Diner Reviews
  • "Food and service were great. Somewhat lacking in ambience. Needs some outdoor signage. For a restaurant with somewhat expensive dining, might be a little easier to identify. Wasn't impressed with the "thank you" plastic bags we were given for our leftovers."

  • "Most delicious, creative food in Los Angeles. Staff is experienced and very gracious."

  • "What can I say? the food is sublime and the service, outstanding. I bought a glass of wine that did not taste the way it should have, just to give you an example of Chinois, the waiter cordially selected several bottles for me to try..he earnestly wanted me to be satisfied, which I was quickly."

  • "Excellent restaurant every time we visit. Staff is high end. Food is pricey but well worth it. You get what you pay for. We love it"

  • "Dined there many times since it opened in 1984 but had not been there for a while. Still one of the best restaurants in the world. I need to go more often."

  • "I checked out this place on a whim and didn't have very high expectations. I must say that I was absolutely shocked at how amazing the food was, definitely would recommend it for any special occasion."

  • "Who would expect a restaurant to have the same fine quality after 15 years? Chinois does. Not even the interior design has changed. I'm glad they never expanded the space. Probably too closely tabled for an intimate heart-to-heart conversation or a business meeting, but great for any other dining out experience."

  • "I've been dining here since they opened in 1984 and it's always a treat. I never tire of the chinois chicken salad. This time we had the scallops. It's always great food & efficient service I love dining there late when it quiets down a little"

  • "Restaurant does not appear to be clean(food stains on pillar next to our table). Duck was overcooked and hard, served with an unpleasant sauce. Server was pleasant and accommodating. Food experience surprised our group because we have had a number of excellent dinners here."

  • "This is the second time at Chinois. I came back because it was good the first time but was extremely disappointed with this meal there was too much deep fried food (Crispy Quail was one) and the sauces were overpowering (lamb and quail). Service was a little stuck up but this may have been what they were trying to achieve."

  • "Had the soft shell crab, the short ribs, tempura tuna (at waiter's recommendation) and the fried spinach (that was my favorite). Had two desserts--creme brule (?) and some foamy, citrus thing that didn't win me over, but as the waiter put it, it's something I wouldn't make at home. Each of us had two glasses of wine. PRICEY. Was over $225."

  • "Such great food. Excellent Service. Did I mention that the food is amazing?!! The lobster is a must, and don't overlook the mushrooms, just because they are a side dish. Order them--- they are fantastic!"

  • "We had our anniversary dinner here and it was fabulous as always. I had the Miso Black Cod and it was one of the best I've ever had. We were very full so we turned down desert and they brought us a little treat on the house, very sweet. Our server Hector was also the kindest man and very on top of everything."

  • "Without a doubt, the best restaurant in Los Angeles. Best in food, best in service."

  • "The food, cocktails and desserts were spot on. We were visiting from out of town and our dinner there was a highlight. They could improve their gluten free menu presentation. My husband has celiac and cannot eat gluten. They gave him a menu that was marked up by hand with a pen with notes and checkmarks that were a bit confusing. The marked up menu looked a little hacked together. Even just printing a separate GF menu from the computer onto normal paper would have looked more professional and like they took some time to think it through rather than marking up a menu by hand. Just my 2 cents. "

  • "The food, esp the Shanghai Lobster was delicious. The ambiance is ok, its stuck in the 1990's, service was good."

  • "The food and the hosts were amazing. However, we got more personality from the "bus boy" than our waiter. Once you understand how the menu works, and get familiar with their food, you can have a wonderful spot to go to for nearly any occasion. It's elegant yet no pressure to be anything but relaxed. We live in the neighborhood and plan to try everything on the menu. With a little more help for the first-time customers, it could be an amazing experience. Excellent, elegant food choices, beautiful ambience, right in the heart of Main Street in Santa Monica... can't beat it. It stars buzzing right at 6pm. Very fun."

  • "The food and service continues to be fantastic. Even after years its still stands as one of the best dining experiences in L A."
    Dined on 4/11/2014
  • "The food quality is average and they try to disguise it by adding heavy thick sauces, not delicate at all."
    Dined on 4/4/2014
  • "We have been going to Chinois for over 25 years. We have always had great food. In fact we would rave about it to friends. This night the food was mediocre at best. The short ribs were fatty and gristly. The waiter took it back. The duck was quite bland as was the catfish. Lobster rolls were great. we took guest from out of town and we were embarrassed. The service was fine but not the food. I can only hope that this was an off night and not a sign that the restaurant is going down hill. Since it is in our neighborhood, we will try it again to see."

  • "Wolfgang Puck's breakthrough, Asian fusion sensation of the 80s is now a venerable culinary institution. More than three decades after its revolutionary opening, Chinois is still turning out great food and delivering a memorable dining experience that feels totally current. The bigger the group the better, as it increases the number of the creative dishes that you can sample."

  • "Chinois was a bit of a surprise. The food was ok. Actually the miso cod was outstanding. The pork belly was flavorless and had no resemblance to any sort of traditional Chinese pork belly. It was beyond "fusion". The ambience was disappointing. Cheap tables and a tiki look. Really? The extracurricular "romantic encounters" at the bar were comical but not what I expected from a high end restaurant. It looked a little too organized to be random... The service was excellent but as you can tell, overall our experience was not very good. After going to the downtown Chaya last weekend, Chinois was a huge disappointment."

  • "The prices are slightly outrageous however the food is amazing and the service was fantastic."

  • "This restaurant has seen better days. Though the service was good, the overall experience was terrible. The food was just okay and certainly not worth the price. Everything we ordered was greasy and sub-par tasting. The decor is super dated and everything just looked like it could use a facelift. I will not be going back."

  • "Great for family meals. Works for "foodie" adults as well. Brought some of the nieces and nephews after Le Cirque. For some, their first "foodie" experience. Always great though they do tend to over salt some of the meat dishes."
