Diner Reviews
  • "I want to like this place more than I do, but I still am up for mostly recommending it. The food is just ok - I've been for lunch and the weekend brunch and both times it was fine but I wondered if I had "ordered wrong" as it was nothing special and others had raved about it. I've had much better food in a myriad of local restaurants. I like the atmosphere, service and solid menu selections. The parking lot is a pain, though - and the food not worth a long wait, so if it's crowed, go some place else! Otherwise, you will likely enjoy it."

  • "I've only eaten brunch here but it was very good. The menu offers unusual items and the ambience is festive...AND you can make a reservation (love that!). I highly recommend Chez Zee!"

  • "Chez Zee is one of my favorite restaurants because of it's convenient location, ample parking, great service and tasty food. I also appreciate it for being the type of restaurant where you can have a conversation without feeling hearing impaired due to too much noise in the room."

  • "I really like Chez Zee because of the food, the atmosphere and the service. I also like the piano music. Although they offer gluten free options, none of their bread is gluten free. It would be nice if they could make a gluten free french toast or a gluten free croissant."

  • "Chez Zee used to be our favorite restaurant. The last two times we have been there we have been led to small tables in the corner (even tho we had made reservations way in advance) and the friendly Chez Zee attention and service that made it special were no longer there. We might as well have been at Applebee's. The food was so so. It's too bad but I think we have to find a new favorite restaurant ."

  • "Their brunch options are especially great for rich food. I had a reservation and we were seated promptly. However, no one greeted us for over 5 minutes. Just as I was about to get up, our server stopped and said he'd be right with us. Another few minutes went by, but we saw he had about 4 tables seated at once, including a large party. Although I was somewhat sympathetic, their poor planning is no reason I should wait almost 10 minutes for coffee and water. Our server redeemed himself quickly. He suggested how to amp up my coffee (it is too weak) and then "refilled" it quickly. He was pleasant when my companion changed his mind about order particulars twice. I was very impressed with his professionalism. Overall a nice experience."

  • "Food and ambiance were good. It wasn't crowded the night we were there, so it was pleasantly quiet. Service was slow, inadequately attentive, and rough around the edges. It was July 4, so maybe it was a fill-in staff person."

  • "Big sign promoting Happy Hour at the door, but no details. Turns out it's $1 off cocktails (whoopee) and $5 house wines. We asked our waiter what the house wines were and he did not know. He went to check at the bar, came back and named the label but not the grape. Seriously?"

  • "My three friends from Victoria and Houston really enjoyed our Sunday brunch. There's something for everyone and they really enjoyed the atmosphere. I'm sure we'll be back when they come for another visit."

  • "We had dinner at the restaurant on Balcones in Austin after a small wedding. We got there early and they had no problem seating. The waiter was very nice and attentive. This is a great place to have a group or just for two. Thank you."

  • "Chez Zee is a great place for a group of women to meet in north Austin because the location is great for those who need to get on MOPAC, the menu is extensive, the service is consistently accommodating and unobtrusive, and the noise level is low on most week nights so you can hear each other. Even though the menu is sophisticated, Chez Zee has the best chicken fried steak in town in my opinion. My group 3 to 6 meets every other month and we've been to Chez Zee twice in a row and will come back again. It hits all the right notes."

  • "Chez Zee is a go to place for me. I really love the menu. It has some staples and some unique items. The shrimp/corn bisque is out of this world. Today I had my favorite salad, the southwestern chicken salad. It's not your ordinary chicken salad--it's a nice blend of jicama, celery, chopped dates, onions, toasted pecans and just the right amount of mayo. Highly recommend Chez Zee for lunch with friends or with business colleagues. The Sunday Brunch is also a local secret--really good especially the crème brulee French toast."

  • "Great brunch menu - definitely a must to try - the Cream Brulee french toast - we ordered as an appetizer and everyone gets a slice of pure goodness. Best chicken & waffles in town. Amazing service."

  • "Chez Zee is a wonderfully romantic and quaint restaraunt, with a delightful dinner selection of American cuisine. The ambiance is top notch, with a piano playing in the front that sounds lovely and decorative lights and tasteful art covering the walls. The service is quick, professional, and superb. Finally, their selection of desserts is mouthwatering, whether it be the classic cheesecake or the 4-Layer chocolate cake. Overall a great dining experience, cannot wait to go back again! Would suggest to anyone looking for a cute, romantic dinner/lunch spot, that is well worth every penny."

