Chives Canadian Bistro offers contemporary Canadian cuisine, in a unique casual atmosphere, in the heart of downtown Halifax. The key to Chives' success over the years has been cooking with the use of local, in-season ingredients offering our twist on Canadian cuisine, creating menus using the best and the freshest from the farms and waters of Nova Scotia. Combining a relaxed atmosphere and attentive service both Haligonians and guests from afar love our bistro.
The main dining room balances a cozy and private mood, as does the Private Dining Room for larger groups, but for a special occasion, arrange for seating in the bank vault-turned-wine cellar.   • "We waited quite a while before going to Chives because of the price and the requirement for reservations. Overall we were expecting more from this restaurant. Considering the cost the decor was underwhelming and the food was "just" good. We actually prefer their second restaurant (Two Doors Down) to this one. The braised beef was rather dry and was much better at Two Doors. The lamb was adequate but I found the risotto overpowering. The service was friendly and helpful."

  • "My wife and I brought my friend and his fiance to Chives for a pre wedding dinner. The food was fantastic from the appetizer, which we shared, to the entrees, to the desserts of which we sampled all four. Two of us had the seafood chowder. The smokey flavour from the potatoes was a wonderful addition to the richness of the fresh salmon, scallops, and mussels. My friend chose the duck and was quite impressed, overall, although he found the chorizo that accompanied the dish to be a little overwrought. Myself, I had the pesto crusted Cod. The cod was perfect. Flavourful, tender, absolutely amazing. Overall, it was a wonderful dining experience and I will definitely recommend Chives to others."

  • "The dishes we ordered were well prepared and as described in the menu and by the server. Overall, the quality of the ingredients and preparation was competent, skilled even, but the offerings were by no means unique or specific to the locale. One might have had this dinner of halibut and braised shank of lamb almost anywhere; indeed, we saw both dishes offered several times during our week's stay in the Maritime provinces. For us, the service, which was rushed and not particularly guiding, though we asked for suggestions, drug down the overall experience. We would not avoid or shun the restaurant on a return to Halifax, but we would not seek it out either. On balance, the restaurant offers credible cuisine and adequate service."

  • "Our evening at Chives was well beyond all our expectations. The food was spectacular, the service was impeccable, the staff were extremely hospitable. In every possible way, we loved it. The biscuits at the beginning were to die for. We shared the Snowcrab Spring Rolls with Pork Belly with Hoisin sauce, the Chicken Breast with Pasta Carbonara, and the Pan Seared Halibut, and finished with the Lemon White Chocolate Mousse. We gave four and five stars to every dish. Can't wait to return!"

  • "I chose this Bistro for my partner who was visiting for a week. We arrived and were as if transported. Our server Tirna/Tiernen was as if from Tinra Nog, land of Myth and Mystery. Our food arrived and was stellar. My Cheese Tart with sautéed mushrooms and heavenly leeks, resting upon melted Gouda cheese was as conjuring the Goddesses; was almost beyond humanly delicious. And the crust, Divine. The Market Salad with strawberries sumptuous. To have access to fresh, hot, delicious decaffeinated espresso with which to accompany my Liqueur, was a rare treat. As we walked the day after we ran into tourists on Barrington, who asked about places to eat, without hesitation we said, "Chives.""

  • "Four of us recently enjoyed a celebration dinner on a Sunday evening. The room was colorful, comfortable and although quite busy, we never felt rushed. The service was excellent, our server paced the meal to allow conversation, enjoy some wine and accommodate two Celiac's dietary requirements. The meals were creative, beautifully presented and very generous in serving size! The smoked seafood chowder was a highlight as was the gluten free charcuterie plate. We were all impressed at the variety of local farms and suppliers listed on the menu. The freshness of the food can be tasted in every dish. It was a thoroughly enjoyable meal!"

  • "I dropped my wife at the door and she was immediately seated and brought water while she waited for me to park. When I arrived the waitress brought over two glasses of Prosecco on the house and congratulated us on our anniversary. The specials were explained in great detail and we ordered. A minute or two later, our waitress was back with warm buttermilk biscuits that are to die for. Each course that was brought out was a work of art and tasted even better. The focus on local and seasonal foods was obvious and the results outstanding. The duck special and spring lamb chops were done to perfection. This was our first time here, but absolutely will not be our last time. Love this place."

