A word from Chez Josephine
The last of its kind near 42nd St., Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem. A tribute to legendary Josephine Baker, this Parisian bistro with live music and tantalizing menu exudes theatrical panache. One of New York's most romantic restaurants, a bit of Montmartre on 42nd St., the landmark jewel sparkles with an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. The eclectic menu reinvents the traditional cuisine of the French bistro in an explosion of tantalizing flavor. Jean-Claude and Jarry Baker are your warm and welcoming hosts who treat you as family whether you come before the show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar.

Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung-with every shade of skin on earth and indeed you feelthe magic of Chez Josephine.

This little bistro close to the theaters is perfect for Sunday brunch. It evokes Paris in the twenties as well as the dramatic dancer and allied spy. Was there even a day when the dollar could buy three toothsome courses and a bloody mary for $30?

My boyfriend and I went here after seeing Once. The place was full and they didnt rush us at all. The piano music was absolutely amazing. Staff was very friendly and attentive. The food was delicious and plated well. Excellent choice if you want something a little different and a little more vibrant than your traditional restaurant. We loved it.

Fried chicken was not good - very, very dry. Pork chop was very good. Very uneven in general, but the place is very nice inside and the piano was nice to listen to and the food is reasonable overall. Not sure I would go back.

We love returning to Chez Josephine. We are met warmly by Jean-Claude or Manuel. We are seated away from the music so we can converse. The menu selections are varied and interesting and the waiters will tell you what's best. The dinner was delicious and the desserts a great finish.

My husband and I are frequent theater goers and diners. Over the years we have learned to avoid Times Square restaurants preferring Chelsea, Hell's Kitchen and the Village. Since we were at Theater Row we decided to give Chez Josephine a try. We will definitely be going back the!!! The Food and the ambience were fabulous. The piano player was icing in the cake. We felt as though we were in a Paris bistro. Don't miss this.

After researching Chez on Tripadvisor I was very excited to spend the evening dining here. It was everything I imagined and on top of the amazing food & amazing ambiance, I was lucky enough to have some chats with the owner, who was a sweet and witty man. I felt like a spend 2 hrs in Paris and I would definitely return. I give this beautiful restaurant two kisses! Oh and the piano music made everything very romantic!

Fun restaurant with cozy-romantic ambiance filled with colorful Josephine Baker era posters and murals, red drapes and white clothed tables. Upon arriving our party was each greeted pleasantly by owner/friendly staff. Started with a tasty Bordeaux wine. The French onion soup was terrific with wonderful sweet caramelized onions and just the right amount of seasoning. Next came the veal chop special which was cooked perfectly with an excellent tasty reduction on a bed of asparagus and roasted garlic potato (highly recommend). Finished with "chocolate heaven", a flourless cake with a fantastic chocolate flavor. Live Piano music topped it off. All of us had tasty food and a great time. Not inexpensive but price reflected real value.

The restaurant is like a Parisian restaurant. There was a talented piano player playing the piano the evening we attended.. I ordered the Maryland crab cakes and I was extremely disappointed with them. They tasted like crab cakes you buy at Costco. They were heavily breaded. My dining companion ordered the veal which he thought was decent. He ordered them medium and he thought they were a bit overcooked for medium.

The tables next to the walls were too close together. To sit down on the wall side they had to pull out the table. We felt that we were so close to the tables on each side of us that we were all eating together! The others felt the same. The piano music was nice and the food was average. It was very noisy on a Friday night. We were disappointed.

Chez Josephine is as unique and charming as its famous namesake. If the regular menu lacks coherence, it is because it includes many of Ms. Baker's favorite dishes. Be sure to make reservations as the place gets packed most nights, and always request to sit downstairs.

Our first meal at Chez Josephine was back in the early '90s, way before the wonderful convenience of Open Table! Great place to go before or after a show. Service is quite good--almost exceptional. Food was good as expected. From a service perspective I'm sure my experience was an anomaly based on other reviews, but I was very disappointed from the service. We were greater promptly and seated quickly as well. Once seated I waited close to 15 minuted for someone to come by and ask for drinks. Once that was done, I was asked if I wanted more bread and replied that I had not even received my first serving yet. When the waiter finally arrived (had to be asked for), he did not offer specials; we had to ask if there were any! He was polite but lacking. Appetizer and soup came quickly but an additional 40 minutes plus for main course. Maître d had to come over 3 times to apologize and thank for my patience. Didn't order dessert.
