  • AN alternative to the Keg

We often dine at the Keg and would consider this a slightly cheaper alternative. Tasty food and good service. I have often ordered the Steak Oscar which give you 2 skimpy pieces of asparagus at Chop while at the Keg you get substantial pieces. My husband felt that the peppercorn steak at the Keg is much more flavorful than the one at Chop, but it was still good.

We are long time customers of chop, but our last experience was a bit disappointing We Dined on a Saturday night with another couple. Appetizer (steak bites) were cold, they did replace, but just okay 2nd time around. They were suppose to bring us a 2nd loaf of bread but it never showed up. We had to hail someone down to get water at the table which should of been offered from the beginning. Asked for our salad to be spilt into 2 dishes and they forgot. Asked for the salad dressing on the side But it was brought to the table with it already on. Part way through eating the salad the chicken that was supposed to be on the salad showed up on a separate plate. Attention to details does matter, and this time they were missed

We go to Chop often - at least once a month and it's always terrific, which is what made our visit on Tuesday night curious. - The bread that they bring at the start of the meal was so hard and stale it was inedible - Somehow they forgot to put the mashed potatoes on my plate and had to flag down a server to get the rest of my meal - The waitress was nowhere to be found for most of the evening. Fortunately the waiter and waitress in the next sections took note and covered for her as best as they could. When you have to get up and walk through the restaurant to look for your waitress, it's not a good sign. Assuming we just caught them on a bad night and hoping next time will be back to their usual high standards.

To understand the food at Chop, let's talk about steak. With steak there are two schools of thought. The first is the "Let the meat speak for itself" school in which the steak has minimal outside flavours applied. Salt and pepper usually. This is the steak purist kind of place. Chop falls into the other school. Their steaks, and most of their menu, are items with their flavours "enhanced" or accompanied by multiple other flavours. Whether spices, or marinades, or glazes, Chop is consistent across their menu in falling into the latter school of cuisine. Now let's be clear, neither method is better than the other and it all comes down to quality of ingredients, skill of preparation, and most importantly, personal preference of the person eating the dish. Chop does what they do well and the food is all excellent, but know that none of it is simple or basic. It all consists of complex flavours, enhanced in multiple ways. If you're a simple meat and potatoes person, this may not be for you. If you like a more European style of food preparation or are wanting to try something new, then you'll love it. The ambience, at least of this particular Chop, is quite nice if you want a cozy dinner with friends or loved ones. It's nicely appointed and classy with comfortable seating and large tables. Chop is more of a date night or conversation with friends over a good meal kind of place. It's not the place for party night and loud crowds. The only real issue with this particular Chop on this particular night was that the background music was totally out of place. Easy listening instrumental, soft classical, or light jazz would have been perfect. On a final note, the staff were phenomenal and each and every one of the handful of people that attended us did a superb job. They were friendly, professional, and went the extra mile to make sure our dining experience was perfect.

This was the best dinner. The most frendly and always polite professional service I have had the pleasure to have and witness. A fantastic ambiance. That's before I tasted the food which was outstanding and looked every bit as good as it tasted. I could say this was my best dining experience in many years of dining in and around Edmonton for my company and myself.

We were visiting Edmonton for the weekend and thought we would go to Chop since we have always enjoyed Chop in Winnipeg. Unfortunately we were both very disappointed. To begin with our server was abrupt and not very friendly - I'm not sure she knew how to smile. Our meals arrived and in both cases the meat was incredibly underdone. We both ordered medium-rare only to receive very rare steaks - mine was worse than my husband's - it was pretty much blue. The rest of the meal was very tasteless - We will never return to Chop in Edmonton and will not recommend it to anyone either.

