Chives Canadian Bistro offers contemporary Canadian cuisine, in a unique casual atmosphere, in the heart of downtown Halifax. The key to Chives' success over the years has been cooking with the use of local, in-season ingredients offering our twist on Canadian cuisine, creating menus using the best and the freshest from the farms and waters of Nova Scotia. Combining a relaxed atmosphere and attentive service both Haligonians and guests from afar love our bistro.
The main dining room balances a cozy and private mood, as does the Private Dining Room for larger groups, but for a special occasion, arrange for seating in the bank vault-turned-wine cellar.   • "My wife and I chose to dine here on our last night in Halifax, because we were dining with her family and were looking for more upscale options. We were excited to eat here, as we ate at their sister restaurant, Two Doors Down the previous night and were VERY impressed (casual, great food but no resos). We had a variety of entrees and a couple of appetizers. Everything was very tasty, and demonstrated excellent use of locally sourced ingredients. Menu options were a little predicatable, but would certainly appeal to the masses. My only criticism is the room itself, which appears to be an old bank, and doesn't set the mood. The decor seems dated, and better suited to a business lunch crowd. Overall, good, but head two doors down!"

  • "Everything we ordered was delicious - heritage tomato salad, salmon, lamb and panna cotta. The best meal we have had in our Canada travels. The noise level was acceptable, pleasant conversation but no loud music and extra noises (we look for this for our dining). Service was excellent, helpful, attentive, knowledgeable. Great recommendations from service. We selected this recommendation from Trip Advisor (also the employee at the Art Museum store- his favorite.)"

  • "Every person in our group of five said this was one of the best meals they had ever had...high praise indeed but well deserved. Two of us had the lamb, which literally fell apart when you stuck your fork into it and almost melted in your mouth. It was full of flavour and accompanied by a delicious Rosti. Two other had fish dishes and were equally impressed. The servers are friendly, knowledgeable and professional. Highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "We celebrated our anniversary at Chives and were very pleased with the overall experience. The food was fantastic. We ordered the "specials" and were thrilled with both the app and the main. Halibut with scallops over risotto with fresh veggies! How can you go wrong. The wait staff, Taralynn, was excellent. She knew her menu well and offered great ideas. She was engaging but not too much, so it added to a wonderful night. Definitely will go again."

We do a lot of eating at various restaurants and nothing compares to Chives. Our last experience at Chives we were a group of 8. Our waiter was very knowledgable regarding the menu and the food. With a group of 8, our appetizers and main courses were varied and everyone was extremely impressed with their decision. Looking forward to our next visit."

The lamb and beef entrees we had were superb. Halifax diners are really fortunate. This place would be rated number one in many larger cities if they were lucky enough to possess it. Service tops. The 25 minutes that my server made me wait to order these however, meant that I did none of these things, and instead left unsatisfied and unhappy. It wasn't that busy. Disappointing. Inexcusable."

We were lucky to sit in the vault, private room which I highly recommend. Every meal at chives is amazing - one of our favourite spots for a romantic meal."

  • "We use to enjoy driving from Moncton stay at a hotel near the waterfront in Halifax, take the ferry across to our favorite restaurant at LaPerla in Dartmouth then take the ferry back across to our hotel in Halifax. Unfortunately LaPerla restaurant closed in fall 2013 and we needed to search for another favorite restaurant. We may have found it. We really enjoyed our dining experience at Chives. Thankyou to the management, chef, and staff at Chives for making this dining experience most enjoyable for us."

There were plentiful portions because we could barely eat our whole meal. No dessert for sure! I enjoyed the quaint table by the window. It's less noisy on the upper part of the restaurant facing Barrington street The waiter was very friendly and accommodating as were all the staff. All in all, a very good dine!"

  • "We had one evening free in Halifax and chose Chives on the basis of online reviews. We were delighted. The service was friendly and prompt, the atmosphere cozy, and the food delicious. The salad of the day was, based on what was available fresh, was a lightly roasted tomato, served at room temperature stuffed with cucumbers, croutons, peppers and a light dressing. The seafood special was a perfect slab of salmon bedded on kale, accompanied by an orzo mac and cheese with lobster and a perfectly cooked asparagus. This is a popular, well appreciated spot so you'll want to make reservations ahead. Enjoy!"

  • "The food were carefully prepared. I ordered snow crab roll and belly pork for appetizer, soooooo good. My main course was special dish Duck Chest with rice. Amazingly done. Love the mixture of the two kinds of the small rice. Wish they keep this dish as a regular. The desserts looked beautiful and were delicious. Chocolate cake with Coconut lime ice cream on top, YUM!"

  • "everything perfect. lamb, fish...fresh and tasty, the texture is great worth to pay for, to dine for or die for.... there is only one thing, waiting toooooooo long between the appetizer and entree, don't know why, we reservation at 730, only about three other small table. 1 is enjoy the entree, 1 is waiting for food, 1 is just order before us. and the restaurant is not fully operate, it still take tooooo long to waiting. definitely come back again and again. but do not want wait about 30 mins (didn't really counting the time, but it feels must be long enough for me to walk 500 miles) waiting for food. Did you know the feel when you hungry and waiting for the food fallen from the haven? that is so painful."

  • "We waited quite a while before going to Chives because of the price and the requirement for reservations. Overall we were expecting more from this restaurant. Considering the cost the decor was underwhelming and the food was "just" good. We actually prefer their second restaurant (Two Doors Down) to this one. The braised beef was rather dry and was much better at Two Doors. The lamb was adequate but I found the risotto overpowering. The service was friendly and helpful."

While the restaurant would need a bit of an overhaul in terms of decor (it was a bit too dark in there, could be brightened up), the food was a-ma-zing! Everyone at our table loved what they ordered and the service was impeccable. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone and will to anyone I know who goes to Halifax!"

Overall, the quality of the ingredients and preparation was competent, skilled even, but the offerings were by no means unique or specific to the locale. One might have had this dinner of halibut and braised shank of lamb almost anywhere; indeed, we saw both dishes offered several times during our week's stay in the Maritime provinces. For us, the service, which was rushed and not particularly guiding, though we asked for suggestions, drug down the overall experience. We would not avoid or shun the restaurant on a return to Halifax, but we would not seek it out either. On balance, the restaurant offers credible cuisine and adequate service."
