Diner Reviews
  • "notable signature dishes - awesome desserts. the dishes are served family style but do require a side dish as the main portions are not very large. desserts are however large enough for 3 people to share"

  • "I have been here many times in the past year and the food is fantastic. Try the short ribs (best ever) and the shrimp with black pasta. We ONLY ordered 2 entrees and one side vegetable dish and yet we were served the first entree a full 10-15 minutes before the second entree and vegetable side. NO excuse for this, especially since the restaurant was virtually empty other than the bar. I even asked where the second entree when the second entree was going to be served and was told "right away." It wasn't!"

  • "It was a awful experience. Last night of restaurant week and it wasn't very busy. I know why-- the food was awful and the service was also disappointing. I don't know how this restaurant has been here so long. I would NOT recommend it a t all"

  • "Had 4 dishes to share with my wife . Only the garlic shrimp was good. Long beans where so undercooked they were still cold.duck salad was just ok. It is a beautiful restaurant but the foof nrrds improvement."

  • "The food was great, I like everything that I ordered. Our waitress was funny and entertaining."

  • "We had eaten many times at China Grill in Las Vegas and we loved it. We would always have the spicy Asian Cesar salad and the glazed lamb ribs. The same meal in New York was more than disappointing. Salad had little to no flavour and the ribs were very fatty the rice was cold, had it replaced 3 times and the grilled beef $46.00. Was dried out sirloin. That is the end of china grill for us. The service was poor"

  • "excellent service...fast , with tasty food...fun buzzing atmosphere....very responsive waitress."

  • "Menu needs updating.... same selections for years. Adventuresome for first timers but not for returnees."

  • "I have been visiting China Grill for over 16 years and have never been disappointed with the food or service. It's a bit pricy but what do you expect for Midtown Manhattan."
    Dined on 8/12/2014
  • "Outstanding value. They really offered a great menu!"

  • "Very average restaurant in a busy area. Lamb Spare Ribs - Nothing special Beef Dumplings- Average Skirt Steak- I tried my friends portion and it was the best tasting of all dishes Szechuan Beef- One of the most expensive dishes on the menu, and it wasn't that good Duck Fried Rice- Tasted fine, but no better/different than a neighborhood hole in the wall Chinese place, just with duck Crispy Spinach- All the other dishes had stronger flavors, so we couldn't taste the spinach, it tasted like bland potato chips Wasabi Mashed Potatoes - Average mashed potatoes, with wasabi flavor Hazelnut Torte- Probably the least fresh tasting cake I've had in a long time Bananas in a Box- I expected warm bananas, but it was very cold, didn't care for it."

  • "China Grill used to be very cutting edge. Now it is just a big restaurant establishment. It felt like assembly line eating. Nothing special. Suitable for tourists but not for those looking for a wonderful dining experience"

  • "I have been in search for good Chinese food in mid-town Manhattan. My search has yielded good result. This place has great ambiance- indoor and outdoor. Great food and great service. The food is fusion food though."

  • "One of my favorite restaurants. The night i went there, the tasting menu wasnt being served but the chef madean exception. It was GREATLY appreciated and delicious as always. Wine pairing selection was on point as well. Bananas in a box will always have a place in my heart (and my stomach) along with the lobster pancakes."

  • "My husband and I found this restaraunt years ago and we were excited to take our kids on this trip. The service was horrible, bathrooms filthy (ladies bathroom had an attendant that expected a tip) and the management team was slow to respond to long delays in food and drinks. We will not be going back."

  • "I had the spicy tuna special and it was superb! The presentation was lovely, and the seaweed salad delicious. The service was superb."
    Dined on 8/7/2014
  • "The food was good but everything was swimming in soy sauce which is not expected in a high end Asian restaurant. Servings were generous and Caesar Salad was good."
    Dined on 8/7/2014
  • "Over all an enjoyable experience. Service was sometimes too swift and some of the "hot" dishes were only warm."

  • "wonderful food.....consistant. the service is spotty but this time it was fine."

