A word from Chez Josephine
The last of its kind near 42nd St., Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem. A tribute to legendary Josephine Baker, this Parisian bistro with live music and tantalizing menu exudes theatrical panache. One of New York's most romantic restaurants, a bit of Montmartre on 42nd St., the landmark jewel sparkles with an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. The eclectic menu reinvents the traditional cuisine of the French bistro in an explosion of tantalizing flavor. Jean-Claude and Jarry Baker are your warm and welcoming hosts who treat you as family whether you come before the show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar.

Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung-with every shade of skin on earth and indeed you feelthe magic of Chez Josephine.

Absolute pros at the pre-theatre dinner. Waiters all know what is possible in time allotted before curtain. Food is generally good. The crabcakes are excellent! And the decor- truly delightful and from another time and era in the best possible way. Jean-Claude Baker was there making sure that everything ran smoothly. Love this place.

Service was extraordinarily slow. We dined early, 4pm, not many customers, there was a lot of staff around, but they were just STANDING AROUND. Every time we wanted something we had to raise our hands, or yell to the waiters to get their attention.

The title says it all. The restaurant is not for everybody, but it's the best bar none when one is in the mood for a bit of Parisian whimsy. I've always wondered how the owner can keep such good people in the kitchen. I have never, ever been disappointed by a meal there, and many offerings are quite superb. My visit in October found our waiters perfunctory--no charm or finesse, which one expects at this establishment. Plus, the waiters had to be reminded to bring things. And the service was unusually slow. Train those waiters!

What a great place to go pre_theater. We were going to the American Airlines Theater on 42 St. so it was only a short walk. I had seen Chez Josephine ads in theater programs for years and had never tried it. The food was delicious and the service was fine - a bit impersonal- but very professional. The atmosphere is great with interesting art work on the walls. It definitely makes one think of the 1920's and Josephine Baker although probably many younger customers probably never heard of her.

This little bistro close to the theaters is perfect for Sunday brunch. It evokes Paris in the twenties as well as the dramatic dancer and allied spy. Was there even a day when the dollar could buy three toothsome courses and a bloody mary for $30?

My husband and I are frequent theater goers and diners. Over the years we have learned to avoid Times Square restaurants preferring Chelsea, Hell's Kitchen and the Village. Since we were at Theater Row we decided to give Chez Josephine a try. We will definitely be going back the!!! The Food and the ambience were fabulous. The piano player was icing in the cake. We felt as though we were in a Paris bistro. Don't miss this.

After researching Chez on Tripadvisor I was very excited to spend the evening dining here. It was everything I imagined and on top of the amazing food & amazing ambiance, I was lucky enough to have some chats with the owner, who was a sweet and witty man. I felt like a spend 2 hrs in Paris and I would definitely return. I give this beautiful restaurant two kisses! Oh and the piano music made everything very romantic!

Fun restaurant with cozy-romantic ambiance filled with colorful Josephine Baker era posters and murals, red drapes and white clothed tables. Upon arriving our party was each greeted pleasantly by owner/friendly staff. Started with a tasty Bordeaux wine. The French onion soup was terrific with wonderful sweet caramelized onions and just the right amount of seasoning. Next came the veal chop special which was cooked perfectly with an excellent tasty reduction on a bed of asparagus and roasted garlic potato (highly recommend). Finished with "chocolate heaven", a flourless cake with a fantastic chocolate flavor. Live Piano music topped it off. All of us had tasty food and a great time. Not inexpensive but price reflected real value.

The restaurant is like a Parisian restaurant. There was a talented piano player playing the piano the evening we attended.. I ordered the Maryland crab cakes and I was extremely disappointed with them. They tasted like crab cakes you buy at Costco. They were heavily breaded. My dining companion ordered the veal which he thought was decent. He ordered them medium and he thought they were a bit overcooked for medium.

The tables next to the walls were too close together. To sit down on the wall side they had to pull out the table. We felt that we were so close to the tables on each side of us that we were all eating together! The others felt the same. The piano music was nice and the food was average. It was very noisy on a Friday night. We were disappointed.
