went out with 6 friends and had a
very enjoyable meal. we brought tequila and had fresh margarita mix brought to us. Very good. Food was yummy. the only negative thing I can say is that the ventilation system needs a bit of work because it got a little smokey in there when a dish was prepared."

With so much great Mexican food in
the area, it can be a little hard to pay more. However, everything was $20 and under and worth the price. Plus, the BYO evens that out. Our waiter was very nice but there seemed to be some cultural disconnect. When another reservation showed up he told us we had to go. Granted, we sat for awhile, but we had ordered three courses and it probably could have been worded a little better. He wasn't rude, but just didn't seem to realize it's not appropriate to ask your table that just spent $150 to kindly shove off. Regardless, I'd still go back another time to give the chance of improvement there."

Went with a party of 6 and it was
just as expected, good food, different type of Mexican cooking. Not the standard typical food. Although a bit pricey for the atmosphere and amount of food."

normally Mexican restaurants make
you think of chips and salsa. here those things cost! yes you pay for the salsa...no kidding. the food was really very good and a bit different. the service was excellent. we were sitting close to the door and asked to move, and we were accommodated. this is a byob place as I a m allergic to beans I asked if I could have rice instead. when the entrees arrives there were beans. more than half way through the entrée...rice arrived. then I was charged 2.50 for a very small portion of rice. this was taken off the bill...come on, REALLY! other have mentioned the "rules" on the back of the menu. to me this ridiculous for a change, it was a good meal... I still like wholly frijoles (in Lincolnwood) much better!!!"

Group of 6. Appetizers and dessert
all great. Entrees were mixed. Two had the enchiladas and both said they were not very flavorful. I had the Chicken Oaxaca and thought it was wonderful. One had the pork shoulder and was not overly impressed and two ahd the steak and thought is was just OK. Except for the chicken, most thought that the restaurant compromised a bit betwween what the authentic cusiine really is all about and what they thought their customers would like. Suggest no compromises! They need a second door in the front in the winter as every time someone came or went we froze. I think this would be a great summer spot."

Walking by this restaurant in the
shadow of a railroad underpass just west of Western and Armitage, one might get the impression that it's just another Mexican place on the Westside. Nothing could be further from the truth: Chilapan is a funky little place with a gourmet menu prepared by Chef Jorge Miranda with the kind of mastery and agility that will wow even the most jaded foodie. We'd recommend starting with the grilled avocado stuffed with crab meat and served with house made tortilla chips dotted with a little cilantro paste that leave a roundness of taste that will make you want to order a second serving, but don't:Tthe entrees are even more thrilling. Why this restaurant isn't in Zagat's (and the Loop), I don't understand."

The food was great, but the
service and ambiance ruined it all."

We made reservations for 7 people
and found the staff to be incredibly attentive. Everyone raved about the shared appetizers and their own individual meals (top marks for the crab stuffed salmon and the skirt steak wrapped around sauteed spinach). The restaurant added to our joyous occasion. Thanks Chilipan!"

Chilapan never disappoints! We've
been coming here 3 months after they first opened and have never been disappointed by the fabulous food and welcoming and great service. The guacamole is the best ever and the chips are amazing. Start there!! Our favorites are Pechuga Poblana a pan seared chicken breast filled with spinach served over homemade creamy poblano salsa, YUMMM. My husband's favorite is Carne Yucatecan * WOW. If your lucky enough to come on a night when they serve their ribs you will be ecstatic!!!!!! It's also perfect for groups!!! Olga always makes you feel welcome and always remembers to serve us some of their fabulous Mexican coffee!!! We will be back. PLUS BYOB!!!!! You can't beat it."

I took my boyfriend here for his
birthday. The restaurant was very accommodating to our party of 7, everyone loved their dishes and the service was warm and friendly. Our server brought my boyfriend a chocolate with a birthday candle in it...nice ending to a great dinner. Looking forward to coming back!"

Overpriced $18 - $19 entrees
should have been priced at $8 - $10. Volcano entree was a small amount of food in a large vessel. Pork shoulder was good, but average. Again, overpriced compared to other good Logan Mexican restaurants."

Some of the best and most unique
Mexican food in Chicago. Is it Frontera ? No. And the location is not mainstream. But the food is exceptional, with a number of unique ingredients that we have not seen before. Kind of a funky atmosphere. You can bring your own tequila, and they will make margaritas for you."
Dined on 1/17/2014
The food was great, not your
typical Mexican fare. A little pricey, but portions were quite large. Inventive sauces play a role in most dishes. BYOB. Service was a bit slow, and unfortunately there was a smoky haze in the air. Like the exhaust fans in the kitchen were either inadequate or not working. I assume this is due to working out kinks in a new, much larger location. Will definitely return."
Dined on 1/17/2014
I had a great date night here with
my boyfriend. He had the steak and I had the salmon, both of which were delicious. I was underwhelmed by the guacamole (thought the portion size was small) and the chocolate tamale, but the flan was superb. It was a quiet night and we had wonderful service, which was attentive but not overbearing. I did not get the server's name, but he was great. It was a cute restaurant and I would definitely recommend it to diners who want to try elevated Mexican cuisine, and have the income to do so."

