Chops Restaurant & Bar reviews from OpenTable diners
  • Enjoyable and pleasant.

We enjoyed dinner before a show. The 8 oz. filet was wonderfully tender and more than enough. Although I thought the asparagus at $10 was pricey, it would have served 2-3 people. The Veal Parmesan was typical, but plentiful. Again, the pasta was extra at $6 but enough to feed 2 to 3 people. The wait staff was efficient and accommodating. Perhaps they should have mentioned that the sides were so large. It was interesting to visit the restaurant, housed in the 1868 building of the Philadelphia Saving Fund Society where I had worked in the 1960s. It all looked so familiar and yet updated in an art deco style. That part of our experience made it especially fun.

We were there early on a Saturday evening so the restaurant was still filling up. Our waiter was very attentive. My favorite is the chopped salad and the crab cake. My husband enjoyed the pork chop. Portions were large enough to take home a chop and crab cake. I definitely will go back.

A beautiful setting awaits the diner. The locale is elegant and the seating comfortable. The serving staff knowledgeable and professional. The food is good but not great. We were there for lunch and ordered a Wyagu/Kobe Beefburger which should have been melt in your mouth but it was not quite that - being dry. The french fries were soggy and the bun was barely there (sugary and overly doughy). Bottom line the food did not live up to the rest of the offer and management needs to improve to ensure this wonderful place lives on.

Overall a nice relaxed evening with good food and drink. One significant glitch however was finding a piece of metal wire in the asparagus soup. Waiter took the soup price off the tab, but there was no apology or concern by the waiter or restaurant. It was handled like it happened every day!

Waiter would rather hear himself speak than you at the table. It was like he would plow through your conversation. I went there for a business lunch and we could barley get a word in because the waiter kept interrupting. The food is OK, but the service was so disruptive. A stranger thing was that waiter was also training a new employee.

I was very dissappointed with the food quality. I expected much better quality of food preparation. One of our meals was Filet which was prepared perfectly. The other meal was Filet Medalians Oscar (the crab was excellent, medalians just OK). They forgot the Holandaise sauce. The carrot cake dessert had a burnt taste.

I had the salad special that contained asparagus, chopped tomatoes, red onions, bacon, and shrimp. It was absolutely delicious. I could have eaten this for dinner along with a roll. I also had the horseradish-crusted halibut, which was sensational. It is very difficult to get halibut in the NJ/Philly area, so I order it whenever I see it on a menu. THis entree does not disappoint.

Had a 9 PM seating on Valentine's day. We both enjoyed our meals (NY Strip and swordfish steak) but didn't think they were anything extraordinary for the higher-than-average price tag. We also expected a little more of the ambiance. I would go again, just with slightly lower expectations the second time around.

Went there with my wife for Valentine's Day. The appearance of the restaurant is attractive with a unique layout and architecture. The steaks, both Filet Mignon and Strip Steak were flavorful. Baked potato not great...kind of hard and crunchy in spots. Mushrooms were outstanding. Bread was excellent. Sodas in 8-oz bottles were kind of skimpy for the price. Service from the waiter was very attentive. Overall, very good.

Food was excellent and the portions were generous. Server was quirky and fun and certainly deserved his 25% tip! (Thanks Darren!) Despite the description on OpenTable's site that the dishes were $30 and under and they offered valet service, neither is true. Some of the entrees indeed were under $30 but not all. Everything is alacarte too, so it can get expensive. As far as the valet, it was bitter cold last night here in Philly and it was snowing. Despite that, the six of us made our way to Chops expecting to get into the warmth quickly. That didn't happen. However, the food, the service, the atmosphere and certainly the friends, made it all worth while. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and will definitely go back.

  • Restaurant week at Chops
    OpenTable Diner Since 2013
    Dined on 2/1/2013
Went to Chops on Friday night during restaurant week with 5 friends. The ambiance was great! Our server was very nice also. We had the wedge salad, braised beef gnocchi, crab cakes, and petite filets. We all agreed that our food was good, but nothing exceptional. I'd maybe give this place another try since it was restaurant week and I'm sure they were busier than usual. But there are definitely other steakhouses in the city that were much better than the meal I had here, so I'd most like choose them over Chops. That being said, the service was pretty good, the ambiance was very nice, and the food was okay- no major complaints, but nothing spectacular.

Our waiter no sooner delivered our food and was asking if we were finished. The restaurant was not full, we purposely made a later reservation. It was the worst dining experience I have ever had. My soup was not hot. My dinner was beyond rushed. The woman at the next table was hit in the neck by another waiter. He was rushing and basically running inbetween tables. He barely stopped to see how she was. The food was average. The service was so poor. I would never go back and would not recommend this restaurant.

Food was just ok. I ordered the filet mignon, and since this is a steakhouse, I was anticipating a great meal. Filet was just ok! Food wasn't served as hot as I'd like. Mashed potatoes were bland, and I needed to add salt and butter. Service was good. Our server checked on us often and made sure we had everything we needed.

Food was extremely lackluster. Granted it was restaurant week, but from what I have heard its the same when it isn't restaurant well. When you mess up the easy things, it's all down hill from there. Everything was under seasoned. Broccoli was undercooked. Mashed potatoes weren't mashed right. Desserts tasted like they were frozen and thawed out to serve. Drink I ordered was pathetic. Basically pulverized cucumber mixed with gin and they forgot to add the lime juice. Had to chew the cucumber because the seeds and pulp were still in the drink. Definitely a miss. Time would be better spent at other steakhouses in the city.

I had heard great things about Chops but was very disappointed. The ambiance was very nice, however, the service was TERRIBLE!!!!! Our waiter only came to our table when our food came out & he never came back to check on our table to make sure we had everything (or needed anything). The most we saw him was when it was time for us to pay the bill which he came back several times for (it was interesting to see that we COULD HAVE seen him more frequently). As for the food it was OK, the chicken I had was too dry, the steak that my friend had was too done which ended up dry and they were out of ice cream for the pie. Probably won't be visiting in the future.

This was our 2nd trip to CHOPS. It was restaurant week in Phila, so we took advantage of the price fix menu. Our Caesar salad was excellent, crab cakes delicious and chocolate cake ---yummy. My husband had a fabulous pork chop with cheddar grits. He said it was very tasty. We come to the city for the theatre, and like to try different places, but CHOPS certainly was deserving of a repeat. The service was wonderful and our waiter was very attentive. Great location, and easy to get to. I give it a TEN !!!
