  • "Perfection in atmosphere, service, and food. A total gem. Thank you Chives for a great dining experience."

  • "Chives is without a doubt the best spot in Halifax, I would also expand that to the Maritimes. The food is amazing, and the service is like no other! We do a lot of eating at various restaurants and nothing compares to Chives. Our last experience at Chives we were a group of 8. Our waiter was very knowledgable regarding the menu and the food. With a group of 8, our appetizers and main courses were varied and everyone was extremely impressed with their decision. Looking forward to our next visit."

  • "An excellent dining experience on all counts. Food was of very high quality. The cheese/mushroom tartlet was one of the most delicious and satisfying starters I've ever tasted. The lamb and beef entrees we had were superb. Halifax diners are really fortunate. This place would be rated number one in many larger cities if they were lucky enough to possess it. Service tops. Small intimate atmosphere."

  • "Food always outstanding. Our favourite restaurant in metro. Maggie, our server is amazing! She enhances our visit each time we go and are lucky enough to be waited on by her."

  • "Everything fresh, tasty with attentive unobtrusive service. Great place to eat."

  • "The read good reviews on TripAdvisor and decided to give a try. Not impressed with the ambience. The food has excellent presentation and good fresh ingredients but that's it. Nothing else impressed us - average food with high price tag. Most likely we will not return."

  • "Unfortunate. Chives quality is always superb; I had an excellent meal, and was prepared to order another glass of wine, desert, and a cappuccino. I also would have tipped the usual 18-20%. The 25 minutes that my server made me wait to order these however, meant that I did none of these things, and instead left unsatisfied and unhappy. It wasn't that busy. Disappointing. Inexcusable."

  • "I ordered the haddock fillet over sweet pea purée with crab hollandaise. Husband ordered the short rib with scalloped potatoes Every bite melted in your mouth. We were lucky to sit in the vault, private room which I highly recommend. Every meal at chives is amazing - one of our favourite spots for a romantic meal."

  • "An old bank building with a vault inside that has been converted to a wine cellar. We had a romantic dinner inside the wine cellar! Wine pairing with each menu item was excellent. I would highly recommend the crab cakes and the mushroom tartlet."

  • "There were four of us in our group, we thoroughly enjoyed all three courses of the meal, including the cocktails. The waiter was very friendly and attentive to our needs. We heard from others about "Chives" on how good it was, and we definitely concur. We will be back."

  • "Chives was recommended by a friend that used to live in Halifax and it definitely didn't disappoint. Service is exceptional, food is fantastic and I'll definitely return if I'm back in town. We shared the halibut and the lamb. Finished off with strawberry cheesecake and espresso martinis. Everything was soooooo good!"

  • "Great dinner comprised of local ingredients and very friendly and knowledgeable wait staff. Seasonal menus. Would definitely return!"

  • "We use to enjoy driving from Moncton stay at a hotel near the waterfront in Halifax, take the ferry across to our favorite restaurant at LaPerla in Dartmouth then take the ferry back across to our hotel in Halifax. Unfortunately LaPerla restaurant closed in fall 2013 and we needed to search for another favorite restaurant. We may have found it. We really enjoyed our dining experience at Chives. Thankyou to the management, chef, and staff at Chives for making this dining experience most enjoyable for us."

  • "At the end of a 2 week driving trip through the Maritimes, I returned to Halifax and had the best meal of the trip here. The pesto crusted cod was perfect in every way: visually stunning, perfectly cooked, wonderful tastes and textures. Eat here, you won't be sorry."

  • "This highly-recommended place deserves its reputation. Outstanding food in a casual setting. Attentive and informed service. Only wish that the portions were smaller so I'd have room for dessert."
    Dined on 7/26/2014
  • "The food was delicious! We thoroughly enjoyed the beef tenderloin dish and seafood chowder. The smoky flavour of the chowder was unique. There were plentiful portions because we could barely eat our whole meal. No dessert for sure! I enjoyed the quaint table by the window. It's less noisy on the upper part of the restaurant facing Barrington street The waiter was very friendly and accommodating as were all the staff. All in all, a very good dine!"