Great restaurant, the service was
great, the food was outstanding. Im not sure why the bad reviews, but working in a restaurant myself I know how petty and obnoxiously picky certain diners can be, Im guessing those are the ones who leave the bad reviews. We had the Chile Con Queso and Taquitos de Cochinita as appetizers, the Pollo Oaxaca and Enchiladas Divorciadas as our entrees and the Empanada de Pina and Chocoflan as desserts, and everything was delicious! I would not mind dining at this place every single day of the year! For those who think the food is expensive, clearly you do not know the difference between a Taqueria and a Mexican Restaurant. This is NOT Taqueria food. The food here is NOT mediocre and is worth every penny."
Dined on 1/13/2014
New location needs a little
updating but the food is solid good. BYOB is a plus, the steak entrees are the best. Save room for the chocolate tamela at the end of the meal...."

Food was excellent, as was service
& you can't beat the BYOB margarita pitchers."

Been here twice, have yet to.get
anything less than very good. Special shrimp mole excellent. And as always, choc masa dessert a delight."

Great time here with the woman.
Was a sunday night and surprisingly quite empty, just three tables in our time there. Overall, nice ambiance despite quiet. Food was fabulous, didn't get appetizers but thoroughly liked the volcano dish and steak (rollito). Volcano especially with its delightful combination of meats and rice, yum. Dessert was AMAZING Tamal de chocolate (first one on the list) the chocolate flavored masa filled tamal, AMAZING."

We live in Lincoln Park and were
delighted to discover Chilapan. Every bite of our dishes was outstanding. We began with the scallop escabeche and wanted to drink the remaining juice after we had eaten all the solid pieces. Then I orders the shrimp with pistachio sauce and my husband got the steak rollito. When our plates were cleared there was not a trace of food left because we used everything we could to mop up the sauce. The service was extremely friendly and prompt too on a busy Saturday night. I can't wait to go back."
Dined on 11/9/2013
Chilapan is an intimate spot, but
the owners were very accommodating to a group of 8. Entrees run about $20, not cheap, but Chilapan is BYO, so the total bill is reasonable. The food is refined but not fussy. I really enjoyed my meal, and everyone in the rest of my group did, too. Get the flan (you won't be disappointed)."
Dined on 11/7/2013
They were obviously short handed
the night we went. The food was good, but everything was very slow."
Dined on 10/26/2013
This is my second time at
Chilapan, although its been about a year. The food was as delicious as I remembered. It's a small place so be sure to make your reservation. My only complaint this visit was it took a long time for them to come back to our table when we were finished with our main course. I would definitely recommend this little BYOB find!"
Dined on 10/6/2013
Chilapan is simply fabulous. One
of top 5 restaurants in the city - hands down. Their sauces are second to none - could eat there once a week. Its BYOB as well which some see as positive, some negative."

delicious flavors, generous
portions, yum, yum, yum!"

We attempted to go here a couple
of moths ago, walked in 30 minutes before they closed and they told us they wouldn't serve us. One of my biggest pet peeves is when a restaurant doesn't stay true to their hours. We went to try again- The server never asked me for something to drink- he asked my husband and quickly left. He asked us for our order without giving us much time. Guacamole was fresh and tasty, and queso was different but very flavorful. For entrees we ordered enchiladas and my husband ordered skirt steak. Enchiladas were the winner. Sauce was Classic Mexican and had layers of flavor. When the dessert menu was dropped we were immediately asked what we want- at least give us 5 minutes to read it!"

I joined two friends at Chilapan
the other night, which was the second time I had been there. First: the food is exceptionally good. Second: The service has much to be desired. I was in a party of three. While two of us were waiting for our last companion, the waiter asked us TWICE if we were ready to order an entree. Upon her arrival (all of ten minutes late), he asked for our order before providing (or asking if we needed) a third glass. This was annoying, but fine. That said, the moment we finished with dessert, the waiter told us that we needed to leave because they needed the table. This has never happened to me at a restaurant. Ever. It was 10pm. There were several open tables. The food is delicious, but I won't be back."

