Diner Reviews
  • "We enjoyed a family birthhday celebration over cocktails, appetizers & a great dinner. The oyster/prawn appetizer & sauces were excellent. The entrees were varied & all delicious-duck steak & salmon were served as requested. Excellent choclate cake for dessert"

  • "I was just looking for a new place to take my boyfriend out to. Seriously looked at a few other places and decided on this. Our server was great, our food was great, and their oysters were AMAZING! (midnight Bay, west coast.) Great atmosphere, really dig it. :) I will be going back."

  • "Unfortunately we felt everything was average. The rilletes were good as was the chicken liver mousse but nothing I would go back for. The hanger steak and burger were good and my friend who ordered the ribeye really liked it; all three were pretty good items but a bit pricey. The frustrating part was that their beer selection on the menu did not match at all what they had in stock. Every time we ordered a beer they didn't have it and had to read a separate list. Print new menus! The service was just ok as well. We asked to see the upstairs event space and the manager never came to show us. The server eventually let us up but couldn't answer any questions. I guess I'm glad I tried it but wouldn't go back."

  • "Very cool spot in Wicker Park, delicious food, deadly good drinks, and very helpful waitstaff / bartenders. Can't recommend this place enough. Went for our anniversary and loved it, also great for groups and not so intimate parties as well."

  • "I made reservations with open table days agraf of time. When i got there they informed me that the dining room had a private party. They then informed me that all the seating in the bar area was taken. So they moved me to the bar table in the back corner that had spot lights shining in our faces. I would complain more but just trust me, it didn't get better from here. If you are in the area go next do to tramchmen."

  • "The cocktails and starters were fantastic, entrees not so much. My entree came out cold and rubbery. Not the greatest experience. I guess you win some you loose some."

  • "The food was outstanding and I would definitely go back for that reason. We sat in the butcher shop area which was really cool to see the different cuts and to see the chefs at work. We had a late dinner and so the clubbers started piling in the butcher and bar area which made it loud and crowded and a less comfortable dining experience. On the plus side it was a great people watching spot. In the future, we might request to sit in a different room if there is one"

  • "Quality, freshness and taste of the meats is tremendous. Had the burger and the sausage and peppers. Recommend both. The gnocchi is also an excellent choice. Would definitely return."

  • "While the service was great, our waitress was very friendly, our food fell very flat. The cheese and meat choices we had were excellent and started the meal off on a very positive note. We ordered the beer mussels next. And while the mussels themselves were cooked correctly, the broth had been over reduced, extremely salty, and had raw garlic in it. Clearly the "beer" aspect had been to finish the broth with a Belgium beer, but that was not allowed to cook long enough and the both tasted strongly of the actually alcohol. We finished the meal with the Italian sausage which were extremely dry and overcooked, with little peppers and onions to speak of and a hanger steak that was cooked well, but over salted."

  • "Interesting location without valet except on the w/e Selection was quite broad- Kale salad and the burger were bug hits- so was the rib eye (it does not need the butter on top) Service was pleasant, all questions were answered quickly, food was delivered very fast, and all enjoyed our first time there."

  • "What seems to be a simple menu is actually sophisticated and refined. Simple descriptions give way to fantastic flavors, textures, and preparations. It's a meathead's heaven!"

  • "Took girlfriend here for Valentine's day. I got the salmon, it was good, though a little small for the price since it didn't come with a real side. She got the hanger steak. It was charred on the outside and undercooked on the inside (she ordered it medium-well but the thickest parts were medium-rare) and the portion was VERY small - I'd guess about 5 ounces. As if to compensate for this it came with a mountain of french fries which admittedly were very good, but for the $20 I spent on her plate we expected a lot more meat. Probably won't go back."

  • "We started with a decadent charcuterie plate with both meat and cheese, and tasty wine and cocktails. We then split a delicious NY Strip steak (medium definitely meant medium rare) and sauteed scapes. Maybe it was because we had a 5pm dining time, or that we brought our 4 month old, but the atmosphere wasn't as opulent or romantic as I had hoped for the amount we paid for dinner. We were celebrating a special occasion, but I didn't want a Loop franchise steakhouse, but I guess I wanted more cozy 'warmth'. The ambiance is like a butcher shop. I definitely appreciated the elevator to the second floor, and the first floor area had a nice mix of bar, cafe and butcher shop, plus a cool looking (from a distance) 1st Ward party room."

