Iv'e eaten here three other times afew year ago and it was great but now the menu is very limated sercice poor and the food not very good, and not much on the plate for the price. It looks to me as a resturant on the way out . A shame it used to be a great place.

This restaurant has really fallen from it's stellar beginning. The food is good, but some of the dishes are not the caliber of 4 or 5 stars. Makes me wondering who is creating the menu now and did they taste it before they served it to patrons? Most disappointing was the sloppy service. At these prices, the expectation for food and service is much higher then they deliver.

We liked the restaurant and service, but the food was a little too precious (too many odd ingredients like "coffee soil" and "potato foam"). The fish and steak were properly prepared and had good texture, but the accompaniments didn't work. The desserts were good. Three of us split a $78 bottle of wine, one appetizer (radish salad with stems attached), 2 entrees, and 2 desserts for $210 with tax & 18% tip.

We booked because the menu looked innovative. In fact, while the presentation on the plate was pretty (aside from the omnipresent "sea foam," so dated), the flavors were unremarkable and the portions remarkably small. Nothing on the dessert menu tempted. The wine list was mediocre at best. And three stars for the service is generous: our waiter forget to tell us that there had been a substitution on the fish until after it was ordered, and offered a truffle upgrade without telling the price surcharge.

Maybe I am being too harsh on this place and they had an off night as many other establishments do on NYE or Valentine's, but I feel that I have to be honest. When we arrived on time our table was not ready, and only after much arguing we were seated almost 30 mins late. The appetizers were good but the rest of the prix-fix menu was just blah. Our waiter was great but everything everyone else and everything other than the appetizers were not up to standard

  • I ate at Chez Papa Resto right

I ate at Chez Papa Resto right after it opened. I remembered it having pretty solid French food, so, when I was booking for NYE at the last minute, I thought it would be a good choice. The prix fixe looked intriguing, if not really French. What we ended up getting was a odd mish-mash of foods, and most had foams on top. A lot of foam. The appetizers were pretty mediocre and the desserts were really bad. I love dessert and will usually eat them regardless of execution, but there were bad flavors that I couldn't identify. The mains were pretty good, but on the small side. The service was spotty, but fine. I wish the chef would stop experimenting so much (enough with the foams!) and present one cuisine solidly. I'll not be back.

The restaurant is overrated, bland food, seafood was toooooo fishy, extremely large portions for a very large bill, disappointed that the promfrittes were much thicker than steak fries. The flavor was great but I prefer thin fries. I'd recommend other French restaurants.

I'd recommend it for diners more adventurous than we are. THe food is carefully prepared and the service is fine but we found the experience a disappointment. We first went to Chez Papa when it was under a different chef and loved his California/French cuisine. This with its mid eastern spices seasonings and foam not so much. I'm hoping the trend for goofy taste sensations ends soon.

This used to be one of our favorite restaurants, but no more. The quality has suffered as the owner opened more restaurants. The food is just not very good anymore. Our appetizer, their take on chips and dip, was burnt. The risotto was overcooked and bland. The quail egg on top was rock hard and dry. Service was slow. I could have made a much better meal at home and saved $150. We had a similar experience the last time we visited and hoped it was just an off night. Now we're done with Chez Papa.

With a party of 7, we ordered several appetizers. When everyone took their first bites of the various dishes, nearly everyone said, "wow, that was salty." The shooters looked great, but seemed drenched in soy. The frites were also overly salty. For entree, I had the chicken and thought that it was just OK, nothing special. Cocktail was the melted fizzy popsicle manhattan, which I found to be bitter and not great - and I'm a huge manhattan fan. Dessert was the eclair with pistachio ice cream, and was, again, just OK. With an amazing selection of other restaurants within a few blocks, I'd recommend trying others before this one.

This is our fifth time at Chez Papa...not sure I will go again...the staff was very nice until the end of the meal...I guess because we did not order drinks/wine to increase the bill the 22% tip was not enough for the waiter (woman) to thank us! She looked right at me when we were leaving and turned away. the dinner bill was 135.00USD for two people. However the rest of the staff thanked us for our business. There are many outstanding places to dine in San Francisco, there is no need for us to return to the property next year on our annual visit.

The menu changes frequently, and the chef is doing interesting deconstructions of conventional dishes. I had the Fluke with Buddha Hand foam the first night it was being served, and it was outstanding, with a delicate lemony essence counterbalanced by savory flavors and textural admixture. The "aerated chocolate" dessert looked the raw ingredients of a cake piled up individually on the plate (panels of chocolate, huckleberries, spongecake bits), but allowed you to combine different flavors together. Want to go back for the tasting menu.

We were a party of 4 and all of us were disappointed in the food and wine list. The Chef definitely uses alot of "foam" on dishes. 2 of us ordered the halibut which was described as being served with roasted brussel sprouts and beets. It would be generous to say that there was 1 tablespoon of brussel sprout leaves and approximately 3 quarter size beets with the halibut. We all ordered a first course. The butter lettuce salad with fried shallots was just that. Only butter lettuce with a few shallots. The wine list is very expensive and does not have any wines under $45.00. It is too bad as the location is wonderful.

My main gripe is with the food quantity. I have NEVER eaten anywhere where the servings are so ridiculously small! The menu calls the Kobe Beef Tartare and the Lamb Sweetbreads which we both ordered "table shares" but what is there to share? When my husband's entree, the $24 Roasted Wild Striped Bass arrived, we couldn't believe our eyes: instead of a decent filet of fish, there was only one third of a normal portion on the plate!!! They adorn their dishes with all kinds of emulsions or foams or even coffee soil (?) but frankly, I find it quite pretentious, and I am European !!! I had really been looking forward to a nice meal in these beautiful surroundings, and I don't need the traditionally huge portions, but this is pushing "minimalism"

I was excited to try this restaurant until we received our first course, which was a shared plate. For the prices they charge their portions are tiny. I've eaten at many high end establishments and am not unfamiliar with paying a premium for smaller portions. However these portions were comically small and my friends and I joked about eating at McDonalds afterward. Not worth the $60/head we paid. The wine list was pricey with little options but ordering bottles that started at $60+. The service was uninviting and pushy as well. Eat elsewhere.

Food was original, tasty and visual beautiful. Love the room - sophisticated but hip, happening but quiet enough to be able to hear. Only downside was the service - not terrible, but not on top of things either. Waited very long for a first hello; several apps and entrees brought to the wrong diner; drinks were brought to our table that no one had ordered; waits were long for service. Just didn't match the level of the food.