  • "Chives is a gem of a Canadian bistro! We have been three times now, and love it every time. GREAT food; some of the best! The service is excellent, and knowledgeable staff on the menu. We would recommend this to anyone visiting Halifax! We'll be back for sure!"

  • "We had one evening free in Halifax and chose Chives on the basis of online reviews. We were delighted. The service was friendly and prompt, the atmosphere cozy, and the food delicious. The salad of the day was, based on what was available fresh, was a lightly roasted tomato, served at room temperature stuffed with cucumbers, croutons, peppers and a light dressing. The seafood special was a perfect slab of salmon bedded on kale, accompanied by an orzo mac and cheese with lobster and a perfectly cooked asparagus. This is a popular, well appreciated spot so you'll want to make reservations ahead. Enjoy!"

  • "Very nice restaurant, but the rave reviews ranking it number one must be people who have only dined in Halifax. The wine list is sorely lacking unless you are a big fan of Nova Scotia wines. Wine by the glass very limited. Food was very good, but not truly wonderful."
    Dined on 7/22/2014
  • "Our experience was absolutely wonderful. The kale salad was to die for!! My husbands chowder was good but he found it a little thin as he likes a thicker broth. He really enjoyed it so it was all good. The steak was absolutely wonderful!!! We were too full for dessert. The service was amazing. We will definitely be back! We can't wait!"

  • "Incredible experience! The tenderloin was out of this world. Best food in the city!"

  • "Great restaurant in downtown Halifax. Our waiter was excellent and all his recommendations were great. I would not order an appetizer if you want dessert as portions are generous."

  • "Lovely ambiance, relaxed yet elegant dining. Service and food were exceptional."

  • "We were visiting Halifax and friend suggested chives. Really very nice and pleasant atmosphere. Staff very eager to please. Food good nice presentation. Good time!!"

  • "The food were carefully prepared. I ordered snow crab roll and belly pork for appetizer, soooooo good. My main course was special dish Duck Chest with rice. Amazingly done. Love the mixture of the two kinds of the small rice. Wish they keep this dish as a regular. The desserts looked beautiful and were delicious. Chocolate cake with Coconut lime ice cream on top, YUM!"

  • "everything perfect. lamb, fish...fresh and tasty, the texture is great worth to pay for, to dine for or die for.... there is only one thing, waiting toooooooo long between the appetizer and entree, don't know why, we reservation at 730, only about three other small table. 1 is enjoy the entree, 1 is waiting for food, 1 is just order before us. and the restaurant is not fully operate, it still take tooooo long to waiting. definitely come back again and again. but do not want wait about 30 mins (didn't really counting the time, but it feels must be long enough for me to walk 500 miles) waiting for food. Did you know the feel when you hungry and waiting for the food fallen from the haven? that is so painful."

  • "In the last little while we have gone here to celebrate family mile stone events. The 20 something children enjoy this as well as the parents. The food is consistently good without being the same. We like the choices of things we may not prepare at home. Always a good opportunity to try something new and of course local."

  • "Never had a bad meal at chives. Every time we have gone the menu changed so always something new to try."

  • "We waited quite a while before going to Chives because of the price and the requirement for reservations. Overall we were expecting more from this restaurant. Considering the cost the decor was underwhelming and the food was "just" good. We actually prefer their second restaurant (Two Doors Down) to this one. The braised beef was rather dry and was much better at Two Doors. The lamb was adequate but I found the risotto overpowering. The service was friendly and helpful."

  • "This was our discovery of our stay in Halifax. I'd read reviews and we were not disappointed. While the restaurant would need a bit of an overhaul in terms of decor (it was a bit too dark in there, could be brightened up), the food was a-ma-zing! Everyone at our table loved what they ordered and the service was impeccable. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone and will to anyone I know who goes to Halifax!"

