Diner Reviews
  • "An extensive menu and decent wine list. While a little out of the ordinary, I recommend the octopus salad and zip de pesca."

  • "Food is very good and the atmosphere is big city and so is the location. Wait staff leaves a little to be desired and the bartender is not good."

  • "You can make a meal out of sides and appetizers. The atmosphere is very conducive to conversation. Its located in a fun part of the city. Outdoor is great for people watching."

  • "We went for lunch and the place was pretty calm and felt like this is not a place for casual dining, its the place for something formal special occasions. I am a vegetarian and one of my colleague was also vegetarian, both our dishes were good but not delicious"

  • "Dined at Chinato for the first time and were absolutely delighted. Our group of 3 was celebrating a birthday and the staff acknowledged that upon arrival. Service was attentive, not obtrusive and Steven, our waiter, was very knowledgeable about the food and the wines. The trouble with a Bruell restaurant is that there are so many wonderful choices. You (we) really cannot visit only once. Chinato's menu beckons us to return and we will. If you'd like to really treat yourself, allow your server to choose your meal. I do this often and did so at Chinato. Duck confit ravioli for an app and a beautiful fish entrée paired well with the wine we selected."

  • "Everything about our experience was great! Our server was wonderful, the food arrived quick and was very good. The only draw back was probably the fact that the bathrooms were in the basement."

  • "Chinato, to me is a very pleasant surprise. You get well-prepared, imaginative dishes, generous proportions at a very reasonable prices. Most restaurants with a menu of this quality like to jack up the prices, while decreasing the portions. Also, at restaurants of this quality, oftentimes, the staff seems to feel they are above the customers and are doing you a favor by waiting on you. Definitely not the case here."

  • "Based on this experience alone, I would not recommend Chinato. But my previous experience tells me that this mediocre lunch was an outlier."

  • "We enjoyed taking another couple out for what we considered an upscale dinner. Everything we ordered was delicious, and the service was great (the server was patient and knowledgeable)."

  • "I haven't been to Chinato for a while, mostly because of the parking situation downtown (I did pay $18.00 to valet). THe service was supurb; our waitress was very knowledgable about the menu and wine choices and our gluten free member was offerred gluten free bread. We had 5 members to our party, one was gluten free and another was a vegetarian; we all had multiple choices on the menu and our food was wonderful. Not one of us had the same thing and all had very good meals. From the scallops to the beef in amarone to pappardelle with creamed calliflower; all was delicious. The prices are not bad either. I will be back soon."

  • "Our food was very good. Loved the fact that you can order half portions. Our waitress was very helpful with deciding what to order. We where also there the week before at a private party. Would highly recommend there downstairs room if you needed to hold an intimate larger size gathering."

  • "We had this on our list of restaurants that could do no wrong. Unfortunately, we went 4/4 for unsatisfied meals. The veal, lamb, skate, and scallops were what we ordered and did not rise to the level we expected."

  • "Chinato was a perfect date night for my husband and I. Their menu has a great variety of Italian dishes. I'm a vegetarian and my husband is far from it, but we both had plenty of options!"

  • "The food was very flavorful, but I think the swordfish was a little too rich, and salty."

  • "great food, but service was a bit slow. getting our entrees took much longer than it should have when we had an 8:00 show. A little too loud for comfortable table conversation"

  • "First off, we have been to most of Bruell's restaurants and were looking forward to Chinato. Things started off well and were seated at a great table right away. After 15 minutes of waiting for someone to come take a drink order I got up and complained. The Manager was very professional and comped our drinks. We ordered 3 dishes and all were Ok to poor. The Lamb dish was a disaster. Braised lamb was watery and lacked flavor. Again, the manager took it off the tab. I very much would rather pay top $$ for great food and service than get comped for stuff."

  • "Chinato is one of my favorite restaurants in Cleveland. The food is consistently interesting and delicious. The burratta was especially outstanding on a recent night. The atmosphere is comfortable and appealing. Definitely recommend it."

  • "While the main dishes we ordered weren't as delicious as we were hoping for, the amount of attention the restaurant paid to our needs was incredible. They ensured that the dishes were gluten free and they listened very well to our desires. We tried dishes that we weren't sure of in effort of being adventurous, but they didn't mix with our tastes as well as we hoped. I think I will go with a more traditional Italian dish the next time I dine here. The Salumi appetizer was outstanding! Great amount of meat and what a variety! Being able to see East 4th Street was great scenery! Love to see Cleveland is bustling in the summer!"

