A word from Chez Josephine
The last of its kind near 42nd St., Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem. A tribute to legendary Josephine Baker, this Parisian bistro with live music and tantalizing menu exudes theatrical panache. One of New York's most romantic restaurants, a bit of Montmartre on 42nd St., the landmark jewel sparkles with an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. The eclectic menu reinvents the traditional cuisine of the French bistro in an explosion of tantalizing flavor. Jean-Claude and Jarry Baker are your warm and welcoming hosts who treat you as family whether you come before the show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar.

Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung-with every shade of skin on earth and indeed you feelthe magic of Chez Josephine.

  • "I don't know how French our meal was but it was very good. The environment is beautiful."

  • "An experience in ambience! Piano man is incredible!"

  • "3 of us came for a pre-theater dinner. We were asked when our curtain was (7pm) when we walked in at 5:30. We ordered and were told by the waiter that we would be out by 6:30, in time to walk over to the theater. The food did not arrive until 6:25! One of us ordered the prix fixe and they brought the dessert out with the main course because that was the only way it could be served. We left half our food and all of the dessert so that we could make the curtain. NO APOLOGY. NO DISCOUNT. WILL NEVER RETURN."

  • "A nice convenient place for brunch prior to a matinee, just down the street from theatre companies. Sunday prix fixe offered a nice selection for the price of $19.29, the year Josephine opened her first bistro in Paris. Cozy decor with Parisien influences and artwork and posters of Josephine. Dishes were nicely prepared with adequate portions for a filling, not overly stuffed meal. The spaghetti with meat sauce was very flavorful, the lobster bisque had a wonderful concentrated lobster flavor. Wait staff was very attentive and friendly."

  • "After a Sunday matinee, what a perfect place for an early supper before heading back to New Jersey! Cozy and romantic, we so enjoyed the piano playing old standards, show tunes and some surprises, too. A whole lobster out of the shell arranged artfully atop a bed of greens and sliced avocado was superb, as were the very tender braised lamb shanks with asparagus. We began with lobster bisque and the endive salad with bleu cheese and walnuts, both delightful, and rounded out the meal with their famous lemon tart brûlée. We sipped several cups of coffee to keep listening to the music - we hated to leave!"

  • "My fiance and I went here for our early anniversary celebration. We were coming to the city to see, "IF/THEN", The first thing the matrie de said to us was what time our show began. I was impressed right away, that they wanted to make sure we finished our meal in time for the show! He took us to the table and that is when the magic began! Our waiter handed our menus to us and explained the specials. All of which sounded heavenly! I had the Lobster Bisque and my better half had the Tomato and Goat cheese appetizer. In one simple word, Glorious! We then had our main course. I had a Braised Lamb Shank and she had Roasted Halibut. The food and service was divine! We later chose to go back for dessert. We can't wait to go back again!"

  • "While I normally would not take my kids out for a meal at this type of restaurant, we were on vacation in New York so the five of us decided to give Chez Josephine a try for our "big night out." The food was amazing and the service was excellent. It was no problem to have our eleven year old daughters and fourteen year old son along. They all found something they liked and while it was expensive, it was worth it!"

  • "Great service .. Ask for Maxim... delicious food and a phenomenal piano player..Joe... Now one of our favorites in the city. Don't miss this one"

  • "Piano player helps create a romantic atmosphere. The service was really great. We were 45 minutes late - called to let them know, and they were so accommodating. I had the calves liver, which is generallyn hard to find. It was just okay. It was accompanied by mustard greens which I had never tasted before - and never want to taste again as I don't particularly like vegetables that have the harsh taste of mustard. So it was not a great with the liver."

  • "I was very pleases with the food, the service and the ambiance. There was a pianist playing lovely music. I look forward to dining there again."

  • "First time at this restaurant. The owner and staff made you feel right at home. The piano player was perfect for the surroundings. Appetizers were very disappointing. The crispy oysters were mushy and the steak tartare not very good. The main courses, duck breast and the special fish dish, seared grouper, were cooked perfectly. The ambiance for pre-theatre was perfect."

  • "A while since we were here but it's still all we remember. A place with real personality and friendliness that is often lacking in New York today. We were welcomed like old friends and thought the food and wine excellent and good value. A place everyone should visit at least once. Great after-theatre spot."

  • "Not the best food we've ever had (but very good). When you factor together the food, the personal welcome from the owner, our warm and efficient server, the decor, the ambiance, the beautiful piano music, the whole New York vibe….we had an amazing experience. Highly recommended. We had an unforgettable evening."

