A word from Chotto
In Japanese, "chotto" indicates a small unit of measure. An informal term used in a wide variety of casual situations among friends, chotto can mean "a little," "for a moment," "excuse me," or to soften the sound of a request.

Chotto's small, shareable plates are crafted using a combination of Japanese staple ingredients and fresh products from local farms, ranches, and fish markets, prepared using Japanese techniques and cooking methods.

Our beverage program is similar to our cuisine in that we will have a selection of "chotto" by the glass drinks. We will feature fresh, unique cocktails made with Japanese sake and shochu, as well as an international selection of wine and beer.

Diner Reviews
  • "We been to Chotto a number of times and the quality of the food remains excellent. The only complaint is the service which can be on the slow side. We like the tasting menu - it always seems to have balance between the courses and there is always new offerings. They also have an extensive sake and shochu list. On this trip the tasting menu included uni crostini, oyster shooters, beet salad, shirataki carbonara, tofu gelee and wagyu steak & Hokkaido scallops. We also had the yuzu ponzu calamari, saba & kamo. Don't miss the bacon mocha."

  • "We had a number of items, plus all the specials and everything was delicious. This sounds lame but they make the best gyozo I've ever had. One drunk group in the corner was screaming, otherwise the ambiance was great. "

  • "Took my girlfriend out for dinner - she had never tried izakaya style Japanese food before and we both loved it. Very low-key, delicious food, great ambiance. The staff was friendly, though not quite as attentive as I might hope. I'll admit my standards are very high and we had a lovely time. I'm probably being knit-picky. Highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "the Spicy ramen and grilled beef tounge are outstanding!"

  • "Food has greatly improved since my first visit when they newly opened a few years ago. We order about 2-3 little plates per person and ended with a ramen to share. The soup for the ramen was ok but the noodle was too soft. Don't think I'd order again. Bacon mochi was delicious! I'd love to eat an order by myself next time. Great specialty cocktails but too light on alcohol."

  • "We were seated and just sat there for over 15 minutes before our grumpy waitress finally came by to ask if we wanted a drink. The service was bad and the food was boring and bland. It was both of our 2nd time trying the restaurant and we won't ever be coming back. "

  • "My husband loves sushi. I do not. So Chotto was the perfect place for us to both get what we wanted. We both left full, happy, and vowing to return."

  • "went for the gilt city 6 course menu. Nothing on the main menu was on the special menu. The oysters were not tasty. They served a silken tofu gelee. when i asked what it was I got the response " i don't know, some kind of tofu". The pasta would have been good except it was smothered in a heavy bechemel sauce. The last course was good. It was seared scallops and beautifully prepared beef. When the bill came, I was shocked to see the tip and tax on the original price. I know to tip on the original price, but was shocked that they taxed the original price. When you buy something for sale, you don't get taxed on the original price. overall i will not be returning to this establishment."

  • "Not a false note-I lived in Japan for 2 years and love traditional Japanese food- I typically don't like modern interpretations or "fusion" but Chotto got it just right. Every small plate was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented - our party of 6 would all come again!"

  • "Always so friendly and food is delicious...service is very good....we will be back"

  • "Food was yummy. Very good selection of cocktail, wine and sake. My favorite dishes are the Bacon Mochi, Beef Tongue (very tender & juicy), Duck Breast yakitori (very juicy and tasty). The spicy miso Ramen was just right, not too spicy and overpowering."

  • "I visited the restaurant with my Japanese colleagues and everyone was really satisfied with food and atmosphere. It is a little the arranged Japanese food and stroke a good balance between the tradition and creativity."

  • "Arrived for an early dinner so there were not many people yet. Sat at the bar and got quick, professional service. There are some great happy hour specials on food and drinks. Food was very tasty but it was only me so I did not really get the chance to taste many things. Overall, the place has potential for me, but I need to go back with friends to get a better sense of the place and food."

  • "We love coming here. One of the places we miss the most from the city since we moved out. We had a group of six in the booth in the back and felt like we had a private party. We must have tried 12 dishes amongst the group. The ramen is one of the best in the city. Other highlights are the crudos and the tempura banana dessert."

  • "This has been my go to place for a great night out. The food is brought out in an order that compliments the flow of the meal and have never ordered something that has not stimulated my taste buds and left me wanting more."