  • "Fantastic authentic italian cousine. Had a very successful business lunch. Wait staff were friendly, but not necessarily dressed right for the lunch business crowd. Not perfect service, but definitely better than most."

  • "Very enjoyable evening. I am not much of an Italian wine drinker, but the recommendations were very good and went well with all choices - Brunello. Everyone liked their meals and they were of various sizes of small to large - scallops to balck cod to chicken leg saltimbucco. The ragu pasta dish (half order) was a little watery from the pasta water. My guests liked the desserts."

  • "Had an excellent meal with great service at my latest visit to Chinato. Two of my companions had never dined at Chinato and were very impressed with the food and service."

  • "Had the tuna appetizer for like 14.00. Smallest portion of tuna I have seen almost needed a magnifying glass to see it. Fish entry and risotto were very good."

  • "Seated promptly was the highlight of our dining experience. After placing our original drink order, it took over 30 minutes to place our food order. I found myself watching the time as we had tickets to a show. I planned a 2 1/2 hour dinner buffer, but we unfortunately cut it close. Our server(s) repeatedly forgot everything; bread, butter, refill on wine, beer, taking our order. Only went to Chinato because there was an open table during prime time at the last minute. Would never go there again, and I would not recommend it. The food, though decent, did not make up for the disappointing service. Lastly, the flow of the restaurant was bad. Small walkways, servers and patrons constantly vying for room to get by the table arrangements."

  • "Such a fabulous menu and everything is even better than it sounds. I went with a group of friends and everyone tried something different. From the specials to the regular menu, there is something for everyone, and it all tastes wonderful. The temptation to try something new is incredibly rewarding - you will not leave disappointed. It was, in a word, amazing!"

  • "Chinato is one of my favorites restaurants and although the price point is a bit high, I find any excuse I can to go a few times a year. The food is absolutely outstanding. This is a restaurant whose environment alone makes you want to come back. The waitstaff is wonderful and makes you feel comfortable. Nothing on the menu will disappoint, including the huge array of wines and drinks. Chinato is great for formal outings and informal outings, for foodies and the more conservative eaters. But my favorite reason to go is definitely just because."

  • "Overall I was not impressed with Chinato. The food was, as the title suggests, mediocre. The pasta had no outstanding qualities, the chicken liver mousse did not go well with its garnishes and the portions were not reasonable especially for the price. At first we were seated in a tiny corner in the back of the restaurant. It was loud and crowded which is not necessarily a bad thing, just not the atmosphere we had requested when the reservation was made. We were moved to the front which was more open and quiet. Overall service was notably slow but our server was wonderful. Very educated on the menu and was able to answer any questions we had thoroughly and effectively. Might try it again for appetizers and wine but not for dinner."

  • "This restaurant had great service, awesome tasting food with a excellent presentation. Very unusual menu with lots of good selections. I would highly recommend it. "

  • "Service was excellent. Waiter explained the many unique menu items we had questions with and suggested a reasonably priced white wine since we aren't well versed on the large selection of Italian wines that are available. The mussels appetizer containing feta cheese was extremely tasty. I'm not a huge fan of mussels and nearly talked talk my husband out of ordering them. That would have been a mistake. We also enjoyed the blackened cod entrée and the monk fish special. Fish was cooked just right and presentation was nice. Wish we had more room to try additional items on the menu (salad, dessert). Plan to return!"

  • "Chinato continues to be a good choice on 4th street, whether for a relaxed dinner with good food and wine, or for a prompt, yet not rushed, meal before an Indians game. They accommodated my wife's dietary needs very nicely, and my seafood soup was excellent. Service was friendly, attentive and efficient. Zach Bruell simply does not fall short of excellent in any of his restaurants."

  • "I was a little nervous cause I brought my 2 month old with me and the husbands on our double date were not really foodies. Our server explained everything with not only patience but charisma! It was a perfect evening and the food was AMAZING!"

  • "Special lunch with my daughter at Chinato--we're celebrating my birthday. Our server was able to help us find dishes for daughter's vegetarian needs and my dairy-and-gluten-free needs. The server asked my fish temperature request, and the salmon was exactly right. Daughter's gnocci was tender and delicious. Lovely location on East Fourth Street. I can't comment on parking, because I live nearby and I walked to Chinato."