  • "I took my father to Chez Zee for Father's Day brunch. The reservation system online worked out wonderfully and I highly recommend using it to bypass the crowd waiting, we were seated immeadiately upon arriving. I thought the food was very good, in particular the vegetarian eggs Benedict but would not order the Creme Brûlée French toast again as the bread was too dense and I've had much better. The server was not attentive and rather cold though. Hopefully she is the exception and not the norm because for such a nice restaurant this service experience took the shine off of the experience, especially for a special occasion. I would go again because of the ambience and food is but another poor service experience would be the last."

  • "Ordered simple breakfast, eggs were ordered overhard, came out runny, home fries/potatoes were bland, sausage etc was just ok. Place was cute service ok...wouldn't go again. Also we ate less than half our food and waitress didn't ask if the food was ok when clearing plates."

  • "We ate at Chez Zee for Father's Day brunch, because it's what my husband requested. The food tasted good, and would eat it any time, but it was the exceptional service that made the difference. Our waitress was on top of everything, helpful, and friendly - amazing, especially since it was a very busy day. My sons and I are gluten-free, and we were able to eat delicious food. It was nice that we actually had a choice of items, which isn't always the case at restaurants. I recommend the new ancient grains pancakes, which were yummy. We will definitely go there again, and will bring the grandparents with us!"

  • "As usual, we had outstanding service, but the food wasn't up to standard. I had the prime rib special and, although flavorful, it was a bit over cooked. I ordered it medium and it was closer to well done. The asparagus also was over cooked."

  • "Chez Zee is a classic, always great for Brunch. The best thing was it was Fathers Day and they were very busy but with our Open Table reservation we were seated right away. Their Crème Brule French Toast is awesome and the server was excellent. Great experience."

  • "We brought grandkids here -- they had a perfect Kids Menu and we were able to have gourmet grown-up food with right-sized servings! Plus -- the kids had great fun exploring the enticing house-made dessert display. We fell in love with the dark chocolate torte (pretty sure it was flourless -- about the best we've ever tasted!) Also -- the hibiscus mint iced tea was such a treat."

  • "My wife have been coming here for years....in fact we came this time to celebrate our 5 year anniversary -- we actually got married in the Gallery at Chez Zee. The service was great. When we mentioned we were there for our anniversary, our waiter brought us a piece of lemon rosemary cake with Happy Anniversary icing on the plate! A great touch. The meal was excellent. We always choose this restaurant for special occasions."

  • "Just had brunch with some friends celebrating a birthday. This is one of the best places in town for weekend brunch. I had the eggs Benedict. Others had blueberry pancakes and migas. Food was great. This place never disappoints. Friendly and accommodating staff. Beautiful patio dining as well. Great desserts--especially the Italian cream cake--my all time favorite. We come here often and enjoy everything about the place."

  • "I love all that Chez Zee has to offer! I particularly enjoy the way they treat returning customers. Becky who mans the hostess stand always calls me by name and sees to it we are seated as soon as the first guest arrives."

  • "I was told to check out this place before I move out of Austin and I'm glad I did! I was warned to make a reservation which can be challenging to me in my last days here but I'm so glad I did. The food was delicious, the environment has a good vibe. Our table wasn't ready right on time, but we were waiting for someone else so it was fine. Once it was ready, the server or whoever didn't come right away to show us to our table, so the hostess stepped up and did so herself. Super friendly and helpful. I'm glad I made time for this!"

  • "Some of the food is great; most is pedestrian. The Ceasar salad was soggy and lacked "zing". The pasta primavera was just "so-so". The trout was nothing to write home about. The pecan crusted chicken was yummy, as was the lemon rosemary cake. Bit pricey for the quality."

  • "Charming, warm, romantic, spirited, delicious, and fun. Outstanding food, decadent desserts, and great service. Chez Zee is one of my top five favorites in Austin. Took my wife for her birthday two years in a row, plus a great place to take business clients, or any occasion where great food, great service, and an inviting atmosphere is called for. I do have to add, however, that I also ordered flowers (vase of roses) via Open Table's integrated flower provider (flowerpetal.com) and the flowers were not delivered - this was an EPIC FAIL and I will not use this feature again until Open Table partners with a different provider. Missing flowers aside, this is a well deserved 5 star review for Chez Zee!"

  • "I have loved Chez Zee for 20 years. I find it best for lunch and dinner and the food is always spectacular. I had brunch there last Sunday and I was somewhat disappointed, but it wasn't Chez Zee's fault. The restaurant is suffering on Sunday from too many people loving it too much. I found the restaurant way too noisy and chaotic. Chez Zee did the best that any restaurant could with the hoards who showed up. The people dressed far too casually. So I will continue to take all my out of town guests there, and to recommend it highly to any group who is planning a breakfast (other than Sunday), coffee break, lunch, dinner, late evening nightcap, or reception."