  • "I came here with a friend on a Friday night. We had a great seat on the main floor, right next to the special event room where a charity event was about to go down. Our waitress was extremely helpful with describing menu items and explaining what paired best with what. We ended up splitting a burger, gnocchi, and the grilled apple salad. Everything was delicious and the ambiance was great -- not too loud and crazy, but lively and fun. You couldn't even tell there was a DJ in the next room. I would recommend this place to anyone, meat lovers especially."

  • "My boyfriend and I tried this place. The service was amazing, the decor was great, and the food excellent. We will def be coming back! The hanger steak and the lobster on the half was NUM!"

  • "Each of our dishes was amazing! I Had the pasta del giorno, which was a handmade pasta with pig cheeks in a simple delish sauce. My Husband had the pork chops which were the best chops i have ever tasted, my friend had the salmon, perfectly cooked, and the other a steak which was also perfectly cooked and delicious! I would definitely recommend. Great wines and beers too, and the meats and cheese plate was delish too!"

  • "My hangar steak was really tasty, and my cocktail was super. The average age of everyone besides my partner and I was about 35-40 years younger. We will definitely try their butcher shop and take out."

  • "We came for lunch on a Saturday and were surprised to see how empty the restaurant was, it made me feel nervous at first- but after we ate I was certain we made a good choice. They had a good selection of sandwiches, a majority of our party ordered the spicy italian sandwich and managed to eat every last bite of it! The sides were perfect for sharing and the beer selection was awesome. Overal a great place to eat and pick up some deli meats from!"

  • "Downstairs: Been to the bar, it's great. Italian beef is legit. Turkey sammich is legit. staff is fun and knowledgable. Tomato app is legit. Upstairs: Hangar steak was great. Pork chop stole the show. Great work, and they've been on their game from day 1, which I believe I was there for."

  • "Disappointing that everything (even a bag of potato chips) is a la carte. It would be better if they offered at least one side included in the price."

  • "While the food, albeit a bit on the small side and a little overpriced, was pretty delicious, if this place is going to last, it better improve on its service... and fast. From the first moment walking in when greeted by vague comments and confusion to our server who bordered on the rude side, I can't imagine Chop Shop will make it to the good weather to use their beautiful outdoor space unless some serious changes are made."

  • "I really wanted to like Chop Shop more than I did. Its a huge place - deli and meat counter right when you walk in, followed by a big bar / tables in the back. A smaller, quieter dining room is upstairs (which is where we sat). The service was hit or miss. He was a friendly server but forgetful and things moved slow. However, the bartender recommended some great glasses of wine. For dinner, two of us ordered burgers, another ordered the steak sandwich and another ordered the pork. To be honest, I've had better burgers. I liked the steak sandwich better. I'm glad we checked out Chop Shop but I don't think I would go back."

  • "Went here with my husband based on a recommendation. We were blown away by not only the food but the drinks. Our waitress was very knowledgable about the menu- something that often doesn't happen at a newer restaurant. She helped us pair drinks with our meals. Overall it was a great experience!"

  • "Love love love the atmosphere, and staff was outstanding. They have a butcher counter and a sweet event space. Good and reasonably priced beer list, interesting cocktails. Food was really good, but portions a tad small and they could really work on presentation. But I'll definitely be back again!"

  • "Very impressive experience from beginning to end. There is a full butcher shop on the main level with some amazing looking selections. We didn't really take the time to fully check out that part of the place due to time constraints. My wife had the gnochi and I tried the porterhouse lamb chops with a shared side of homemade meatballs. Everything was delicious and very fresh. Our waitress, Anna, couldn't have been any better. 5 Stars isn't enough to describe the level of service we recieved. A word of caution...The entre comes more or less ala carte, so if you're looking for starches and veggies to go with your lamb, plan accordingly. Don't miss this gem!"

  • "ok i get the butcher shop/restaurant thing but this place is confused. ok food but i couldn't get past the hideous deli out front. nothing says fail like meeting your date for dinner at a place that looks like a 7-11 deli when you walk in. you can't be all things to all people, are you a 7-11, a butchers, a sports bar, a restaurant or an event space? right now you're a major fail!"

  • "Great ambiance, great drinks, and most importantly GREAT food. The Chop Shop is definitely a welcome addition to the Wicker Park neighborhood and will undoubtedly become a neighborhood favorite for young people, families, and foodies alike. Make sure to try the charcuterie!"
