A word from Chico Julio
Named for Mexico’s first deep-sea diver (“Little Jewel”); a casual restaurant serving traditional seafood dishes from the coasts of Mexico and beyond. It is the first New York location of a concept embraced by diners in Mexico City and Guadalajara.
A lively botaneria/cantina-style atmosphere, inside and in the festive backyard patio. Bright, fresh colors and vivid imagery, with a large wooden bar imported from Mexico. The traditional, authentic menu will offer simple, fresh preparations of ceviches, fish tacos, aguachiles, sandwiches as well as a whole fish of the day. Meat lovers will not be neglected.

  • "DON'T DO IT! This place was awful. Food was mediocre. Service was absurdly awful. Our food did not arrive until over an hour and a half after we ordered. We watched staff stand around while we waited for food, had to ask every time to have a drink refilled. Waiter and management were unapologetic, and the waiter was just downright rude. He messed up multiple things in our order (we were a party of 3). Oh, and it's a Mexican restaurant, right? The Chips & Guac was served with cold and stale tortilla chips, and the Guacamole had brown spots. The Sangria was watery. The table water was warm. Normally I give restaurants in my neighborhood more than one chance (it is so close to me) but I am never going back! Warning neighbors to stay away!"

  • "The guacamole and the flan were the standout dishes that we tried. We also had the branzino special which was overdone and underwhelming. However the tables nest to us had taco sampling platters that looked amazing. I would definitely order those if I were in the neighborhood."

  • "Very disappointing from the start. Me, "Good evening, I have a reservation." Hostess, "Wha'happen'?" Taken to requested table in garden that was not set and remained that way until starters arrived, 25 minutes later. Guacamole pre-made and cold. 3 different taco main dishes arrived, but not the "special" shrimp fajita. Tacos just fair at best, finished just as fajita arrived. Fajita greasy and not good. Wait staff that had been literally invisible pressures to clear table while late fajita is still being eaten. Restaurant 85% empty. There's a clue! Is this space haunted? Pampa was great for the nabe, Cafe Frida very good. Since then bad news X 3. After Chico Julio is gone I'll be more cautious. Next! With hopefully new ownership."

  • "Although the garden was beautiful, and the food and drinks were surprisingly good, we were so aggravated by the service that we won't return. There was plenty of wait staff, and although the inside of the restaurant was empty, there was frequently not a waiter to be found in the garden. I had to get up and walk into the restaurant to find a waiter."

  • "We have been to Frida many many times. It is honestly some of the BEST mexican in NYC. We try and try to find another place, but to no avail. The food is fresh, tasty, creative and the service is friendly and fast. Everything on the menu is worth trying, but the grilled corn is amazing! I watched a woman next to me order 4 servings of it and then I tried it and was hooked. The happy hour consists of $2 tacos and $7 margaritas ... and they are GOOD! This is upscale food for a reasonable price and a beautiful place. Dine in the back yard, it's a spot of heaven."

  • "Such wonderful authentic mexican food. Lamb was amazing as was my daughter's tampiquena. A bit surprised at the price of the guacamole for the portion size; either lower the price or offer more guac! Service was very good accept when we were finished our meal and after dinner tequila, it took a very long time to get our check even when we told our server that we were finished and not in need of anything else."
