Chives Canadian Bistro offers contemporary Canadian cuisine, in a unique casual atmosphere, in the heart of downtown Halifax. The key to Chives' success over the years has been cooking with the use of local, in-season ingredients offering our twist on Canadian cuisine, creating menus using the best and the freshest from the farms and waters of Nova Scotia. Combining a relaxed atmosphere and attentive service both Haligonians and guests from afar love our bistro.
The main dining room balances a cozy and private mood, as does the Private Dining Room for larger groups, but for a special occasion, arrange for seating in the bank vault-turned-wine cellar.   • "This visit to Chives was my third and will most likely have to be my last. The host did not appear very enthusiastic about his job. Our server was the same. Not exactly attentive, it felt like he was just going through the motions when taking our orders, explaining the specials and so on. The food was a major disappointment. For the entree I had the chicken dish, my friend the halibut with the paella, both were mediocre at best. Neither of us are particularly picky eaters and yet neither of us finished our entrees. My friend ordered dessert, the maple ice cream sundae and didn't finish even a quarter of it. It was mostly whipped cream. I want to love this restaurant but it fell well short of its reputation."

The food was delicious and they pay close attention to detail both in presentation, flavor, and use of local ingredients. The snow crab empanadas were delectable as well as the shrimp crusted salmon and chocolate mousse desert. A delightful place to dine. as a special note if you are looking for a romantic or more intimate dining experience request to dine in "The Vault" which once was an actual back vault. It's a private room for 2-4, great experience overall. Will return."

  • "Since we had kids we don't get out as much as we would like to but when we do...we tend to go to the top end spots in the city. This was our first time at Chive and while it was a good experience it wasn't great. We felt for an occasion like Valentines day they were understaffed. Our server was really good there just should have been 2 of him. We had 1 drink and didn't get an opportunity to order another. The appetizers we ordered were incredible. We could have stopped there they were so good. I ordered the Pork Tenderloin for my main course and I find it hard to eat. It had the texture of fat. For the price we paid I was really disappointed."

  • "This is my second time visiting Chives and it was still a WOW experience-The souffle could be a little more expansible but already successfully reduced the scent of goat cheese. The steak was perfectly medium-rare, and I like the garnish! The stunning poached-pear dessert-How did the chef make it taste so diversified? What is the secret ingredients, maybe red wine or vinegar? I give a four instead of five just because I prefer the old service mode."
