We had a good time for our 1 year
anniversary, the found was delicious!!"

With the French servers and the
food, you can feel like you're in a small bistro in Paris. We've eaten her a number of times, and last night the noise level was almost painful. People were shouting at each other to be heard over the din. But the food....My butter lettuce salad was fresh, crisp and tasty. My mussels Basquaise were fabulous. With pomme frittes to finish them off, it was a treat. My wife had the black cod, and it was excellent too. There is a good choice of wines by the glass, and they pour you a generous glass, that's almost worth the cost. The menu is somewhat limited, but everyone should be able to find something they like. I recommend this restaurant."

Chez Papa continues to be our
favorite SF restaurant. We have never eaten anything that wasn't perfect. We love the casual tres French atmosphere and French waiters. A little bit of Paris on Potrero Hill."

We found this restaurant in a few
guides and were very pleased we chose it. Good French inspired food - and we eat a lot in France! Very busy on our visit - Saturday evening, but very efficient with a good wine list with lots of European wines. An enjoyable experience."

food was cold (tasted like it was
prepared the previous day), service was slow. enough said"

Nice ambience, friendly waitstaff,
attentive but not pushy. We ordered mussels and steak dishes - nicely done, but we aren't as big garlic fans as the chef is, methinks. Mussels loaded with it (not so unusual), frites sauce with the steak also super-garlic-errific. Tasty, but be prepared to still be tasting it the next day when you wake up. Probably healthy, but not so great if you're looking for sexy-time later. Everything looked super-tasty, though - just check on the garlic quotient of what you order if you aren't a fan. Nice wine by the glass for around $10."

I was ignored for ~10 minutes when
I arrived. Had to seat myself. Went for the prix-fixe to enjoy both the mussels and the bouillabaisse. The mussels were, frankly, underwhelming. (My date and I had two different versions, both left me disappointed.) I'm a seafood snob b/c I grew up in coastal Maine. These mussels were tiny and not especially fresh or tasty. The bouillabaisse was ok, but not chock full of goodies. A bit thinner overall than I might have expected for $25. Also, once I step up for a prix-fixe menu, if the fries are really an important addition to the mussels appetizer, as the waiter strongly suggested, they ought to be factored into the price. Finding them added onto was a "gotcha" moment. I won't be back."

What a wonderful restaurant.
Outstanding selection of creative and yummy appetizers and main courses. Very generous appetizer portions. Everything was delicious."
Dined on 3/8/2014
This place never disappoints. I am
a Potrero local, and whenever I have someone in town to visit, I try to take them by Chez Papa. Food is excellent all around, and service is very attentive. Only downside is its very loud in the main room, which can be a plus or minus depending on the mood you're in."
Dined on 1/14/2014
We celebrated a birthday and felt
the food, service, and atmosphere were perfect for a special night out without being fussy. I recommend the mussels mariniere (tender and delicious), beet salad with goat cheese croquets (crunch, then melt in your mouth), cassoulet, baked cod on leaks, and creme brulee. Each was delicious and had wonderful textures. Tables are close together, but the atmosphere was friendly and informal and we didn't feel crowded. The only negative was that it was hard to hear each other over the general noise."
Dined on 3/6/2014
What a lovely evening. The bone
marrow and duck confit were delicious."
Dined on 3/6/2014
My friend and i hadn't been in
ages and since we love Chez Maman we thought we'd bop into Chez Papa as it was a rainy, cold, Sunday night and hence not crowded. I must say I don't understand why they always are crowded after our meal (unless it just happened to be a fluek). We shared the octopus salad, beef tartare, and mussels. The mussels were fine. The others inedible (we didn't make a dent) and I can usually down anything. On top of that I had stomach distress for the next 24 hrs and I know it was from 1 of those dishes. The octopus was mushy (yes, you'd expect me to say rubbery, but no) and the tartare just not good."
Dined on 3/2/2014
I thought the services was very
good, however when I got my fish, I got the black cod and it was a very small portion ( 2-3oz.). I left still hungry. I would like to eat in a cleaner restaurant."
Dined on 3/2/2014
Chez Papa is still a great bistro
after all these years and the food is great. Prices are getting out of the range for frequent visits. But considering how crowded the place was on a Wed. night, they probably don't care."
Dined on 2/26/2014
I've been to Chez Papa Bistrot a
couple times now and really enjoyed the food both times. It located in a quiet Potrero Hill neighborhood and parking is relatively easy to find. The restaurant is small and can get busy at times but the service is pretty good."
Dined on 2/22/2014
A great place to get away from the
general hustle and bustle of the SF food scene - it's located in Potrero Hill. Great food choices are always available and each dish is really well made. The bone marrow appetizer is one of my favorites. The lamb for the entre is splendid - with a great sauce that you can dip endless amounts of bread into and the beef shirtribs is incredibly tender. It's a great spot that I visit quite frequently."
Dined on 2/21/2014
I am a regular at Chez Papa as the
food is really good, the wine pairing always fit the bill and the attitude lies more on the sunny and happy side of Southern France than your typical Parisian bistro. I highly recommend the mussels, beef tartare and pork. Make sure to order a side of fries, the accompanying aioli sauce is the best in town."
Dined on 6/17/2013
Just don't sit near the door.
Because some of the diners can eat outside, the waiters come in and out through the front door, and if it's a breezy night, you'll be blasted by chill air every time the door opens. Other than that, food is tasty and service was excellent."
Dined on 2/15/2014
Unfortunately, the noise and the
cold air from the door opening and closing both rattle around the place, lessening the comfort and ambiance of the environment. The food is excellent: French Comfort Food all the way! It's nice for an occasion, but would never be my go-to eatery, as it is not warm or comfortable enough."

