A word from Chote Nawab
Chote Nawab is restaurateur Shiva Natarajan’s latest culinary addition to Murray Hill. Chote Nawab quite literally translates to “Little Prince.” The Nawabs of India, mainly in the city of Lucknow, were very much the foodies of their day, known for their elaborate royal kitchens, hospitality and of course their Kababs. Chote Nawab features Kababs from Lucknow and “dum” Biryani from Hyderabad, which is cooked using a sealed pot technique to maximize flavor. The menu also has regional dishes from Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. Chote Nawab combines modern design elements, such as concrete walls, with Indian themed murals to create a contemporary, yet warm ambiance, which is a reflection of its in-house spice blends and authentic culinary style.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Good authentic food; nice ambience and nice for an office dinner. But service lets this place down - waiters are abrupt and need help clearing the tables and clear them before you've finished! Would still recommend."

  • "I've dined here many times and the food is very good, well prepared, and nicely presented. The menu is clear and it's easy to order with confidence. Modern decor a step above most restaurants on Curry Row. However, service is on the careless side. Stick to beer, wine, and the specialty drinks listed on the menus. The bar cannot mix a regular drink like a gimlet. The desserts are terrible but the hot tea is a treat."

  • "This restaurant has become one of the rare places in NYC I return to over and over. Great food for a great value. My favorites are the Sarsonwali Tikka and Bindi Sasuralwali."

  • "If you want authentic dum pukht style mutton or chicken biriyani this is the place! The appetizers are Excellent and the prices reasonable. Going back"

  • "Ever since we moved back from London, we've been trying to find decent authentic Indian food in NY or Long Island. Well after trying both mid-range and high end restaurants, we had basically given up; that is, until we found Chote Nawab! Simply unforgettable. Just the right spice and so authentically flavored. We couldn't recommend it more highly. The only reason I give it 4 stars out of 5 (instead of 5 stars) is more due to the faster pace and loudness of the restaurant. But for top Indian cuisine in NYC, look to no other."

  • "After living in India for 2 years and being entrenched in an Indian family I know good Indian food. This is a great choice in NYC."

  • "We eat quite a bit of Indian food and definitely found this above par."

  • "In general - very good food. We were a party of four and everybody liked the food they ordered a lot. I have a garlic allergy and they made sure this was taken care of. However, some of the dishes were clearly prepared in advance as I could not order them without garlic. This is a little minus in my view. The staff were friendly and had a good sense of humor."

  • "Food was fantastic, albeit a little expensive for the portion sizes. Weird-but-true fact: best mango lassie I've ever had, as I normally don't like them!"
    Dined on 4/14/2014
  • "The food was average, I had high expectations for the tunde kebab and was disappointed. The food is good by "New York" standards. If you have been to India and had authentic indian food, you will be disappointed. The Assorted kebabs were tasty. Overall it is your typical new york indian restaurant, food was average, this places lacks the "wow factor""

  • "There was some kind of flavor missing from the curries we ordered. The chicken tika masala and the lamb red curry were just ok. Rice should come with the curry, we had to order it separately. It was ok. Nothing like the old Banana Leaf and their flavorful curries."

  • "Best Indian food I have had outside of London. The lunch special is a great deal. Will definitely be back again!"
    Dined on 2/26/2014
  • "Excellent Indian food-you can choose spice levels: mild, medium, hot. We got mild chicken tikka masala (very good), medium lamb madras (very good) medium shrimp curry (good). One nice perk was getting the windowside table looking out to the lit Empire State Bldg. Would eat here again."

  • "I was with a party of 3 and we all enjoyed sharing our appetizers and main courses - The food was very flavorful with intense curry, and hot pepper flavors - it was a joy and superior to other Indian restaurants in the area. It's 5 Yelp Stars are well deserved. I'd definitely go again and recommend to friends."

  • "Te food was well prepared, fresh...had not been left warming for hours as is the case in some Indian restaurants. Quiet at lunchtime, though I've heard it can get noisy at dinner."

  • "And some choices I have not seen in another restaurant here in the US. Only in India! Vege seekh Kabab. Awesome!"

  • "Chose this randomly off a Yelp review and was really pleased. Quality food and excellent service! Would definitely return."

  • "ok Indian. Tried the Tunde Ka Kabob (minced lamb patty) appetizer that's been raved about online. Wasn't amazing, rather bland. Bindi Sasuralwali (okra) was better. Chicken Vindaloo was boring. Stay away from cocktails, poorly mixed; stick to the beer or whiskey. Service was friendly, attentive. There is better Indian in Murray Hill."

  • "Their Malai Kofta is Must-Try. Some of the other items could be a tad bit less greasy. The rotis and naans are excellent as well and the staff is very polite and pleasant."

  • "This was my first foray to "Curry Hill" so I read many reviews and Chote Nawab had excellent ones! It lived up to the reviews, as everything we ate was delicious, perfectly spiced. I ordered the mixed kebab plate for $20! It was so much food, enough truly for 3 people to share it with a vegetable dish and be stuffed. Most of it had to go home with my friend as I was leaving town. It was truly amazing how much chicken, shrimp, lamb, etc was piled on this plate! Unbelievable and so moist and delicious. We had paleek paneer (spinach with cheese cubes) and it was also filled with large and luscious paneer Great Naan, buttery and crispy and soft at the same time. Excellent chutneys too. Highly recommended. I want to go back."

  • "Had their lunch menu. the food was delicious. indian lunches have always been a bargain pricewise. this holds true at chote nawab as well with the added fact that the food is delicious."

  • "This was my first experience with Indian food. I was not disappointed at all. The food was great and service was awesome. The waiter we had gave us suggestions and he was spot on. I would recommend this place to my friends and family"

  • "I went with a group of 3 for dinner. We had a reservation and were promptly seated. The menu has a lot of the standards (chicken tikka masala, biryani), but I would recommend being adventurous and trying one of the regional specialties. I was blown away by the Mirapakaya Kodi (chicken tossed with coconut, green chilies and curry leaves), a real stand-out, spicy and tangy. The Malai Kofte were big and and had light texture (not a carb bomb, not greasy), a sweet creamy sauce that was a nice counterpoint to the spicy chicken. Efficient service, especially considering that it was packed! I want to go back and try everything else..."

  • "Chote Nowab is good, but it doesn't stand out in a neighborhood full of similar quality restaurants."
    Dined on 7/16/2013
  • "There is an eggplant appetizer that is just wonderful. Portions are big. Hot here means hot. The vindaloo is outstanding as is the aloo paratha. It has become our favorite Indian rest."

  • "We'll still keep returning, despite the din. The food is that good."
    Dined on 7/3/2013
  • "This is really the best presentation of biryani I've ever seen. It comes in a pot with a thick puffy delicious naan baked on top. Really killer!"

  • "Chote Nawab has the best combination of food, service, and ambiance in this part of Manhattan for its genre. I discovered it while walking with a friend several months ago, and I have been back to entertain with many different friends and colleagues."

  • "Not a standout - perfectly fine food - but not much better than less expensive neighborhood offerings - nicer surroundings however. Kind of pricey for the quality actually comparatively (100+ for 4)"

  • "Seems like a very reliable choice for Indian. Will likely order from here in the future."

  • "Service both slow and rude. Should not take two hours and repeated nagging to get food. While food was good, had this issue twice and will never ever go back or recommend."
    Dined on 4/2/2013
  • "Good food, but okay service. It was extremely noisy (granted it was a Friday night). We were asked to promptly leave after paying our bill. We had lefts over and requested them to pack it - got home and realized they packed 2 entrees (one non-vegetarian and one vegetarian) in one container.."