  • "This is one of my favorite restaurants. Good food, live music, wonderful ambiance. I missed Jean Clause - he was in the Hamptons - but it is a wonderful place for meeting people from NJ who are parking across the street or at the PA."

  • "I never miss a chance to book a table whenever I am in NYC. This restaurant has very much a local vibe and does not feel "touristy" at all. The food is delicious and the menu has a great variety ranging from haute cuisine to comfort food. The service is usually impeccable, although, this time around it was quite slow (1 hour before getting our main course). Unfortunately this meant we had to forgo desert since we had a show. I would still go back since this was the only negative experience in over 10 years of going there...everyone has a n off day every once in a while."

  • "We entertained clients at Chez Josephine and it was perfect. The food was very tasty and the service was excellent. Panio player was lovely also."

  • "We have going to this restaurant frequently. The food is consistently good and the service is prompt. My only criticism is with the service: there are occasions when waiters have been intrusive. Rather than wait for a pause in the conversation or waiting to be acknowledged by the people at the table, the waiter abruptly interrupts the conversation to ask if everything is alright or to take the order. That's our only criticism of an otherwise wonderful place."
    Dined on 6/29/2014
  • "As always the food and service are wonderful. We also got to the theatre easily."

  • "We went to chez Josephine after a Saturday matinee. As always, Jean Claude was the most gracious and charming of any host in the city. The soft piano music was perfect, the food great and the ambiance incomparable. This is the best place in the city! I wish there was a Jean-Claude Baker at every restaurant here. It's just simply a wonderful, warm, inviting experience, whether it's your first visit or your fiftieth."

  • "As usual, the food, ambiance and music all combined for a great after theater experience. Make sure Chez Jospehine is on your list of place to visit in NYC. Wish it was in our neighborhoo because it would be our neighborhood haunt."

  • "We've dined here before and loved it. This time was terrible. Service was awful and food mediocre. Piano player and Maître D were the only redeeming factors. We are going to give them one more chance."
    Dined on 6/27/2014
  • "Had dinner here before a play and it was fantastic! The restaurant is rather small, but they make up for it with an energetic pianist and wonderful decorations. Got in and out in less than an hour, and made it to the play with plenty of time to spare."

  • "We loved the ambience. The piano player was fantastic. Food was great. Overall a very memorable evening. Thank you."

  • "This tribute to the adopted Mom of the owner (Josephine Baker) oozes with atmosphere, from the huge paintings to the ever-present pianist. It does a rapid-paced pre-theater business, and the food choices, whether from the three course prix fixe or a la carte menu, are all delicious. The location, west of 9th avenue, is ideal for the off-Broadway theaters on that block of 42nd street, but a little out of the way for most other theaters. The full house empties at 7:45, and then the pace is more relaxed. We love this place."

  • "A great restaurant for a Pre-Theater meal. Service was wonderful. Waiter asked if we were going to a show and made sure we were out on time. Food could not have been better. We will definitely return."

  • "We love this place! The ambience, food and service are outstanding, detail is always on display. from the moment you enter, the staff treats you like a guest in their home. they always ask if your attending the theater, So your courses arrive in a timely manner. Ttis was our eighth dining indulgence and as great if not better than the previous seven. The food is classic Nuvo French with delicious sauce reduction, and well balanced marinates which are so very pleasing to the palate. The wonderful ambience completes the theater experience."

  • "If you want to feel you are in Paris for a night, then Chez Josephine is the restaurant for you. The atmosphere is romantic, the music provided by the pianist and clarinet conveyed the feel of a 19th century Parisian bistro. The staff and maître d' were courteous and attentive. And, of course, the food, drinks and service were simple and excellent. What else is to say except, we will return!"

  • "Our waiter was not as friendly as most we experienced in NYC. Food was just ok nothing spectacular for the price. Very interesting decor i.e. red Christmas balls hanging from chandelier, red velvet walls, red lampshades."

  • "We were four women heading to the theatre for a show at 7. We arrived just before 5 which allowed us to enjoy a cocktail, appetizer and main course. Our waiter couldn't have been more attentive or knowledgable about the menu. The duck breast with wild rice was delicious and my friends raved about the crab cakes. There was also a pre fixe menu with excellent selections for $38. The dessert menu looked great but we decided there wasn't enough time to enjoy them. I would recommend this restaurant for an enjoyable pre theatre meal. Leave plenty of time to enjoy!"