My out-of-town girlfriends and I
dined here on a Friday evening before a show. We brought our own tequila and the staff whipped us up a pitcher of tasty, and potent, margaritas. The guacamole and Tamale appetizers were a huge hit. We ordered a variety of entrees, including he rolled steak and spinach, the enchiladas, and the chicken breast. We were all impressed with the high quality and inventiveness of the preparation and presentation of the dishes. This is definitely fit for foodies! The chocolate tamale really wowed us and we talked about it for days. Delightful dinner!"
Dined on 9/14/2013
The food here is terrific. Since
it is ago byo it is very affordable, especially for the quality. Definitely not a taqueria. However it is tiny and there is no place to wait for a table. Expect to eat, pay and leave, there is no lingering especially on a weekend night."
Dined on 9/14/2013
They seemed to have finally fixed
the ventilation problems that used to make this resto so smokey inside. Food continues to be good, although I'm bummed they took my favorite shrimp dish and the excellent pineapple upside down cake off the menu. One tip: don't let the waiter take your tequila bottle in the kitchen to add to the margarita mix. He brought the bottle back 1/3 full -- putting 2/3 bottle of tequila in the pitcher was way, way too much. Next time I'll ask to add my own tequila."

Enjoyed our meal very much.
Waitress (perhaps owner?) very helpful. We couldn't decide which 3 of 4 dishes we wanted so she offered to surprise us - all 3 were really very very good with excellent explanation of their preparations and ingredients. The restaurant itself is fairly basic in keeping with the neighborhood and although we sat under the air conditioner it was a hot night and so was the room (we found this to be the same at 3 other neighborhood "gems" we visited on this trip as it was a hot week). BYO is also great. Would definitely go back again."

I dined here for the first time
this past weekend, and it was a very pleasant experience. The steak is outstanding, and so were the sides. Unfortunately, they seem to be a little short handed, as it's a small place and we had to have someone track down our waiter when our food took an hour to get to us. They rectified it by giving us a free dessert, which made it all worthwhile. I would definitely recommend this spot."
Dined on 8/25/2013
I've been to this BYO at least
half a dozen times prior, but this was terrible. I had been craving a good juicy skirt steak, so I ordered the "yucatan" steak. When it came, I cut into it, took a bite and found it quite chewy. There were two pieces so I decided to cut into the other piece and that was quite chewy as well, and the only thing I could taste was the Yucatan sauce. I decided I did not want to eat this steak and put it into my body. When we asked for the check, our fun began. We were charged the full price of the skirtsteak. When we protested, the owner told us we had to pay. I said no. I put down some money on the table and we started to leave. She followed us and she told me to "get out of here" and she actually pushed me."
Dined on 8/11/2013
Entrees were very creative
versions and combinations of good Mexican gourmet-style cooking. In Mexico you would find this sort of food in an upscale colonia in Mexico City such as La Condesa. The gringo customs were 1) not to provide salsas with the meals but charging extra--although it was a nice little salsa called "la macha" made with habaneros; 2) charging extra for tortillas with some plates, especially since the tortillas were straight from the "El Milagro"--not even hechas a mano. For Mexicans, tortillas and salsa are the essentials of any meal--how could a meal not include them? Nevertheless, the clientele this restaurant serves is not Mexican, so it probably doesn't matter. That said, the deserts were fantastic."
Dined on 8/4/2013
Small restaurant with great
atmosphere, but slightly loud to have a conversation with four. There was a large table in middle which may have contributed to the high level of noise. The food was incredible, we had pulled pork and flat iron steak. The homemade guacomole with medium spice had just enough kick. Tamale brownie melted in your mouth. We brought our own Tequila for the homemade magaritas and they were outstanding. The service was perfect."

This was our second visit to
Chilapan. We enjoyed our meal as much this time, if not more, than our first vist. I can not rave enough about this place enough...2 days later and I am still thinking about the food! Additionally, the service is wonderful!"

we will return soon!"

I was blown away with my octopus
starter. It was incredibly tender. I will be ordering it again the next time we go. My husband said the warm mexican chocolate cake was the best dessert he'd ever had. The staff were very polite. The restaurant itself was really cute; brightly colored with some really interesting art on the walls. The fact that it's BYOB really keeps the price down too. I brought a wonderful bottle of Reisling that really cut through the spice of the sauces. Highly recommend. We will be going again."
Dined on 7/14/2013
My husband is Mexican and he loved
this place! Service is great, food is authentic, and it's BYOB. The prices seem high but the BYOB makes up for it. We ordered an appetizer, two entrees (salmon and steak) and a dessert for $60. Will definitely be taking my inlaws when they come into town."
Dined on 7/9/2013
I arrived weary of the location
and was pleasantly surprised as soon as I opened the door. Very kind staff seated and walked us through the menu. We took advantage of BYOT = Bring your own Tequila and had them mix up a pitcher for us. The waiter literally poured half the bottle in one pitcher but it was amazing. The Volcano was amazing and I would highly recommend. Great experience overall."