  • "The dishes we ordered were well prepared and as described in the menu and by the server. Overall, the quality of the ingredients and preparation was competent, skilled even, but the offerings were by no means unique or specific to the locale. One might have had this dinner of halibut and braised shank of lamb almost anywhere; indeed, we saw both dishes offered several times during our week's stay in the Maritime provinces. For us, the service, which was rushed and not particularly guiding, though we asked for suggestions, drug down the overall experience. We would not avoid or shun the restaurant on a return to Halifax, but we would not seek it out either. On balance, the restaurant offers credible cuisine and adequate service."

  • "We started with the mushroom tartlet and the seafood chowder. The tartlet was very tasty while the seafood chowder was not to my liking. Our mains were the porchetta and the pei beef 2 ways. Both were very good. The strawberry shortcake for desert was awesome. We will definitely go back"

  • "I chose this Bistro for my partner who was visiting for a week. We arrived and were as if transported. Our server Tirna/Tiernen was as if from Tinra Nog, land of Myth and Mystery. Our food arrived and was stellar. My Cheese Tart with sautéed mushrooms and heavenly leeks, resting upon melted Gouda cheese was as conjuring the Goddesses; was almost beyond humanly delicious. And the crust, Divine. The Market Salad with strawberries sumptuous. To have access to fresh, hot, delicious decaffeinated espresso with which to accompany my Liqueur, was a rare treat. As we walked the day after we ran into tourists on Barrington, who asked about places to eat, without hesitation we said, "Chives.""

  • "Our evening at Chives was well beyond all our expectations. The food was spectacular, the service was impeccable, the staff were extremely hospitable. In every possible way, we loved it. The biscuits at the beginning were to die for. We shared the Snowcrab Spring Rolls with Pork Belly with Hoisin sauce, the Chicken Breast with Pasta Carbonara, and the Pan Seared Halibut, and finished with the Lemon White Chocolate Mousse. We gave four and five stars to every dish. Can't wait to return!"

  • "This was a great restaurant. The restaurant is very new looking and with a modern décor. The staff were friendly, efficient and explained that they worked a team approach where we would likely see them all during the evening (which we did). I had both the appetizer and main course specials. First came the seafood chowder with the chive oil – the hint of pepper was nice; it was very rich with lots of layers of flavour. Then came the halibut – good sear though not great - but the risotto was fabulous. My wife went for the a la carte dishes of crusted cod served with quinoa; before that she had an amazing lobster gnudi a la king with the gnudi being pan roasted."

  • "Myself and a friend of mine went to Chives on a random Wednesday night and had an amazing time! The service was easily the best that I have ever had in Halifax. Our server was very friendly, helpful, and patient and the food was outstanding. I will definitley go back."

  • "I dropped my wife at the door and she was immediately seated and brought water while she waited for me to park. When I arrived the waitress brought over two glasses of Prosecco on the house and congratulated us on our anniversary. The specials were explained in great detail and we ordered. A minute or two later, our waitress was back with warm buttermilk biscuits that are to die for. Each course that was brought out was a work of art and tasted even better. The focus on local and seasonal foods was obvious and the results outstanding. The duck special and spring lamb chops were done to perfection. This was our first time here, but absolutely will not be our last time. Love this place."

  • "Visiting Halifax for the first time and dine at Chives Canadian Bistro for dinner. Food was fantastic, the seafood chowder was the best we ever had, nice base with plenty of seafood. Main courses, duck and halibut were cooked perfectly. Great wine list and service was outstanding, would highly recommend this restaurant. Casual atmosphere with great food."

  • "Noisy restaurant to the point of being difficult to carry on a conversation, detracted from experience. Effort by wait staff to describe menu was intrusive and a bit annoying. Cheese plate appetizer was excellent, chicken was very good, Halibut was too salty, wine was overpriced, 16.50 for 9 Oz of Napa Valley Cab is not good value. I wouldn't go again."
    Dined on 6/19/2014
  • "The food and service at this restaurant fell into the very good category for us. The biscuits served before the main entrees were excellent as was the seafood chowder. The lamb dish was also in the excellent category, tender and very flavorful. On the other hand the duck breast, while flavorful was quite tough. Service started out very attentive but soon the restaurant filled and the server was not able to check back as he should have so there were long waits toward the end of the meal to get the bill and to pay. All in all a 4. We would return though."
