  • "What a delight to find a restaurant capable of rekindling one's love of San Francisco - and Paris! We were greeted warmly, immediately were enchanted by the menu and relished mussels (glorious in several renditions), a comforting lamb daube, duck confit, a swoon-worthy Lyonnaise salad and superb classics (think crème brûlée) and wonderful re-interpretations (a new spin on tarte Tatin). Add an intelligent wine selection and excellent bread with a delicious tapenade and one wanted this to be one's neighborhood go-to bistro. Worthy moving for! The service was warm and friendly, helpful and a brilliant melding of Gallic charm and California ease. We counted ourselves lucky and our guests felt the rarefied good fortune, too. Merci, Papa!"

  • "With the French servers and the food, you can feel like you're in a small bistro in Paris. We've eaten her a number of times, and last night the noise level was almost painful. People were shouting at each other to be heard over the din. But the food....My butter lettuce salad was fresh, crisp and tasty. My mussels Basquaise were fabulous. With pomme frittes to finish them off, it was a treat. My wife had the black cod, and it was excellent too. There is a good choice of wines by the glass, and they pour you a generous glass, that's almost worth the cost. The menu is somewhat limited, but everyone should be able to find something they like. I recommend this restaurant."

  • "Nice ambience, friendly waitstaff, attentive but not pushy. We ordered mussels and steak dishes - nicely done, but we aren't as big garlic fans as the chef is, methinks. Mussels loaded with it (not so unusual), frites sauce with the steak also super-garlic-errific. Tasty, but be prepared to still be tasting it the next day when you wake up. Probably healthy, but not so great if you're looking for sexy-time later. Everything looked super-tasty, though - just check on the garlic quotient of what you order if you aren't a fan. Nice wine by the glass for around $10."

  • "I was ignored for ~10 minutes when I arrived. Had to seat myself. Went for the prix-fixe to enjoy both the mussels and the bouillabaisse. The mussels were, frankly, underwhelming. (My date and I had two different versions, both left me disappointed.) I'm a seafood snob b/c I grew up in coastal Maine. These mussels were tiny and not especially fresh or tasty. The bouillabaisse was ok, but not chock full of goodies. A bit thinner overall than I might have expected for $25. Also, once I step up for a prix-fixe menu, if the fries are really an important addition to the mussels appetizer, as the waiter strongly suggested, they ought to be factored into the price. Finding them added onto was a "gotcha" moment. I won't be back."

  • "This place never disappoints. I am a Potrero local, and whenever I have someone in town to visit, I try to take them by Chez Papa. Food is excellent all around, and service is very attentive. Only downside is its very loud in the main room, which can be a plus or minus depending on the mood you're in."

  • "We celebrated a birthday and felt the food, service, and atmosphere were perfect for a special night out without being fussy. I recommend the mussels mariniere (tender and delicious), beet salad with goat cheese croquets (crunch, then melt in your mouth), cassoulet, baked cod on leaks, and creme brulee. Each was delicious and had wonderful textures. Tables are close together, but the atmosphere was friendly and informal and we didn't feel crowded. The only negative was that it was hard to hear each other over the general noise."

  • "My friend and i hadn't been in ages and since we love Chez Maman we thought we'd bop into Chez Papa as it was a rainy, cold, Sunday night and hence not crowded. I must say I don't understand why they always are crowded after our meal (unless it just happened to be a fluek). We shared the octopus salad, beef tartare, and mussels. The mussels were fine. The others inedible (we didn't make a dent) and I can usually down anything. On top of that I had stomach distress for the next 24 hrs and I know it was from 1 of those dishes. The octopus was mushy (yes, you'd expect me to say rubbery, but no) and the tartare just not good."

  • "A great place to get away from the general hustle and bustle of the SF food scene - it's located in Potrero Hill. Great food choices are always available and each dish is really well made. The bone marrow appetizer is one of my favorites. The lamb for the entre is splendid - with a great sauce that you can dip endless amounts of bread into and the beef shirtribs is incredibly tender. It's a great spot that I visit quite frequently."

  • "I am a regular at Chez Papa as the food is really good, the wine pairing always fit the bill and the attitude lies more on the sunny and happy side of Southern France than your typical Parisian bistro. I highly recommend the mussels, beef tartare and pork. Make sure to order a side of fries, the accompanying aioli sauce is the best in town."

  • "Just don't sit near the door. Because some of the diners can eat outside, the waiters come in and out through the front door, and if it's a breezy night, you'll be blasted by chill air every time the door opens. Other than that, food is tasty and service was excellent."

  • "We had a perfect dinner with casual ambience and excellent service. We enjoyed the pace of the meal and the waiter's reccomendations. We chose the prix fixe menu and each course was delicious. I had the mussels provencale and it was suggested to add in an order of frites( good call). The broth was divine . The lamb stew was my second course and it was also excellent. My husband chose the Lyonnaise salad as a starter. The black cod second was plated so beautifully that he didn't want to disturb the plating design. The taste was fantastic. We ended the meal with each ordering a different dessert( there were 2 on the menu) and sharing. The molten chocolate cake was yummy but my favourite was the creme carmel. A wonderful experinence."

  • "My husband and I ate here for Dine About Town. We both ordered the Prix Fixe menu. The baked escargot was excellent. I really enjoyed the seared ahi salad. My husband had the skewered chicken and we thought it was good. We don't drink much alcohol, but most other tables had wine. We were here for lunch and almost everyone seemed to be over 60 years old. We would have liked to have tried dessert, but we were both too full. The wait staff is very nice."

  • "The restaurant is small, but it knows how to use its space! When we were seated, the hostess offered to check our coats, so we wouldn't have to figure out where to put them. Excellent! Chez Papa Bistrot offers the same prix fixe menu year-round, so even though we dined here for Dine About Town, we can partake of the same deliciousness year round! Mussels, escargot, lamb daube and duck confit -- it was all amazing! Even the fries were just right and lightly salted. The only downside is that it's a little out of the way and about 1.5 miles (and hilly) from the 16th St. BART station."

  • "I have been in SF now going on 6 years and one of the characteristics of a great restaurant is that the food is consistently great every single time no matter how much time has past between visits. I hadn't been to Chez Papa in some time. It was the perfect place to catch up with a friend with great food and good wine. I had the Kobe Beef Tartar and the Braised Short Ribs (i know it's a lot of meat). The tartar was nicely seasoned with a lovely quail egg on time. The short ribs were soft and succulent with a beautiful demi-glaze. Lovely food & wine!"

  • "Have been here several times, for lunch and dinner, and always had very good food. Unfortunately, our experience was just the opposite, with the possible exception of the escargot. The steak tartar in particular was awful. It was a bit better after sending back for a second round. Black cod is my go to fish but this one was ordinary at best. Perhaps this was an outlier but don't think I'll be taking my chances again. Hope this helps stimulate some changes for the better. Roger"

  • "Although the prie fixed meal was a bit pricey than their usual prices, my boyfriend decide we could splurge since it was New Year's Eve. It was nice of the restaurant to call and let us know the price. Each course was delicious starting with the kobe beef mix on top of toast, the duck breast plate heaped with multiple vibrant sauces, and to top it off, the chocolate mousse. The only thing was that the tables are so close together that you could overhear the other tables' conservations. Otherwise it was a great meal!"