  • "We ate here on a recent visit to San Fran. Chose this place because we have nothing like it in Oklahoma. I enjoyed it a lot. The Cuisine is sort of a Japanese tapas style. The 2 of us split 6 dishes. We had some some hits and misses, but the fried tuna roll was a home run and the seasonal mushrooms were a triple."

  • "by far, one of the best spots in sf! amazing short ribs, incredible garlic fried rice, succulent pork belly and the dessert... doughnut holes with black sesame ice cream was insane."

  • "I don't go out dining much but this was my second time going to Chotto's. I was kind of disappointed because originally I had gotten a baby calamari with aoili before like a salad but this time it was in tempura, tasted good but not the same. In fact the calamari itself could not be tasted strongly under the taste of the batter and aoili mayonnaise, which made me mistake it as the tempura dish that is right above it on the menu."

  • "Chotto was recommended to me by my brother, who has already gone here several times. The bacon wrapped mochi was different, but supposedly the things to try are the uni pasta (if you like uni) and the steak. Our party of 4 got many other dishes, including the pork belly, beef tongue, salad, calamari (cooked in strips, not the usual fried calamari) ... and a few more dishes. The ramen was a bit salty, but everything else was very tasty! Would love to come back. Service was really good too."

  • "I saw a lot of good reviews for this place online so I thought I would give it a try. The food was awful, and at the end of the day that's all I care about. I tried the bacon wrapped mochi because that's what everyone was raving about online. It is really nothing special and if you don't eat it within 5 minutes, they become cold bacon cookies. The butterfish crudo was very good - tender and tasty. The spicy tuna roll was fishy. The meat skewer sampler wasn't good (stay away from the pork jowls). Service was very good. Ambience was nice but rather empty for a Saturday night."

  • "Delicious "Japanese Tapas". Our table of 7 really enjoyed everything we ordered especially the warm frisee and Japanese mushroom salad as well as the butterfish crudo."

  • "Chotto has a nice selection of sashimi and other raw items, some crowd pleasers like gyoza, and some excellent charcoal grilled items. Chotto uses really nice ingredients. The spicy ramen is great and a very filling end to the meal. An izakaya should be a place to drink as much as a place to eat and they have a nice selection of sake and helpful staff if you need some direction. (I do, but I also pretty much stick with beer.) Not sure why this place hasn't really taken off but it's a great choice for something a little different. Go there."

  • "This is a fairly small restaurant seating maybe 40. Bar and cocktail area in front was noisy after 8 pm on Saturday.. Tables for 2-4 on side are close to noise. One table for 6 in rear is secluded and fairly quiet. Reasonable price, good food, service was a little slow at times. Unique because they serve small plates so a group can order many different items and have it served family style so everyone can taste a variety of dishes. No sushi here but plenty of other sushi places in SF. Parking can be challenging in this area just off Chestnut Street where there are many restaurants and shops clustered together."

  • "Good food. It was really hard to get any service. We spent a lot of time trying to wait the server down. My beer took 20 minutes to arrive. I think they forgot about an appetizer and I had to ask for it 3 times. It Didn't come into we ate all our food already. The slow service turned our dinner time into 2 hours instead of a normal 1 hour dinner."

  • "Get the spicy ramen and bacon wrapped mochi! Beef tongue was chewy and other dishes were lackluster."

  • "The soba was quite good. The fish was meh. Did not sample any of the meat dishes. Grilled mushrooms and salad salad also only fair. Service mediocre and uninspired."

  • "Excellent food with OK service. Our waiter was fine but even though I had a reservation the hostess, who is always unfriendly, gave us a tall bar-type table. OK it's tolerable but would have preferred a regular table. Sake was OK- nothing memorable but the food is consistently good, flavorful with attention to texture and presentation. Theirs is my favorite spicy tuna roll in the city."

  • "Almost everything we had here was outstanding. The calamari was meh, but the bacon mochi, kakuni, crudo, ramen, short ribs, etc etc were all amazing. Beer was fresh and reasonably-priced too. Very very highly recommended."

  • "Was late for our reservation by about 20 minutes and they sat us immediately with no problem and no questions asked. They were very helpful when describing sake flights and dishes. Shared 4 dishes among 3 friends: hamachi ceviche special with a quail egg (not on the menu, daily special), ramen, bacon wrapped mochi, and the sampler skewers. The food was tasty and the place got busier toward the end of our meal around 9pm. Great location with tons of bars nearby."
