A word from Chico Julio
Named for Mexico’s first deep-sea diver (“Little Jewel”); a casual restaurant serving traditional seafood dishes from the coasts of Mexico and beyond. It is the first New York location of a concept embraced by diners in Mexico City and Guadalajara.
A lively botaneria/cantina-style atmosphere, inside and in the festive backyard patio. Bright, fresh colors and vivid imagery, with a large wooden bar imported from Mexico. The traditional, authentic menu will offer simple, fresh preparations of ceviches, fish tacos, aguachiles, sandwiches as well as a whole fish of the day. Meat lovers will not be neglected.

Diner Reviews
  • "Incredible, fresh, and I can't wait to go back. Finally a restaurant worth going to in this area."

  • "Very disappointing from the start. Me, "Good evening, I have a reservation." Hostess, "Wha'happen'?" Taken to requested table in garden that was not set and remained that way until starters arrived, 25 minutes later. Guacamole pre-made and cold. 3 different taco main dishes arrived, but not the "special" shrimp fajita. Tacos just fair at best, finished just as fajita arrived. Fajita greasy and not good. Wait staff that had been literally invisible pressures to clear table while late fajita is still being eaten. Restaurant 85% empty. There's a clue! Is this space haunted? Pampa was great for the nabe, Cafe Frida very good. Since then bad news X 3. After Chico Julio is gone I'll be more cautious. Next! With hopefully new ownership."

  • "Although the garden was beautiful, and the food and drinks were surprisingly good, we were so aggravated by the service that we won't return. There was plenty of wait staff, and although the inside of the restaurant was empty, there was frequently not a waiter to be found in the garden. I had to get up and walk into the restaurant to find a waiter."

  • "The food is very creative and very attractively presented. The waiters were particularly nice and helpful and the restaurant had a fun and boyant atmosphere."

  • "Orale Mexican Kitchen has many things going for it: Great food, lovely/funky interior décor (check out the illuminated Jaritos Soda Wall), a gorgeous back patio for dining and attentive, friendly service. I have been there twice and enjoyed both visits. Friends I've brought with me have fallen in love with place as well. Recommended Dishes: Tacos, Enchiladas with Cashew Mole, Enchiladas Suizas, Guacamole El Naco with the Crisp Pork Belly, Brussels Sprouts, Dulce de Leche Cake, Homemade Brownies"

  • "We had a medium sized group (7). I was looking for a Mexican place (since some people come from a country where you can't get good Mexican) with adequate outdoor seating for all. This was the perfect place. We were a little late for the reservation (I called), no problem. The outdoor space is a lovely patio in the back, rather than (as I had feared) seating on Amsterdam Ave. The food was very good and a good deal, but not outstanding. A fairly conservative and limited menu. The guacamoles are tasty, with interesting variants (fruit, for example). I had the "Enchilada Jarocha", chicken in a mole sauce with hazelnuts. Unusual and very good. The Brussels sprouts were a surprising and fun appetzier (and presumably not very Mexican)."

  • "This new Mexican restaurant has a limited menu, but everything we sampled, from the variety of soft tacos to the appetizers, was delicious. The backyard patio is roomy and inviting."

  • "The title says it all...Food was fantastic and the servers were absolutely lovely. Can't wait to go back."

  • "Some interesting culinary selections and not everything was a winner. But we were looking for Mexican Comfort food, rather than to be impressed by the cocktails etc. Decor was fun and bright, staff were bright and friendly, but it was not what we were there for."

  • "Delicious mexican food in a beautiful space with excellent and friendly servers. The garden space was the perfect place for our sumptuous mexican Mother's Day dinner! We will definitely return again!"

  • "We happen upon this resturant and very happy we did! The drinks and food were great. They have a outside garden which was lovely. "
    Dined on 5/11/2014
  • "The cocktails are inventive and the menu offers options fit for foodies. If you seek quieter seating, ask to be seated in the back where the music is not blaring."

  • "My companion and I had two different types of taco plates. We wanted to mix various taco types (they serve five small tacos and offer about five different varieties), but our server told us that the kitchen wasn't up to the level of complexity because the restaurant is new and is still getting its act together. But the food and our frozen cocktails were decent, but unspectacular. I did really enjoy the various spicy salsas that were served along with our tacos. The chipotle salsa was especially delicious. Our server was very professional and friendly."