I discovered this wonderful,
authentic Bistro when I first moved to San Francisco and soon after to Potrero Hill. I loved it then and keep coming back for the wonderful food, ambience and terrific staff. It's a real gem among the culinary delights the city has to offer. I'll certainly be back for another Chez Papa experience"

This time around it was really
very loud, but the food is just outstanding here!"

We had a perfect dinner with
casual ambience and excellent service. We enjoyed the pace of the meal and the waiter's reccomendations. We chose the prix fixe menu and each course was delicious. I had the mussels provencale and it was suggested to add in an order of frites( good call). The broth was divine . The lamb stew was my second course and it was also excellent. My husband chose the Lyonnaise salad as a starter. The black cod second was plated so beautifully that he didn't want to disturb the plating design. The taste was fantastic. We ended the meal with each ordering a different dessert( there were 2 on the menu) and sharing. The molten chocolate cake was yummy but my favourite was the creme carmel. A wonderful experinence."

Chez Papa Bistrot is a great place
to dine in the evening. good ambience. Food and service is excellent, a bit noisy though."
Dined on 1/31/2014
This place seems to be very
popular, it was packed on Friday night. Our opinion - decent food, but nothing really special. Service was little slow sometimes. Liked the bouillabaisse we ordered, also bread with olive tapenade was a very nice addition to the meal."
Dined on 1/31/2014
With outstanding service and
superlative food (I'd've given it more stars if I could), this is a wonderful find. I had lunch with a friend and even though the noise level was energetic at times, we had no trouble conversing. Definitely worth another visit!"
Dined on 1/28/2014
Great food and very attentive and
friendly service. They have the timing on the Dine About Town menu down to the minute. We were in and out of there in about an hour for a 3 course meal. It might have felt a little rushed for some people, but we didn't feel like we were being kicked out or anything, just very efficient to get all their reservations in on time."
Dined on 1/24/2014
Still a loud and crowded place
where the food is solid and familiar, but not exciting. I really enjoyed the mussels and salads, and the meat dishes (lamb and steak) good, but not memorable. The frites were shockingly soggy from having seen too much cooking oil. Dessert: same story as mains."
Dined on 1/23/2014
My husband and I ate here for Dine
About Town. We both ordered the Prix Fixe menu. The baked escargot was excellent. I really enjoyed the seared ahi salad. My husband had the skewered chicken and we thought it was good. We don't drink much alcohol, but most other tables had wine. We were here for lunch and almost everyone seemed to be over 60 years old. We would have liked to have tried dessert, but we were both too full. The wait staff is very nice."
Dined on 1/21/2014
We went here after a local
stairway walk. The wait staff was friendly and prompt. The escargot and mussels were delicious. The suggested wine went well with both dishes. I would go here again."
Dined on 1/20/2014
The restaurant is small, but it
knows how to use its space! When we were seated, the hostess offered to check our coats, so we wouldn't have to figure out where to put them. Excellent! Chez Papa Bistrot offers the same prix fixe menu year-round, so even though we dined here for Dine About Town, we can partake of the same deliciousness year round! Mussels, escargot, lamb daube and duck confit -- it was all amazing! Even the fries were just right and lightly salted. The only downside is that it's a little out of the way and about 1.5 miles (and hilly) from the 16th St. BART station."

