Diner Reviews
  • "The food, cocktails and desserts were spot on. We were visiting from out of town and our dinner there was a highlight. They could improve their gluten free menu presentation. My husband has celiac and cannot eat gluten. They gave him a menu that was marked up by hand with a pen with notes and checkmarks that were a bit confusing. The marked up menu looked a little hacked together. Even just printing a separate GF menu from the computer onto normal paper would have looked more professional and like they took some time to think it through rather than marking up a menu by hand. Just my 2 cents. "

  • "The food, esp the Shanghai Lobster was delicious. The ambiance is ok, its stuck in the 1990's, service was good."

  • "The food and the hosts were amazing. However, we got more personality from the "bus boy" than our waiter. Once you understand how the menu works, and get familiar with their food, you can have a wonderful spot to go to for nearly any occasion. It's elegant yet no pressure to be anything but relaxed. We live in the neighborhood and plan to try everything on the menu. With a little more help for the first-time customers, it could be an amazing experience. Excellent, elegant food choices, beautiful ambience, right in the heart of Main Street in Santa Monica... can't beat it. It stars buzzing right at 6pm. Very fun."

  • "The food and service continues to be fantastic. Even after years its still stands as one of the best dining experiences in L A."

  • "The food quality is average and they try to disguise it by adding heavy thick sauces, not delicate at all."

  • "We have been going to Chinois for over 25 years. We have always had great food. In fact we would rave about it to friends. This night the food was mediocre at best. The short ribs were fatty and gristly. The waiter took it back. The duck was quite bland as was the catfish. Lobster rolls were great. we took guest from out of town and we were embarrassed. The service was fine but not the food. I can only hope that this was an off night and not a sign that the restaurant is going down hill. Since it is in our neighborhood, we will try it again to see."

  • "A place that I stop in every time I am in L.A. The food and staff are amazing. Mr. Puck, congratulations for keeping staff for so many years."

  • "Wolfgang Puck's breakthrough, Asian fusion sensation of the 80s is now a venerable culinary institution. More than three decades after its revolutionary opening, Chinois is still turning out great food and delivering a memorable dining experience that feels totally current. The bigger the group the better, as it increases the number of the creative dishes that you can sample."

  • "Chinois was a bit of a surprise. The food was ok. Actually the miso cod was outstanding. The pork belly was flavorless and had no resemblance to any sort of traditional Chinese pork belly. It was beyond "fusion". The ambience was disappointing. Cheap tables and a tiki look. Really? The extracurricular "romantic encounters" at the bar were comical but not what I expected from a high end restaurant. It looked a little too organized to be random... The service was excellent but as you can tell, overall our experience was not very good. After going to the downtown Chaya last weekend, Chinois was a huge disappointment."

  • "The prices are slightly outrageous however the food is amazing and the service was fantastic."

  • "This restaurant has seen better days. Though the service was good, the overall experience was terrible. The food was just okay and certainly not worth the price. Everything we ordered was greasy and sub-par tasting. The decor is super dated and everything just looked like it could use a facelift. I will not be going back."

  • "Great for family meals. Works for "foodie" adults as well. Brought some of the nieces and nephews after Le Cirque. For some, their first "foodie" experience. Always great though they do tend to over salt some of the meat dishes."

  • "I found this place last May and drive over an hour in traffic to eat there once a month. The food is amazing and price is fair for the high quality of food."

  • "My husband and I had not been to Chinois for at least a decade. The tempura ahi with uni sauce was as fabulous as I remembered it. And the rest of the meal matched that level of scrumptiousness. Our waiter was wonderful - welcoming and helpful without being intrusive. And Wolfgang Puck himself made his way around the restaurant to warmly greet his guests and give the experience a personal touch (as well as the fun of meeting a celebrity). The restaurant is small, so the tables are packed in, and it can be a little noisy. However, we did not feel like it was too crowded. All in all, a superb restaurant experience."

  • "I had wanted to visit this iconic restaurant, but being in Pasadena it it too far to travel. So the Cirque tickets at Santa Monica provided the perfect opportunity. The appetizer - their reinterpretation of Peking duck - was very good - specially the dark brown sauce. My lamb chops with cilantro sauce was OK - I liked the salty crust on the chops, the cilantro sauce was nothing special, though I liked the potatoes that came with it. My wife's Sichuan beef was the best dish. Great sauce. Our banana cream pie dessert was also quite good. For a not very crowded Sunday night dinner at 7:30pm, service was quite poor."

  • "Chinois on Main is a restaurant that never disappoints in that all of its food is great and has been for many years. I recommend or special occasion because its special."