  • "Of all the recent Mexican restaurants that have sprouted up in the neighborhood, this one stands out. Be sure to get the tuna tacos: an inside out taco, it is outstanding! As a group of 3, we were very satisfied with guacamole (not prepared tableside, but comes with 3 sauces), plenty of chips, cerviche, tuna tacos, pork tacos and a chicken enchaladha. Excellent food with fast service. Will definitely bring friends, especially in the nice weather with the backyard patio. "

  • "Love the reboot of this restaurant, which was formerly Cafe Frieda. The decor is a little hipper and gives the restaurant a more energetic feel. We loved everything we tried, except the bleu cheese guacamole. Definitely recommend trying an enchilada--we tried each of the options on the menu and they were all great and made for a fun sharing experience. Also the table salsa options were fantastic. "

  • "We were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the meal we had at Orale Mexican Kitchen this week. We were a party of 5 and shared three guacamole dishes, one with blue cheese, (Excellent) and 5 plates of different tacos. Perfect! The only negative of the meal was the undrinkable margaritas. Weak and tasteless."

  • "Went twice in one week for the tuna tacos because they are amazing. Quality of drinks is spotty so don't be afraid to send back if you don't like. They will remake. Service very good, new decor is fun. Can't wait for the terrace to open."

  • "A fun, interesting menu. It standouts from traditional Mexican options."

  • "The menu is much more interesting with a wide range of options, inventive dishes, and great specialty cocktails."

  • "The food is OK but not great. No longer Cafe Frida with the great steaks and inventive ceviche. The guacamole is OK but no big deal. The ceviche was a little too fishy for me to try again. I couldn't taste the fish tacos because they were littered with the orange chipotle emulsion they make. Hey, its a condiment on the table, let me decide to put it on the tacos! The dining room has been redecorated and looks better but I fear they may have closed down the patio dining in the back. The service could stand to be less "Broadway" and more down to earth. Not sure I'll be hurrying back."

  • "I really enjoyed the service, and the food. The drinks were basically ice - very little else. The woman beside us was totally obnoxious, but that was not the fault of the restaurant - I would highly recommend the food and service -"

  • "We were curious to see what would be done with one of our favorite neighborhood haunts (cafe Frida) and we absolutely love what was done! Food VERY good - we had tacos al pastor and the tuna/salmon ceviche, guac of course - portions - great, price - reasonable, ambiance was alive which is nice as the uws can sometimes be a bit sedated Will definitely go back!"

  • "Always something great. The pork shoulder tacos and Queso with chorizo are two of my favorites."

  • "Glad that Frida's saved the wonderful parilla grill from earlier days as La Pampa. They may not be from Argentina but they were wise enough to preserve a few choice items from the old porteno menu."

  • "This was a return visit Waiter kept trying to upsell Had to send back our appetizer (shrimp). Disappointing visit overall"

  • "It used to be an Argentinean steak house and they kept the grill. Order the parillada for two, even though it's no longer on the menu. It feeds three and it's fantastic."

  • "This was our third visit, and it doesn't disappoint. The servers are lovely, as was the host, and the food is always so good.I don't know how they do it. They have some unusual Mexican dishes. They are very attentive to requests and careful about food allergies and dislikes. Just great tasting food!"

  • "Delightful experience. Had the guacamole (great taste, modest portion) and fajitas (excellent taste, good portion). We'll be back."

  • "Cafe Frida was s very pleasant find. My friend and I had the grill special-- which was outstanding. There was enough food for three people, and the meats were very tasty and tender. Both the wives enjoyed their meals and I would heartily recommend this restaurant to anyone-- whether it is in your neighborhood or you have to travel to get there!"

  • "North of 96th you'd expect a little more bang for your buck. Waiter was nice but not attentive once we stopped ordering drinks. Sat at the table for almost 20 minutes before someone took our order. Once food came (small, expensive) no one stopped by. Will not return. What we did have was good. Not great, but good."
    Dined on 11/24/2013
  • "Food was ok, but really awful presentation. Service was confused - staff served items that were not what was ordered or for other tables. Bill was returned with incorrect change twice - both times shortchanging the client. Sound system was dreadful - a droning bass that sounded like a dentist's drill throughout the entire meal. Guac was good, after that - downhill all the way. This is NOT like the grat Frida's on Columbus and 77th. Go there, not to this one on Amsterdam and 97th."

  • "Service was very friendly. Food was very good. A bit loud. We did have to wait about 10/15 minutes for our table."

  • "We loved Cafe Frida. The food was delicious, so fresh, and the drinks were very good too. A+"

  • "Portions are small but good. Noisy. Do not sit next to back outdoor garden door when its cold... it is very uncomfortable when the door is being opened all of the time"
    Dined on 10/18/2013
  • "The first time I went to this restaurant I really enjoyed it. This time, the service was fair, they seemed to forget us. They didn't bring our appetizers and then brought the main dish so we told them to forget it. We wanted coffee and dessert and was told their coffee machine wasn't working. We left the restaurant hungry and won't be back."

  • "We enjoyed the meal but it took forever to get served and finally had to get up and find the manager in order pay our bill."

  • "Love this restaurant. Drinks are always good, love the guac, and main dishes are good too."
