The last of its kind near 42nd St., Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem. A tribute to legendary Josephine Baker, this Parisian bistro with live music and tantalizing menu exudes theatrical panache.   • "We love Chez Josephine! It was a romantic date night setting and a lovely meal. The French Martini was also delicious! The only downside was the service. Our original waiter kind of disappeared after we ordered dessert, but the staff quickly came to our rescue and brought out our food after we mentioned that we hadn't seen him in awhile. That didn't damper our experience though, we had an amazing night."

  • "I came here for restaurant week. I had Maxim as our waiter. He is most definitely very experiences and very awesome. I have allergies to food and he made sure to inform me and accommodate me as much as he could with the food. My date got the Chilean Sea Bass and well it was amazing even though I ate it after it cooled down a bit. I had the crab tempura and I thought that it was great but I guess I expected them to do more with it. The piano music was very relaxing to listen to and the whole setting was very romantic."

  • "I've come here for years, with friends, by myself. Jean-Claude Baker, owner and remarkable man, goes out of his way to make every guest feel special. Hiss brother Jary, is often the bar keep. The wait staff is very attentive, without being obsequious..no hovering. Food is delicious. If you're going to the theatre, they ensure you get out on time. If you're not, they're happy you can enjoy the evening."

  • "Had a great time there. Chose not to order the Rest. Week menu because we were not that hungry but what we ordered off the menu was very good. The people who sat next to us did order from that and what they ordered looked wonderful. The restaurant has quite a history and hearing about it and seeing all the memorabilia added to the charm. If one is looking for a quiet place for a tete-a-tete, this is not the place unless you wanted to sit way in the back. Guests sit very close to each other but this didn't bother us at all. All in all, it was a pleasure having dinner there."

  • "Went after a Broadway show, was seated right away. The service was excellent, the ambience was nice, except they had a piano player, very close to where we were sitting. The music was good but to loud and we couldn't hear each other speak. I had an Heirloom Tomato salad to start and it was very good. I was disappointed with my salmon entree. It was a generous portion but I didn't enjoy the flavor of the rub they had on it. Overall the restaurant was a little disappointing."

  • "Thank you to the outstanding owners and staff of Chez Josephine for making our early dinner on a busy summer matinee-day such a special one. We had heard wonderful things about the food with its French influences, and all expectations were not only met, but exceeded. I had informed the restaurant via OpenTable email that we had to leave within 2 hours to catch a ferry home, and upon our arrival we were assured our timing would be fine. Dinner was perfectly paced so we enjoyed every course (and bite!) without feeling rushed. There are a lot of fun personalities at Chez Josephine--just sit back and enjoy it all!"

  • "My partner and I returned for another dinner visit to Chez Josephine and the food the service and Joseph at the piano brought us back to the romance of Old New York. The evening became a wonderful experience of three hours. We ate, drank and listened to beautiful live music. We were never rushed, but instead reminded to remain as long as we wished to savor the ambiance. The staff could not have been kinder or more professional and each member of the staff wished us a good night as we left. We love dining at Chez Josephine."

We started with a carrot ginger soup and beet salad. The entree was a pan seared quail. It was all perfectly prepared and excellent. Highly recommend!"

Our menu selections were well served, no issues with quality of food or service. Restaurant showed excellent customer service by serving our dessert with a candle and Happy Birthday spelt out on plate and the pianist rendition of Happy Birthday to You when other diners joined in. My daughter and I intend to return again. Thanks."

  • "From the moment I made this reservation, our experience was outstanding..I asked for a round table for 6 people. We were seated perfectly in the front next to a window. Jean Claude greeted us with warmth and enthusiasm. Our wait staff was impeccable, always anticipating our needs before having to ask. The menu was diverse and everything was prepared with perfection. The ambiance with its french murals…the fabulous piano music playing in the background…the delicious food and the great service…a win win. Ryan our server was extremely accommodating…the escargot delicious. We had the price fixe menu which included salad, entree and dessert. There is so much to choose from! The soft shell crabs were outstanding. We can't rave enough about this wonderful restaurant conveniently located near the theater district. Looking forward to our next visit."