Another birthday lunch celebration
at Chez Papa! On a good day, you can sit at sidewalk tables and look at downtown SF from the Potrero hill. The food is very good; the service is impeccable. Waitperson was also outstanding as a sommelier in his wine recommendations. Looking forward to going there again and again!"
Dined on 1/13/2014
I have been in SF now going on 6
years and one of the characteristics of a great restaurant is that the food is consistently great every single time no matter how much time has past between visits. I hadn't been to Chez Papa in some time. It was the perfect place to catch up with a friend with great food and good wine. I had the Kobe Beef Tartar and the Braised Short Ribs (i know it's a lot of meat). The tartar was nicely seasoned with a lovely quail egg on time. The short ribs were soft and succulent with a beautiful demi-glaze. Lovely food & wine!"
Dined on 1/17/2014
Have been here several times, for
lunch and dinner, and always had very good food. Unfortunately, our experience was just the opposite, with the possible exception of the escargot. The steak tartar in particular was awful. It was a bit better after sending back for a second round. Black cod is my go to fish but this one was ordinary at best. Perhaps this was an outlier but don't think I'll be taking my chances again. Hope this helps stimulate some changes for the better. Roger"

Although the prie fixed meal was a
bit pricey than their usual prices, my boyfriend decide we could splurge since it was New Year's Eve. It was nice of the restaurant to call and let us know the price. Each course was delicious starting with the kobe beef mix on top of toast, the duck breast plate heaped with multiple vibrant sauces, and to top it off, the chocolate mousse. The only thing was that the tables are so close together that you could overhear the other tables' conservations. Otherwise it was a great meal!"
Dined on 12/31/2013
We were most impressed by the
high-level of service at this restaurant. The owner came over to our table twice to see how the meal was going. When I was brought the wrong order of mussels, he told us we could keep the dish at our table and corrected my order. We will be back!"
Dined on 12/30/2013
We celebrated our 5 year wedding
anniversary with great food and great wine in a great restaurant. Must order the frites!!!"
Dined on 12/29/2013
I made a mistake on my reservation
and the owner was very gracious on the phone (after 2 calls from him asking where I was) in correcting my reservation. I would have understood if he had been angry with me since it was all my fault. Food was very good and serving size was not overwhelming!"
Dined on 12/28/2013
Enjoyed the duck, bouillabaisse,
lamb, cassoulet. We don't salt much so maybe some portions were a little salty for our taste. This local place and should be on regular rotation of neighborhood visits."
Dined on 12/22/2013
Escargot was exquisite; wonderful
garlicky flavor, cooked to perfection. Every course perfectly prepared and timed. A fabulous gastronomic experience. This was a holiday outing with my boss and coworker; we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves."
Dined on 12/12/2013
The service at Chez Papa is
accommodating and efficient. The dessert for my prix fixe was wrapped and in a box without a reminder. The food is okay. We had escargots, mussels marinères, and a bouillabaisse. The escargots were uninteresting, depending almost entirely on garlic for flavor. Too many breadcrumbs, and not hot enough on service. The mussels are fine, and they are a simple dish, which the restaurant serves a few different ways. The bouillabaisse was a different story: it's more a seafood chowder, served in one pot, with the rouille on the side. It is not the two-part bouillabaisse that you might have eaten along the Mediterranean. Just a simple seafood chowder with some lumps of potato."
