place; I went with my wife and a guest from Switzerland. We had the flight of Shōchū (a first for us), which we enjoyed tremendously. Then we shared about 10 dishes, all of which were spectacularly delicious. It's hard to pick ones out from the others, but the pork belly, the beef tongue and the calamari deserve special mention. I highly recommend this restaurant, and I'll be sure to come back!

Food excellent; waitstaff super friendly; restaurant clean/nicely dressed, get a reservation. This was our first visit, but not our last. It's a small space so it's a little crowded and loud. Would have given it 5 stars, but I'm really perticular about waiting when I have reservations. To bypass this issue go late; but beware, they run out of menu items--but have many other yummy choices. Management really needs to hire a host/ess to man reservations. The waitstaff does it and it seems the reservations easily overlap; add walk-ins to the equation and it gets messy. The bar is for seating, so there isn't an area to have a drink and wait for your table. Our server was great and made up for any inconvenience with a gratis sake