  • "Our experience at Chez Josephine was amazing. I reserved a table for four, through OpenTable, to celebrate my friends' 25th anniversary before attending a 7PM Broadway show on Sunday. Upon entering, we were immediately escorted to a very nice window table that looks out onto 42nd St.. Our waiter was outstanding from beginning to end. He confirmed our theatre plans, recommended great entrees and desserts and was very friendly and attentive. We ordered a variety of appetizers, entrees and desserts, including: Chinese raviolis, shrimp cocktail, duck, pork, shrimp risotto, spaghetti bolognese, white and chocolate mousse and death by chocolate. Every appetizer, entree and dessert was delicious. I highly recommend dinner at Chez Josephine!"

Never rushed, never lagging - their timing is perfect. They do not interrupt conversation; however, if you need anything, they are suddenly right there. Good suggestions and great service. Our food is always perfectly prepared; served hot; and delicious. The old-tiime elegance; relaxed but special atmosphere; and evening entertainment makes this a romantic and comfotable place to share a good meal or even to dine alone."

  • "3 of us came for a pre-theater dinner. We were asked when our curtain was (7pm) when we walked in at 5:30. We ordered and were told by the waiter that we would be out by 6:30, in time to walk over to the theater. The food did not arrive until 6:25! One of us ordered the prix fixe and they brought the dessert out with the main course because that was the only way it could be served. We left half our food and all of the dessert so that we could make the curtain. NO APOLOGY. NO DISCOUNT. WILL NEVER RETURN."

  • "After a Sunday matinee, what a perfect place for an early supper before heading back to New Jersey! Cozy and romantic, we so enjoyed the piano playing old standards, show tunes and some surprises, too. A whole lobster out of the shell arranged artfully atop a bed of greens and sliced avocado was superb, as were the very tender braised lamb shanks with asparagus. We began with lobster bisque and the endive salad with bleu cheese and walnuts, both delightful, and rounded out the meal with their famous lemon tart brûlée. We sipped several cups of coffee to keep listening to the music - we hated to leave!"

  • "A nice convenient place for brunch prior to a matinee, just down the street from theatre companies. Sunday prix fixe offered a nice selection for the price of $19.29, the year Josephine opened her first bistro in Paris. Cozy decor with Parisien influences and artwork and posters of Josephine. Dishes were nicely prepared with adequate portions for a filling, not overly stuffed meal. The spaghetti with meat sauce was very flavorful, the lobster bisque had a wonderful concentrated lobster flavor. Wait staff was very attentive and friendly."

  • "My fiance and I went here for our early anniversary celebration. We were coming to the city to see, "IF/THEN", The first thing the matrie de said to us was what time our show began. I was impressed right away, that they wanted to make sure we finished our meal in time for the show! He took us to the table and that is when the magic began! Our waiter handed our menus to us and explained the specials. All of which sounded heavenly! I had the Lobster Bisque and my better half had the Tomato and Goat cheese appetizer. In one simple word, Glorious! We then had our main course. I had a Braised Lamb Shank and she had Roasted Halibut. The food and service was divine! We later chose to go back for dessert. We can't wait to go back again!"

The crispy oysters were mushy and the steak tartare not very good. The main courses, duck breast and the special fish dish, seared grouper, were cooked perfectly.   • "It is always lovely to be greeted by Jean-Claude the gracious host at Chez Josephine! The food never disappoints. I had Lobster Bisque and a wonderful cold Lobster Salad that was accompanied by fresh crisp greens and vegetables. My friend had Boudin Noir, with Olive-Oil Crushed Potatoes and Apple Compote. We were both very happy with the food and ambiance. This is not my first time there and nor will it be my last."

  • "Piano player helps create a romantic atmosphere. The service was really great. We were 45 minutes late - called to let them know, and they were so accommodating. I had the calves liver, which is generallyn hard to find. It was just okay. It was accompanied by mustard greens which I had never tasted before - and never want to taste again as I don't particularly like vegetables that have the harsh taste of mustard. So it was not a great with the liver."
