A word from Chizakaya
By Melding the concept of a Japanese pub with its Chicago locale, Chizakaya introduces and expands upon the izakaya trend by harmonizing Japanese cuisine with contemporary philosophies and techniques, including the importance of using local, seasonal and sustainable resources. Chizakaya is the brainchild of chef/owner Harold Jurado. Chef Harold, a Chicago native, has cooked in such renowned restaurants as Sunda, Charlie Trotter"s (Chicago and Las Vegas) and Japonais (Chicago, New York and Las Vegas). He places the significance of local, seasonal and sustainable ingredients above all else in the kitchen. The source of inspiration is seasonal ingredients from local farms and co-ops, as well as free-range livestock and responsibly sourced fish. Chef Harold aims to showcase these products to their fullest in their intelligent and informed approach to cuisine.

  • BEST JAPANESE PUB FOOD IN CHICAGO!

    Dined on 9/18/2012
Finally...an izakaya style Japanese restaurant in Chicago! It's small, friendly, casual with tasty small-plates. Definitely not for those who think all Japanese restaurants need to serve sushi. The pork belly with slow cooked egg was heavenly. The pork belly is crispy and does not feel too fatty. The chicken skin yakitori was delicious but the chicken wings were disappointing. They were not all wings but a wing and a drummet. The pork belly bow, again was incredibly tasty. Unagi Donburi (barbequed eel over brown rice) was a stand out. There were so many more dishes I wanted to try. Will absolutely go back to try the rest.

It was okay. The drinks, very good - the Manhattan and the Shrine were fantastic. We ordered a lot of the popular dishes and the only dishes I remember eating and liking were the Bao (the pork belly, a must & the best deal) and another pork belly dish with egg sauce. It was good, not great. I won't be going back any time soon because nothing wow'd me. It was a solid restaurant that served above average food. The ambiance was nice, but for a Friday at 7:30pm it was pretty dead. The service was lacking, they didn't help navigate the menu, and they nearly forgot a dish I ordered and it ended up being way too salty. Granted the server apologized, but I was already not impressed it didn't help my sentiment.

Typically my husband and I go to Lure Izakaya for Japanese tapas since we live by Chinatown, but we went here since I had a coupon. Lobster bao was UH-MAZING, hot bun and lobster spiced with some horseradish... YUM! Other high points were the hamachi (bone marrow), beef cheek, and octopus beignets. So-so was the Okonomi-Yaki. Skip on the kimchi (not cold nor fresh enough) and the mushrooms (too salty). My husband liked the honey cake for dessert, but I didn't care for it since I'm not really a cake fan. Overall, we'd definitely come back again and order more of those yummy baos!

On this visit, my friends and I split two of the special bao, one fried oyster and one pork belly. We also had two different types of skewers, baby octopus and wagyu cheek, both incredibly tender. For dinner, I ordered the hamachi kama, and I was not disappointed. I didn't have a cocktail this time, but my friend ordered the Pampelmuse, and she really enjoyed it.

There is far more to Japanese food than sushi, maki and teryaki-and the Japanese pub fare at Chizakaya offers us a sampling of some of this cuisine. Perhaps we were most intrigued by the pig ears, and got them on a lark, daring my wife to taste them. Surprise, very good, sort of like chicarons served with ponzu. But don't worry, much more to choose from, like the excellant raw hamaki with a magnificently unctious, rich fois gras, the many skewers of wings, waygu beef, octopus etc. Good wine and sake list and interesting cocktails. Excellant, friendly service made it an enjoyable dinner. While surely not a destination restuarant, if you are not far away, well worth going.

The Tonkotsu Ramen is absolutely amazing (bone broth cooked for 40 hours) - such rich bone marrow flavor that the soup feels like an energy drink! This is an ideal spot for a larger group to share all the wonderful plates. The cocktail list is very well done. They have about 8-10 specialty cocktails and an extensive sake list. We tried all the cocktails and they were all balanced and well crafted. Only downside is that they only have the ingredients for those cocktails so the bar is not a full stocked bar. The food was excellent and definitely for the more food adventurous. Everything was tasty and beautifully presented. If our server was busy the kitchen staff would bring the items to our table rather than let them sit and wait. Service was fantastic and attentive.

Say 'Japanese' and Americans think 'sushi'... which is only right, as it's American style Sushi :) Chizakaya is japanese food of a different sort - cooked, for one - and classic regional comfort food. favorite dishes: Okonomiyaki is fantastic (like a sea food pancake/omelette) , and hard to find in chicago. They've got it here, and do it right. Takoyaki (octopus dumplings) is something you'd get in a tokyo outdoor park instead of a Hot Dog, and they also do it right.

This was my first experience in a Japanese restaurant. I enjoyed the low-key but refined atmosphere. Nothing intimidating, except maybe deciding among all of the amazing dishes. We ordered the po'bao, the seafood and the pork belly. WOW! All tasted so good! I ordered a special soba with shrimp and mushrooms. I'm not sure if this was the goal, but the dashi sprinkled on top looked like amber grasses waving in the breeze. The fine texture of the dashi paied with the steam coming off the hot soba imparted movevment to the dish, which was enchanting and the flavors were amazing. I will definitely bring family and friends to Chizakaya...I must try more!

My wife in particular is very picky about Asian food, and we have been to Japan many times. The service here is very pleasant and the food is even better. Highlights of the menu include: Anything with pork belly, especially the appetizer with the poached egg sauce All the ramen dishes (very rich broth but very tasty) The wagyu cheek and beef tongue off the kushi yaki menu Unagi donburi Almost everything we've tried here has been good. Very tasty craft cocktails too.It usually isn't too busy also - nice to not need reservations way in

We also did the duck hearts and puffed ears, both great. We feasted, trying 8 dishes and I would get all of them again. I can't imagine why this place is not wall to wall jammed. I loved trying out Chizakaya - it was Japanese food that did not focus on sushi (I don't even think they serve it), and it was delicious. A friend and I opted for the prix fixe menu for Restaurant week, and we were not disappointed. We both enjoyed the octopus balls immensely, and I had the current ramen, which was delicious, and my friend had a different ramen that she very much enjoyed. We both decided we'd be back to check out the other items on the menu. Also try their specialty drinks or opt for a notable sake menu.

We arrived 30 mins early and was seated promptly which was great! There were plenty of available seating so we were surprised we were seated nearest to the door which was cold at times when guests arrived. No big deal but it's those little things that make the dining experience more enjoyable. Overall the meal was mediocre. The pig ears were a bit oily and we couldn't have too much but the dipping sauce was nice and light. We enjoyed the hamachi with bone marrow the best. It was fresh and had great flavor. Most of the kushi yaki were over salted except for the wagyu cheek which was slightly sweet and the baby octopus was nice but also a bit too salty for my liking. Overall I didn't feel the experience lived up to the great yelp reviews.
