A word from Chiarella's Ristorante
With over 35 years in the restaurant business, Dina Chiarella DeFino and Thomas DeFino have brought the taste of the "original" Chiarella's to South Philadelphia. Come enjoy dishes from the original menu started in Wildwood,NJ by Jimmy Chiarella in 1970,along with our new menu prepared with a new age flair. Bring your favorite bottle of wine, sit in front of the fountain, and enjoy your dinner! Thomas Defino boasts about 30 years of restaurant experience covering every facet of the industry. He assisted in making the Chiarellas dining experience an unparraled one in the Jersey Shore area. He also brings a knowledge of Philadelphians and what they love to Chiarellas. His winning smile and pleasant demeanor should be reason enough to enjoy a trip to Chiarellas.Continued

  • "I'd only eaten at Chiarella's once before, and was so happy to have a chance to visit again. I live in San Francisco, come to Philly now and then, and having a meal at Chiarella's is one of the highlights of my visit. The food is always amazing, fresh and delicious, made with love - you can really taste that. I felt nourished on so many levels. I'll come here as often as I can, there's nothing like it!"

  • "A unexpected trip into the city was met with one of the best dining experiences in recent memory. Having known and dined at the Chiarellas at jersey shore, our expectations were high to have the same dining experience. S Philly Chiarella's didn't disappoint. The food was outstanding and the environment friendly and welcoming. The overall taste of each entry and app was splendid but it was the fact that you could taste the quality of each individual ingredient that made you know that these people know what it takes to cook Great Italian dishes. Only disappointment was coming away knowing that we missed out on some great food for the last 8 years not knowing of this place. Have a lot of making up to do!!"

  • "We took advantage of East Passyunk's Restaurant Week and was not disappointed! Staff was amiable, food delicious and we had the best ricotta cannoli."

  • "My cousin and I decided to visit this restaurant during Restaurant Week. We were seated right away and were greeted by locals that had been dining as well. The owner came to the table and introduced himself. He was very nice and wanted to make sure we had a feast experience. Our waitress was equally as nice and have us quality service. The food came out quickly and it was !! I absolutely recommend that you try this restaurant . It was everything we hoped it would be and more."

  • "Three of my girlfriends and I dined at Chiarella's during Passyunk Avenue Restaurant Week. We were all pleasantly surprised by the food. The soup was good the salads were good, but the entrees were amazing. I had the Chicken Chiarella which was one of the best entrees I have eaten in my life. Two friends had a the pork rollatini and one friend had the Tilapia. Everyone was raving about their meals. The service was fast and friendly. We would all go back again!"

  • "My overall impression is somewhat diminished by the fact that we were seated next to a very large (probably 20 or so) - and very loud - child's birthday party. Next, there was no bargain associated with the $35 restaurant week prix fixe; i.e., what was offered would have cost the same if ordered off the regular menu. And the escarole soup - while good - was served in a small cup, not a bowl. In addition, the Caesar and house salads featured far too much of the "ribs" and "ends" of romaine (vs the "hearts"). The bread was horrible. Come on !This is South Philly - you should be able to come up with good crusty Italian bread ! The frutta di mare, however, was quite tasty."

  • "We were a party of 4. Some of us liked it and would go back. The others thought isn't was just fair. I guess it depends on what you order."

  • "Everything was excellent...food was tasty, service was friendly and attentive. We were there for restaurant week and were able to sample many different items at our table...none disappointed."

  • "This place really surprised me. Started out with owner Tom, very pleasant and courteous. The restaurant was out of my expectation when I traveled out to Philly this past week. A down to earth pizzeria looking restaurant has welcoming staff and tasty food. I love to go back again."

  • "What a great find this was and the staff is amazing. You're treated like family and feel like your at your grandmothers Sunday dinner. There is no stuffiness and be ready for some good food. Hardest decision was what to order as everything seemed so good. Will be back multiple times. Enjoy"

  • "It's small and the regulars are loud, but the food is good and the atmosphere is warm if you're in the right mood. The owners and staff are very nice and make you feel like you're being welcomed into their home. Decently priced entrees too."

  • "Plenty of South Philly charm, with good food and casual but attentive and friendly service."

  • "Food was great. Service was slow but it was Valentine's night and I'm certain a quite a bit busier than usual for them. Still the waiters worked hard and were very friendly. The options were very classic Italian and very good."

  • "If you're looking for good Italian cuisine, this is the place. Family-run place, awesome. Brought me a more expensive dish then I ordered, began eating it... was then rewarded with my original order to-go, on the house... so I had two meals...... I found this charming/accommodating. Not bad prices, for the quality. Just a really nice place run by nice people. Highly suggested."

  • "Our family enjoyed a wonderful meal, the owner and waiter were friendly and fun. The waiter recommended the Orecchiette with sausage and broccoli rabe and it was fabulous! Not usually a fan of broccoli rabe but it worked for me in this dish....delicious!! We will be returning to Chiarella's.."

  • "This white tablecloth BYO was a great find in a wide field of fantastic choices in Passyunk Square. The food was amazing (the orecchiette and sausage was particularly great and the desserts are definitely worth saving space for. Would I go back again? In a heartbeat!"

  • "The appetizers were fair, at best, but the salads and entrees were above average; the desserts were average. You could certainly tell who their regulars were, and we felt a bit like outsiders, but they were kind. Worth the trip, but would probably explore other restaurants before we returned. I think all their great reviews are written by South Philadelphians."
