A word from Chez Josephine
The last of its kind near 42nd St., Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem. A tribute to legendary Josephine Baker, this Parisian bistro with live music and tantalizing menu exudes theatrical panache. One of New York's most romantic restaurants, a bit of Montmartre on 42nd St., the landmark jewel sparkles with an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. The eclectic menu reinvents the traditional cuisine of the French bistro in an explosion of tantalizing flavor. Jean-Claude and Jarry Baker are your warm and welcoming hosts who treat you as family whether you come before the show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar.

Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung-with every shade of skin on earth and indeed you feelthe magic of Chez Josephine.

Diner Reviews
  • "How nostalgic this place is! A wonderful tribute to Josephine Baker! Black Venus' legacy lives on here. She would be proud! The food, ambiance, artwork, and service were amazing! The staff were complete gentlemen and very complimentary! Jean Claude and the gentleman playing the piano exude class and add the right touch of elegance without being too stuffy! The lobster bisque is delectable and the French toast a must have! I'm so going back to try the Seafood cassoulet the next time I'm in NYC. I can go on and on but I invite you to experience all that is "Chez Josephine" for yourself. You won't be disappointed!"

  • "We went for a pre-theater dinner and got more than we had expected. Chez Josephine has been a standby for us, but this past Saturday we got a table next to the piano. What a treat…terrific food and a two hour feast of Gershwin, Cole Porter and others."

  • "We loved Chez Josephine went for pre-theatre dinner, Lovely food served by a really nice French waiter (our special thanks to him). I had lobster bisque, fillet mignon cooked to perfection and lemon creme brûlée tart for dessert together with a happy birthday candle a lovely touch. Would definitely recommend this restaurant."

  • "Have enjoyed dining in this neighborhood gem for 25 years. The food and ambience are great. The location is terrific for pre-theatre or after-theatre dining. It's romantic and cozy, comfortable and unique. The service is wonderful too. It's a very special place that understand the art of hospitality. Everything is on a very human scale and it has tons of charm."

  • "Chez Josephine is a friendly and fun place to enjoy an evening. A lot of their crowd is pre theater, but we enjoyed it greatly as a place to meet and enjoy the evening together. All of the employees and the pianist were friendly and welcoming. There was no sense of being rushed, just an ambiance for relaxing and enjoying the evening. We ordered off thePice Fixed menu because there were nice choices on it. The full menu offered good options as well, and I would probably order off of it the next time. We would rate the food as very good, but the service as outstanding and atmosphere as energetic and fun."

  • "This is a nice gem. It does not like as inviting from the outside but the inside is charming/eclectic. The lighting is dim with hints of red and pictures of Josephine ( some of her nude). However, the staff and food is superb. The Crab cakes were really good and piano area is nice background music."

  • "I went to Chez Jospehine's with two friends for Sunday brunch. It was one of my friends' birthday. I mentioned this to the person who took my reservation and they certainly made a note of it, because without my asking dessert was served to my friend with a candle, Happy Birthday inscribed in chocolate on the plate, and a live piano rendition of Happy Birthday. Just lovely. And the food was great."

  • "Growing up in France, Josephine Baker was a big icon and I loved all the decor and the artwork on the wall, reminding me of Paris and this period of time. The food was great, but our favorites were: the steak tartare and the lobster bisque! Best lobster bisque ever. Live music added a very nice atmosphere. I will recommend it to my friends when they go to NY."

  • "Reason: Went there for 1 yr anniversary with gf on a weekend. Great atmosphere! Very unique style and ambience. Live music that was a treat. Dress: Dressy Casual. Service: Very very attentative. Greeted at the door and seated right away (reservations needed). Servers came around but did not rush you. Food: Great portion to price ratio. Also, great flavors (sea bass - special item), pork chop (nicely crisp outside and tender inside). I would definitely recommend friends/family to take significant other here for an evening out for dinner or on a special occassion."

  • "Josephine Baker was an extraordinary person. Chez Josephine is a worthy place to celebrate her memory. The memorabilia is exotic, erotic, & chic. The ambiance of the place is like stepping back in time. It is an intimate club that makes you half expect to find Humphrey Bogart as the maître d' with Dooley Wilson or Hoagy Carmichael at the piano. There is live music with songs like "As Time Goes By" & "It Had To Be You." The staff & service made us feel like honored guests in the elegant yet relaxed atmosphere. Chez Josephine is an ideal place to have a romantic dinner. The food is very good with just the right touch of fancy to make it a special dining experience, but not one that will alienate more conventional palates."

  • "Fish special arrived undercooked, returned as a not very fresh and stinky entree. Tiger Shrimp entree was overcooked and devoid of much taste. Waiter was not very attentive. Too many great alternatives in NYC to bother coming back. Save your money…."

  • "What a wonderful dining experience -- from the warmly effusive greeting from owner Jean-Claude to the attentive and capable service all 'round, this was a true 'find' for this New Yorker of 30-plus years. I hadn't been in over 20 years til we popped in a few weeks back for a quick late night post-theater bite, and that whetted my appetite for choosing C.J. for hosting our out of town guests. Glorious decor, over the top in a good way, with the already romantic atmosphere enhanced by the charming live piano music on the grand piano, solid French food all 'round (great steaks! A special that night..), a respectable wine list and fair prices. What more could one ask for? We'll be back!"

  • "From the friendly greeting, to the perfect service to the delicious food I just loved this place. I was there without my sweetheart but I can't wait to go back with him, the ambiance has a very sexy vibe! Thank you Chez Josephine for a very special night!"

  • "We have been going to Chez Josephine for years; a visit to NYC wouldn't be the same without it. Whether pre-theater, post-theater or just for a pleasant dinner and wonderful entertainment, Chez Josephine deserves its reputation as a Broadway institution. The food is reliably good and when schedule is important, you'll be out the door on time. When schedule isn't important, you're welcome to enjoy your dinner, company, and the incomparable atmosphere of this homage to Josephine Baker at as leisurely a pace as you like. There is no host more gracious than Jean-Claude Baker and he and brother Jarry, have made enormous personal investment over three decades to the City, the neighborhood and this fine restaurant. It shows. BRAVO!"

  • "Arrived early but the maitre'd was warm & accommodating. The owner was friendly & very proud of both his Mom & his establishment. The staff knew how to serve & when to clear off. (You don't always get that kind of service.) We had the rack of lamb & the filet mignon cooked the way we asked & very tender. Would definitely return."

  • "We had a great dinner there on a weekday evening. Waiter was funny and efficient, and the food excellent. We ate about 9 PM, but the place started to fill up around 10. Nice scene. Hadn't been there for a while, but it hasn't lost it's charm."

  • "My friend and I had dinner at Chez Josephine on a Sunday before the theatre, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. The decor was elegant, the food was good, the prices were reasonable, and the service was exceptional. I look forward dining here again the next time I'm in New York. I highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "Came here after a show. Very beautiful inside, piano playing and 5 star service. Tables are close together but for some reason it didn't feel that way. The good is very very good and is brought to your table at just the right time. Nothing is rushed ( unless you are in a rush, in which case they can accommodate you). I would definitely return and definitely recommend."

  • "The back story of this restaurant being started by one if Josephine Baker's adopted children is charming and the decor is an exuberant homage to her. The food is reliably delicious and the piano music at Sunday brunch is a delight - so much more pleasant than bangy Muzak."