  • "Well maintained and interesting environment with friendly, helpful servers. The glaring reality is that the flavors, sauces or anything to make these dishes a "must return" is sadly lacking. Good but not remotely memorable....shame! Expensive for what you experience."

  • "Chinois never ceases to amaze myself, or my guests. Their Shanghai Lobster, and Lamb Chops are two of the best dishes I have had anywhere. Bella, the owner / manager, takes care of her guests with a first rate group of long term servers. The wine list is also opt notch. One of the best restaurants for foodies there is."

  • "My wife and I visited for the first time this past Saturday night. We couldn't have asked for a better dinner. We were treated like gold even when we had to wait. Our host Jason comped us a couple drinks while we waited only for 15 minutes. When we were seated our server was very attentive and helpful. When our dinners came we couldn't have been more pleased. My wife had the Tuna appetizer and scallops for her main course. She claimed they were the best she's ever tried. When she's that happy it tends to make my life a lot more enjoyable. Fantastic evening all around."

  • "My wife and I have been coming to Chinois for many years; it has always been on a short list of favorites. We looked forward to our evening here, our last time at Chinois was about six months ago. The service was excellent, nothing but high praise. We ordered the appetizer special of lobster rolls, for entrees the duck with plum sauce and the lamb chops. The food left us somewhat disappointed. We found that while the food was good, it wasn't great. One expects something more world-class, food done to higher standards--not so much just a local 'decent restaurant' level of food. My wife described the food as tired old fashioned recipes."

  • "To put it bluntly, Puck is definitely not in the building. -I had crispy seared ahi with an uni sauce, crispy spinach and duck. The ahi was beautifully plated but somewhat flavorless in grade. The sauce was tasty though. The meal became less impressive as it progressed. The crispy spinach arrived at least five minutes before the main course, , deep fried in oil that wasn't hot enough to crisp the leaves without absorbing god knows how much oil. The result was a mouthful of fat without something substantial to hold up to the heaviness. The duck was mushy and the legs cooked way past crisp. The waiter didn't seem to notice the entire plate of spinach mounded high when she cleared the table--usually an inquiry is in order...I won't be back."

  • "... why bother? Some call it 'dated,' others say in need of a revamp... but the food here is undeniable. I took my daughter using a GILT City coupon and the value we got for the money was nothing short of spectacualr - we both took more food than we could eat home - and it was ALL delicious. Three cheers for a Santa Monica/Venice classic!!!!"

  • "Was hesitant about a "standard" salad, but, WOW! Flavors are incredible - lightly dressed with a unique creamy dressing with a smoky element from the sesame flavors - so wonderful!. I could eat it salad every day. Other food was also good - duck crepes, lobster curry (regarding reviews that it's mushy: it has sticky rice topped with sauce, so you anticipate the texture; lobster is succulent and cooked perfectly and not overpowered by the curry). Sides of veggie fried rice/haricots verts not particularly noteworthy. Overall most things were spicy (and I typically don't notice spiciness). The flourless chocolate cake was fantastic. Nice wine list, Wolfgang's culinary expertise, and cute , casual atmosphere make this a good spot!"

  • "The salad was great, the service exceptional, the "by the glass" Pinot Noir great. Restaurant almost empty, nothing flashy about it. Won't go back again."

  • "Chinois is one of my favorite restaurants. Food is consistently great as is the service. It was crowded when we went because of Dine LA. We didn't order off that menu because we have our favorites like the catfish and the tempura ahi. Host is very friendly and efficient."

  • "have been going since they opened and this is my mothers favorite restaurant. attentive service, terrific food, and great front. the noise level is always to loud and has been from the start...were there the night before chinese new years and was very festive (they should keep the decorations up)...restaurant was jammed but they did not miss a beat...a classic...and you must have the chinese chicken salad...still wonderful after all these years"

  • "I haven't been to Chinois in about 20 years. I was working in the area and decided to try lunch for dinela week. The decor is very dated and the restaurant is cold and drafty with all tile work. The restaurant needs to be remodeled. The food was okay - but dated as well. The tuna appetizer was a disappointment. Seared tuna slices in a boring sauce sitting on what seemed to be mostly chopped onions of various types. The pork was good - but too heavily sauced. Dessert was okay, a molten chocolate type dessert - but again boring and dated. My sense is they don't want to spend the money to update it so keep it as is."

  • "Fun, and still crowded after all these years, but the food has lost a lot of its lightness and finesse that made the place so outstanding. Classic dishes like the lamb in raddichio and the crispy catfish seem more leaden and heavy."

  • "Chinois is not the best Chinese restaurant you'll ever visit, but it has some excellent dishes. The service and presentation are first rate. The self-parking is a hassle and the valet parking is pricy. But all in all, a solid choice."