  • "Noisy restaurant to the point of being difficult to carry on a conversation, detracted from experience. Effort by wait staff to describe menu was intrusive and a bit annoying. Cheese plate appetizer was excellent, chicken was very good, Halibut was too salty, wine was overpriced, 16.50 for 9 Oz of Napa Valley Cab is not good value. I wouldn't go again."

  • "The food and service at this restaurant fell into the very good category for us. The biscuits served before the main entrees were excellent as was the seafood chowder. The lamb dish was also in the excellent category, tender and very flavorful. On the other hand the duck breast, while flavorful was quite tough. Service started out very attentive but soon the restaurant filled and the server was not able to check back as he should have so there were long waits toward the end of the meal to get the bill and to pay. All in all a 4. We would return though."

I'm pretty sure I've never had a larger serving of halibut in my life, but that's not the key point- it was a wonderfully tasty dish, chock full of fiddlehead ferns and various types of new potatoes in a delicious cream sauce. We paired this with a bottle of grüner, which was- inexplicably- the least expensive bottle on the list. "

  • "Paid my first visit to Chives a few days ago and it certainly lived up to its reputation! We were seated promptly and greeted warmly. Our server was knowledgeable and accommodated my gluten-free needs gracefully and well. Three of us had the halibut special and it was cooked absolutely perfectly. Ditto the salmon. Oh, by the way, I would kill for the recipe for the gluten-free biscuits! Nice wine list with reasonable choice and mark-up. Deserts were yummy. All five in our party raved about the meal and would happily hurry back!"

  • "We booked a table here for my partner's birthday that coincided with our visit to Halifax. According to the website, it was one of the top 20 restaurants in Canada. I would put it in the top ten! Chives did not disappoint. The food was amazing, the arrive impeccable. It delivered and then some! Kudos to the chef and our server! We'll be back if we're ever again in the area "

  • "We have cultural reasons why we cannot eat shellfish. On other visits when asked if items with shellfish could be substituted it was no issue. We chose Chives this time because of our fabulous previous experiences. However this time when we had to ask for an adjustment -Lobster risotto was the side with the $38 special- we practically had to beg. The server got irritated, arguing that they don't do substitutions but we could order (at extra cost) a salad to go with it instead. At $38/plate this was ridiculous, putting a terrible start to the night. He 'finally' allowed us to substitute. We also had to ask for basics like fresh pepper. Shame as our guests from out of town left very unimpressed, though typically this restaurant is excellent."

  • "Great restaurant. We've been here a few times and have never disappointed. Last night was no exception except the fish special was a bit overdone on one side. The gnocchi and kale salad was wonderful and the two appetizers were enough for my dinner. The wine was excellent (Zinfandel ). I was a bit surprised there aren't more red options for just glasses of wine. It's tough to get thru a whole bottle if 1/2 diners is the driver. Overall excellent food. The waiter was efficient but didn't smile once. Not once. "

  • "The Chives late winter menu is varied and interesting, with appealing GF and V options. The wine suggestions for each dish are always appreciated. The warm kale salad with feta 'croutons' was delicious. I found the mushrooms in the dressing an odd choice - they didn't take away from the salad, but didn't add taste, a visual contrast or texture. Just...odd. The scallops in my appie were perfectly cooked and in a delicate green curry sauce, but the tomato/quinoa salad on the side was far too cold to be an enjoyable accompaniment. It would be better at room temp. My husband asked for his steak medium rare, but due to the varying thickness of the cut, most of it was bleu. It was tasty though. "

  • "My first time in years, but for sure not the last. Our compliments to the chef. Every dish that arrived on our table was an experience, especially crab ravioli and the fish special of the day. Halibut is always a test for the kitchen. Mine was perfect, served on a bed of lobster risotto, which was cooked to the perfection. My boyfriend said, that was the best duck he had in years. We requested romantic setting I got best seats in the restaurant.(with the exception of a guest talking very loud on the phone next to our table) Service was nice and the dishes well-timed. Great experience! Thank You."

Table was re-set and cleared efficiently throughout the meal without distraction. Friendly and professional.