We are in our late 40's and recently celebrated both our birthdays at Chop, Ellerslie location. We picked this location for ease of access, away from traffic and ample parking. We requested a romantic table away from large groups and families with small children. We walked past many tables with exactly these groups and were taken to a corner booth overlooking a section with other small groups or couples. I thanked them for taking good care of our seating and they assured me they always look at the specific requests people make and do their best to accommodate them. Our server was very knowledgeable and made several recommendations throughout our meal. Had a wonderful meal/experience

When we were seated, my first impression was that it wasn't a good place for groups. There was 6 of us and it was tight feeling. Not an easy place to be social. I heard such great things about the steaks, and for the price, very poor. Steak was small and wasn't cooked properly. They did recook mine, but it took about half an hr and everyone was done eating. Food was very salty. My kids even complained about their fries being salty. The saving grace of the evening was they gave us dessert samplers comped. Very delicious and we were greatful for that. Thank you.

Our waiter did not listen to our requests attentively. Our orders were one steak at bleu rare and the other order at medium rare. Both orders came out as bleu rare. When we told our waiter we wanted one steak cooked at bleu rare, he pretended he did not hear us. The truth was he did not know what bleu rare is!! When we requested to top up for our water, he only topped up one glass when there were two glasses. Food was excellent, but poor service attitude from this particular waiter. Other in house services were excellent

We were there for a special birthday, looked forward to it! The food was less than par, the prime rib had more fat than meat and flavorless. The waiter didn't get the appetizer order correct, one guest ordered a salad, received French onion soup, which none of us ordered. The desserts were excellent, as was the wine. We will not be returning,

We had the prime rib dinner and the short ribs. My wife had the French onion soup and it was pretty salty, as were the vegetable sides and prime rib. Ceasar salad had too much dressing. But overall, it was very good and in line with the high salt level of this type of higher end chain restaurant. Prime rib and short ribs were very tender. Whipped potatoes were very good. Vegetables cooked to the right level. Comparable to, or better than the Keg.

We were out for dinner to celebrate our 39th anniversary. The staff greeted us with warm wishes and the hostess that took us to our table and even took the time to ask us questions on how and where we met. Chris came to our table and introduced himself and he too wished us well on our occasion. He was knowledgeable about the menu and suggested some house food and wine favorites. Our food arrived quick and hot and was delicious. Chris was attentive to our needs throughout our dinner. At the end of our meal he presented us with an anniversary card signed by some of the staff and some other goodies. It's been a long time since we have had a dining experience such as this and we highly recommend this steakhouse to all. Perfect evening

30 minute wait after we arrived. Packed into a tiny table. Wine served in bleach-smelling glasses. Drinks came sporadically, some waiting another 15 minutes. Dinners started coming out after waiting over an hour, and still forgot 2 guests' dishes. No matter, because all were COLD. Cold, overdone and dry steaks. Complaints ignored until we demanded to see the manager. The "Manager" (if she was that) handled situation VERY badly, just inflaming already angry guests. Adding insult to injury, the last dish came out 30 minutes later while she was standing there, to which she had the audacity to suggest this somehow made things right. Place lacks food quality control and staff is not trained. Pitiful.

60th birthday occasion. Good service. Smoked rib eye was quite sinewy. My wife's prime rib had some unknown sauce on it and lacked beef flavor. The last straw was that the Chop did not even comp a desert for my 60th even though they were made aware at the time of booking. So having said all this the lack of quality beef plus not even an acknowledgement of my 60th put us off this restaurant and it is highly unlikely we will return.

Service was fabulous, but the food was nothing special. We ordered the lobster fettuccini. It tasted like regular pasta sauce thrown on some noodles with two dry, rubbery pieces of lobster on too. For $24, I could have made it way better at home. I will happily go to The Keg next time - at least I know I'll be happy with the food.

I had made a reservation for 7:45 for me and my mother and after a short wait we were seated and given two free drinks on the house, our appetizers took longer than usual to come out, the steakhouse cheese toast was amazing, however the "chop experience" salad leaves a lot to be desired.. we both ordered the steak Oscar, and after a 45 minute wait they finally arrived, with my fries barely warm and both steaks loaded with grisly and sinew.. making them chewy and stringy. Probably knenof the worst steaks I've ever had at a restaurant.
