A word from Chez Josephine
The last of its kind near 42nd St., Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem. A tribute to legendary Josephine Baker, this Parisian bistro with live music and tantalizing menu exudes theatrical panache. One of New York's most romantic restaurants, a bit of Montmartre on 42nd St., the landmark jewel sparkles with an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. The eclectic menu reinvents the traditional cuisine of the French bistro in an explosion of tantalizing flavor. Jean-Claude and Jarry Baker are your warm and welcoming hosts who treat you as family whether you come before the show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar.

Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung-with every shade of skin on earth and indeed you feelthe magic of Chez Josephine.

Food was good as expected. From a service perspective I'm sure my experience was an anomaly based on other reviews, but I was very disappointed from the service. We were greater promptly and seated quickly as well. Once seated I waited close to 15 minuted for someone to come by and ask for drinks. Once that was done, I was asked if I wanted more bread and replied that I had not even received my first serving yet. When the waiter finally arrived (had to be asked for), he did not offer specials; we had to ask if there were any! He was polite but lacking. Appetizer and soup came quickly but an additional 40 minutes plus for main course. Maître d had to come over 3 times to apologize and thank for my patience. Didn't order dessert.

Chez Josephine has become one of our favorite Theater a District restaurants. A gracious proprietor and excellent wait staff make for an enjoyable experience, heightened by the music. My wife's steak was coked perfectly, and my lobster cassoulet was perfect.

I made a point of visiting Chez Josephine when I learned I was traveling to NYC. I expected it to be nice, but was surprised to find that it was excellent in every way that matters to me. Terrific ambiance, lovely decor, delicious food, impeccable service, friendly and welcoming staff, and reasonable prices considering all of the above. I have had more expensive meals with far less graciousness and warmth. I highly recommend this small gem of a restaurant - clearly a labor of love for its owner Jean-Claude Baker. Wonderful! Wonderful! Wonderful!

Been going here over 20 years! Enjoy the experience every time. Love the piano player...he truly makes the experience special! The good was good but not up to its normal excellence. My husband ordered the fried chicken. He was serviced 2 small pieces. A little steep considering the price. We were shocked at the price of our cocktails...VERY expensive. But all in all we always enjoy the the experience. Its a fun place to go The lobster bisque is delicious. Missed seeing Jean Claude this time around. He does add thr unique flabor of Chez Josephine's!

Being a native New Yorker, I can't believe my husband and I have never dined here before. The atmosphere was as lovely as the nicest restaurant in Paris, and the pianist a definite enhancement. The waitstaff was professional and worked smoothly with each other so that the meal was "orchestrated" in perfect time. Our server, Julio, was a delight, and made certain that we were satisfied with everything; he was well aware that although we had theatre tickets, we wanted to savor each course unhurriedly. My husband's meal of onion soup and filet mignon was exemplary, and he mentioned that it was the finest filet he can remember eating. I enjoyed my scallops, but did not care for the accompaniment. My husband rates the food as "outstanding."

The restaurant looks beautiful but the wait staff was extremely rude and unfriendly. My "seafood omelette" had one piece of crab in it, about the size of a chocolate chip. My friend ordered salmon with couscous - neither had any seasoning or taste. The only bright spot was the dessert, which was delicious. Sadly it was served to us by an extremely grumpy waiter.

Would return again tomorrow if I could. Jean Claude is the consummate host. He greets you as a friend and made us feel like royalty! The service is impeccable, the food is a work of art and a delight to the palate. Always aware that there may be theater following dinner, they strive to make your dining experience delightful and yet get you out on time for the theater, and you never feel rushed. Piano player is an added treat. Escargot is the best we've had; beef wellington was melt in your mouth scrumptious and lobster salad was delicious and prepared so that I could enjoy it without working for it. Chez Josephine is a perfect way to start or end an evening in the city and if you live in the vicinity it would be hard to stay away.

From beginning to end my husband and I had a great experience at this neighborhood gem. We had an early dinner before a play and it was delicious, well paced. We both had from the daily specials. The restaurant is dimly lit which made it an elegant, romantic experience as opposed to a bustling, theatre row eatery. I took my wife to Chez Josephine for our 20th wedding anniversary. We were welcomed at the door by the friendly staff and shown to our table by the piano. The pianist was a very talented bluesy 50's style singer/player which added to the already warm ambiance of the restaurant. Our waiter, Max, was terrific. Our service was outstanding, well timed and the food was first class plus. The extra added touches by the chef, decorating our dessert dishes with "Happy Anniversary" written in chocolate around the rim was very thoughtful and touching. This is a very special restaurant which I would highly recommend for any occasion but especially for those special occasions where you want the absolute best for you and your family and friends.

The onion soup was, as usual, delicious...A yen for fried chicken made me order that iconic dish..What a mistake.... the chicken was dry and difficult to cut....The corn bread, [a French version ?] was in edible as well. Perhaps that entire dish should be retired from the menu, despite its gentle price .