  • "One of our favorites. Went because we were in NY. REservation was early - 4:00 pm, so place was not crowded. Had the restaurant week choices and were not disappointed. Attentive service and the food was what we have come to expect."

  • "Five of us went to lunch. We chose Spicy beef and scallion dumplings x 2, Crackling calamari salad x 2 and one order of curried chicken satay, family style. The calamari salad was out of this world, very unusual. We each ordered a main dish, I had the salmon which was slightly underdone even though I had asked for it well done. My fellow diners had the skirt steak x 2, another had salmon and the fifth had the chicken which was a huge portion. Our portions were adequate. For the sides we were allowed to order 3 sides, we had the wasabi mashed potatoes, wok sauteed vegetables and crispy spinach for which we had to pay extra but it was worth it. The service was quick. The dessert was disappointing as we didn't get 5 portions of Hazelnut torte."

  • "I've been going to China Grill since the '80s and it never disappoints. Large family style portions encourage the group to share in typical Asian style. The crispy spinach is a must! This restaurant is one of the first in NYC to serve Asian fusion cuisine and to have an open kitchen. Still is the best!"

  • "Food was very well prepared and the place is well decorated, bit expensive related to what you get"

  • "I've been coming to China a Grill for 30 years. My kids grew up coming here so they always want to revisit. The food was happily just as wonderful as always. Funny how the Confucius chicken never changes. Unfortunately, our waiter wasn't very attentive and seemed to be focused on another table. Overall, we had a good night just not amazing!"

  • "great service; fine, live spot and location; mediocre food; extremely unhealthy-excessive sauce, etc-which is odd for asian food; very heavy like french food, but it's asian!"
    Dined on 7/29/2014
  • "So many courses, tons of food, but everything was so good, I couldn't stop eating! Just wish we had more time to enjoy the food and the space. If you are seeing an 8 p.m. show, definitely get reservations for 6 p.m. or earlier if you want to do the tasting menu (which I would strongly recommend). Will go back very soon."

  • "This restaurant has become a favorite of mine. The food never disappoints as it's consistently great, lovely presentation and an excellent wait staff. If all restaurants delivered like china grill I'd have a hard time picking a dinner location."

  • "Great dining experience as usual - Love the crackling calamari!"

  • "This lace is very spacious and interior design is soothing and tranquil, especially for a hot summer day. Portion of the food was generous, and waiter was very knowledgeable and professional. Chicken satay was crispy outside and tender inside and delicious. Dumplings were gracefully presented with ample sauces. The main courses were also very good. Salmon was baked just right and taste of drunken chicken was well balanced. Would come again."

  • "The food was delicious and presented well. The server did not come to our table for over 15 minutes. Them brought drinks 15 minutes later, watered down with melted ice. Food was flavorful and beautiful."

  • "I visited the restaurant a year ago and had a very good experience maybe because it was late afternoon and the place was almost empty. I went again this week. The food was less impressive or unique, the service was ok. We had their "Restaurant week" menu so that might be the reason."

  • "1st visit for my husbands 40th birthday. The food and the service was amazing!"

  • "We went for lunch during the NYC Restaurant Week about a week ago. The waiter that worked at our table was very snobbish and rude. It took him a long time to take our orders. What became ridiculous is that when the food finally came, only one of two entrees were brought to us. When I finally asked about the second entree after we were almost finished with lunch, the waiter said nothing and went to the kitchen (I suppose) and brought me my entree of Salmon. The fish was cold on the touch. I pointed it out to the same waiter and I refused to accept it. He simply asked if I would like to have another one. No apology, no explanation. Simply rude! Never want to go there again."

  • "China Grill has a raft of interesting dishes that make it possible to have a tasty light lunch of assorted salads or a multi-course lunch or dinner covering a variety of ingredients and textures. Two can have a nice business lunch or dinner, and larger groups can take a tour through the interesting menu and share all of the flavors. I have never had a bad meal at China Grill, and know that I can take people there with confidence that they will leave happy and, if they have not been there before, occasionally impressed."
