We last ate at this wonderful Halifax restaurant about 10 years ago and it really lived up to our memories when we had a change to visit again. We both had the excellent seafood chowder with biscuits. The fish and seafood main dishes were attractive and delicious. A highlight was the spicy rice pudding with pistachios and almonds which reminded us of an Indian rice pudding. We also got to take home 2 cookbooks from Chives so can work on recreating similar meals at home!

We asked for a quiet table and were given a fantastic one: the vault of that ex-bank that also serves as a wine cellar. The service was attentive and professional. The charcuterie was a disappointment with chicken liver pate pompously been given the name of foie-gras. The lamb shank was enormous and excellent. The cod was well prepared but the tomato sauce too dominant. The tenderloin was very good and we were given the "medium-rare" that we asked.

I took my husband to Chives to celebrate his 40th birthday. We've been wanting to go to Chives for many years, and were hoping for great things. For the most part, we were not disappointed. The server was friendly and informative, the atmosphere was perfect for a special occasion, and the food was very good. The one thing that was slightly disappointing was my side serving of potatoes was luke warm.....I'm pretty sure this was linked to the fact (as conveyed by our server) that there was a table of 13 that was ahead of us. I didn't like them that temperature - but my husband ate them up. I would highly recommend CHives to a friend if asked.

We all very much enjoyed our pre-theatre dinner. All courses were perfect. Our only negative is that we thought the menu was a bit pricey - $49 for the rack of lamb for example - however it was very tasty and nicely presented!

I have dined here at least five times, and every time the food has been outstanding. The menu is so good despite being a small one, that every dish that I have tried has been absolutely delightful. Of mention, the seafood chowder is hands down the best chowder I have ever tried in my life. There is a smokiness that emanates from the chowder which finishes with a small hint of truffle oil - I am already hungry for it again!

Our table location felt a bit warehouse-y, being on a bench row along a whole wall. Since, for us, this was a special occasion meal outside of our regular budget, we would have preferred more of a "nook" feel, which I think some other tables had. I love the local and seasonal food aspect of the menu, and the food was delicious and unique.

Having asked for a private table, we were shown to the one table in "the vault" (their wine cellar); it was the perfect table for a quiet getaway from reality! Our cheerful server produced an expertly baked buttermilk biscuit; served with molasses and whipped butter; it teased the taste buds. The corn and ham chowder with crab cake was nicely seasoned and portioned well. The main of lamb shoulder with fresh veg and garlic whipped potatoes, served with a deep lamb flavored mint Au jus, was tender and succulent! To finish, a cup of dark roast coffee and a moist earthy flavored molasses ginger cake, topped with whipped cream and candied ginger, was a perfect conclusion! I would definitely recommend this place as an occasional treat!

We were advised by a friend to try Chives and could not have been more pleased with the experience. The service was above and beyond what most restaurants would provide. The knowledgeable server was very helpful with the wine list and menu items and the food was very good. The desert item that we tried was amazing. I thought that the cost was very good value for the meal that we received.

My wife and I have been to Chives twice now and it's been a very enjoyable experience both times. The staff are great; very attentive to your needs with just the right presence. The menu is not extensive but what is there is very very good. Add one of us is gluten free, it's refreshing to find a restaurant that not only offers gluten free options, but in some cases, the GFO surpasses the flavor of the regular option.

My wife and I were here for our third visit and it was as excellent as ever!! This restaurant takes advantage of local Ly produced food and also has wine pairing suggestions to go with each dish. The specials were also excellent. They tell you the price of the specials with each dish which was nice. Waiter knew every dish and ingredient well and you could tell they love the food. Service was impeccable. Only negative comment is that the tables are a bit close together and we could hear every word of the table next to us and vice versa. Will definitely come back. Try the crab cake appetizer and the lamb dish. Superb!!

The food was wonderful, beautifully prepared and presented. Interesting flavors and great tasting experiences ..... but the quantity. Too much, over filled plates, like a wonderful experience that could not end so becomes less wonderful. We had the tartlet first which was just right and a wonderful taste combination. Then the cod and tenderloin, both large plates with masses of vegetables and other flavors. There could have been half the amount of vegetables and less tenderloin and it would have been still a great experience. Prices were comparable for that level of dining so not too cheap. Still a good experience.

My husband and I had a wonderful dinning experience at chive. We had a salad to start. Me, warm kale salad, it was delicious. My husband the summer salad which he also said was tasty. We shared the smoked potatoes chowder and it was one of the Best chowders I've had. Great smoky flavor and tons of chunks of halibut , lobster , scallops. It was device. For our dinner I had the lamb and my husband the tenderloin. Both meats were tender and flavorful. The dishes were accompanied with a good amount of green veg fresh from the market. I had peas which was a refreshing change then the standard carot or cauliflower. Both dishes were a more then satisfying portion. So much that we couldn't even be tempted for dessert. Absolutely wonderful food!

My son recommended Chives - he does have good taste. The overall experience was very good. The server picked up on our 'situation' (dropping a son off at first year university) and catered perfectly to our needs. We both enjoyed the lamb very much. The sides were as meticulously prepared as the meat. In fact, for me, this was the highlight of the meal. I found the lamb to be more rare (than the advertised medium-rare) - something you may wish to check when ordering if it would be an issue for you ( it wasn't for us). The wine suggestion was 'spot on'. I'll return and recommend Chives to others.

My wife and I chose to dine here on our last night in Halifax, because we were dining with her family and were looking for more upscale options. We were excited to eat here, as we ate at their sister restaurant, Two Doors Down the previous night and were VERY impressed (casual, great food but no resos). We had a variety of entrees and a couple of appetizers. Everything was very tasty, and demonstrated excellent use of locally sourced ingredients. Menu options were a little predicatable, but would certainly appeal to the masses. My only criticism is the room itself, which appears to be an old bank, and doesn't set the mood. The decor seems dated, and better suited to a business lunch crowd. Overall, good, but head two doors down!

Everything we ordered was delicious - heritage tomato salad, salmon, lamb and panna cotta. The best meal we have had in our Canada travels. The noise level was acceptable, pleasant conversation but no loud music and extra noises (we look for this for our dining). Service was excellent, helpful, attentive, knowledgeable. Great recommendations from service. We selected this recommendation from Trip Advisor (also the employee at the Art Museum store- his favorite.)

Every person in our group of five said this was one of the best meals they had ever had...high praise indeed but well deserved. Two of us had the lamb, which literally fell apart when you stuck your fork into it and almost melted in your mouth. It was full of flavour and accompanied by a delicious Rosti. Two other had fish dishes and were equally impressed. The servers are friendly, knowledgeable and professional. Highly recommend this restaurant.

We celebrated our anniversary at Chives and were very pleased with the overall experience. The food was fantastic. We ordered the "specials" and were thrilled with both the app and the main. Halibut with scallops over risotto with fresh veggies! How can you go wrong. The wait staff, Taralynn, was excellent. She knew her menu well and offered great ideas. She was engaging but not too much, so it added to a wonderful night. Definitely will go again.

Chives is without a doubt the best spot in Halifax, I would also expand that to the Maritimes. The food is amazing, and the service is like no other! We do a lot of eating at various restaurants and nothing compares to Chives. Our last experience at Chives we were a group of 8. Our waiter was very knowledgable regarding the menu and the food. With a group of 8, our appetizers and main courses were varied and everyone was extremely impressed with their decision. Looking forward to our next visit.

An excellent dining experience on all counts. Food was of very high quality. The cheese/mushroom tartlet was one of the most delicious and satisfying starters I've ever tasted. The lamb and beef entrees we had were superb. Halifax diners are really fortunate. This place would be rated number one in many larger cities if they were lucky enough to possess it. Service tops.
