A word from Chez Josephine
The last of its kind near 42nd St., Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem. A tribute to legendary Josephine Baker, this Parisian bistro with live music and tantalizing menu exudes theatrical panache. One of New York's most romantic restaurants, a bit of Montmartre on 42nd St., the landmark jewel sparkles with an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. The eclectic menu reinvents the traditional cuisine of the French bistro in an explosion of tantalizing flavor. Jean-Claude and Jarry Baker are your warm and welcoming hosts who treat you as family whether you come before the show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar.

Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung-with every shade of skin on earth and indeed you feelthe magic of Chez Josephine.

Diner Reviews
  • "Beautiful restaurant with great history. The ambiance was superb. We came in for dessert after a Broadway show at the Amsterdam Theatre down the street. The desserts were delicious, but portions were very small for the price."

  • "This is restaurant that will never disappoint and definitely worth visiting. Exceptional service and staff, very good food and presentation, good décor and piano music. I cannot comment on the wine list as I am not a drinker, but both the salmon and skirt steak were very well done."

  • "Everyone in Chez provides outstanding, attentive service! If you have a show to see, they are sure to advise you of the best time to order and the best time to walk to the theatre. The location, right behind Port Authority, is so convenient and just a few blocks from Broadway Theatres and next door to great off Broadway Theatres. Food is fantastic with an eclectic selection of dishes from Josephine Baker's Southern favorites to Salmon grilled to perfection and more. The piano entertainment enhances the experience, so rare to find and so enjoyable. It is ALWAYS an enjoyable event to go to Chez. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!"

  • "We went for the fixed price brunch. The lobster bisque was very good as was the eggs benedict and profiterole. Service was attentive, it was clean, and the live piano was beautiful."

  • " Chez Josephine NEVER disappoints. Food, service and ambiance were spectacular. Have been coming here more than 15 years; would never be in NYC without going to Chez Josephine."

  • "Always fun to go here. Esp. like the piano player and the history of it. Food is sporadic.....some things i.e. the onion soup are very good and others i.e. the boullibaise (sp.?) are just o.k. Service is excellent."

  • "Great spot for fantastic French fare, and a great wine list. Live piano music made for a lovely ambiance."

  • "We went to Josephine's before show on Saturday night. Had 5:30 reservations were seated immediately and asked what time the show was. We had enough time to enjoy our meal and we were not rushed, We both had the duck it was very good."

  • "Went during Restaurant Week and had their specials, food was absolutely decadent! Loved the skirt steak which tasted more like filet mignon and the soft-shelled crab dish was great as well. Food is presented very beautiful. Atmosphere is terrific with the addition of the piano bar. Jean-Claude is a most welcoming host!"

  • "Food is awesome but waiting time is a little long, probably due to restaurant week. Unlimited bread will make sure you are full ,especially when you have french cuisine"

  • "Super service. Weird decoration. Wine selection is poor for a French restaurant. Typical French food. Really good. Beef was fantastic. Fries with them were a block of salt. Weird looking place. Live piano player is outstanding. Worth going back just for him"

  • "Fun! Very friendly staff, delicious food. My favorite is the lamb."
    Dined on 8/12/2014
  • "Came here for the restaurant week special which was not so special. The cost of the three courses I liked was almost equal to the off the menu price so I saved my money and calories by ordering off the regular menu."
    Dined on 8/12/2014
  • "We have not been disappointed in our three visits to Chez Josephine. Always outstanding service, very pleasant live piano music, excellent cuisine. A bit pricey (the wine is definitely overpriced) but in line with the typical cost of high-quality dining in the theater district."

  • "Always a pleasure to dine at Chez Josephine, Excellent service, food and ambiance."

  • "Celebrated multi family birthdays in the upstairs dining room and a great time was had by all. I am sorry that the waiter didn't introduce himself, or I didn't ask, as he was charming and professional as we were a group of 7 chatty people. The drinks and dinners were all met with overwhelming praise as my concern (never having eaten there before) was that this might be a tourist trap and would be overpriced for the meal but it wasn't and the evening was a great success, including the birthday dessert with candle and song."

  • "Favorite restaurant by far - service is always top-notch (Jack at the bar, Julio, Dennis, Jean Claude, of course, and everyone else) and incomparable; the food exquisite and consistent; and the live piano ranging from jazz, Gershwin, Porter, and Sarah McLachlan. True dining institution for many reasons."

  • "The air conditioned was a little too cold, we had to chance to a table which was not so good as the first one to have a nicer temperature."

  • "Luckily I arrived early because even though my assistant made reservations on OpenTable and I called to confirm the day before, there was no record of my reservation. However, Jean Claude found me and my guest a nice table (Jackie O's, I was told). I requested on the phone and again in person that two copies of his bio of Josephine Baker be brought to the table. I asked JC if he would come by and autograph them and he assured me he would. When I requested the books after the main course I was told that JC had left for the night and no mention of my request had been made. Disappointed, I bought one copy of the book for my guest. I already had an unautographed copied from Amazon for $4.50. Still it's a special place and I will return, wiser."

  • "Intimate, caters to theater goers. Superb atmosphere, ambiance, and service. Upon arrival they ask if you are attending the theater and time of performance to insure that you will not be rushed with your meal. Wonderful live piano music was an added treat."

  • "Although the restaurant was a bit difficult to find (it's small facade is dark and passed unnoticed at first), it had great ambiance, nice piano and good food, with some of the most traditional French dishes you would normally expect, but some novelties as well. Great end of night for us!"

  • "I have been here several times and each time is wonderful from the piano player to the fabric on the walls to the paintings of Josephine baker in her traditional costume - this is a little taste of the left bank of the 1920's"

  • "Love it. A true gem. Not disappointed at all. It is always a joy to be there. Waiter was not overbearing and thanks for letting me ask for the bill and not have it shoved in my face like other restaurants."

  • "Thank you for a wonderful time. The service was great and the food even better. My favorite place for a pre theatre bite."
    Dined on 8/7/2014
  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We had the soft shell crabs, which may have been the best we ever had. Service was excellent. They knew we were going to a show, and they were awesome in getting us our food quickly without rushing. The piano player was a very nice addition. Will be going back."

  • "The decor is amazing, and the pianist works hard. I have all of the old vinyl Josephine Baker, and heard this place had more of that zest. Alas the food lacked zing, presentation, and flavour generally. Regulars are treated differently - as one would expect; but it is hard to get anyone to show more than perfunctory interest in you as a client - so how would you become a regular. The next to me table broke a glass on my foot, but while it was assiduously cleared away from the floor I ended up with some in my shoe - a lesson that one needs to make more of a fuss and be more careful. This was the most exciting part of the evening - I could not see bringing anyone here to eat. A drink yes, drink in the decor - you bet."

  • "Restaurant Week menu was perfect, served by wonderful staff. Delicious and we were sitting next to the piano player who never stopped and the music was great! Perfect meal, perfect location, perfect day/nite in the City. Escargot was buttery and delicious, soft shell crab was yummy and dessert was light, couldn't ask for more!"

  • "Went here for dinner at 5:30, and let the waiter (who was super friendly) know that we had theater tickets at 7:30. Bill still hadn't arrived at 7:10, so we ended up being late for curtain. Ambiance was wonderful - live pianist, old-world romantic Paris feel. Food left a bit to be desired - bolognese was great, but the sorbet was half melted when it came out, and the other dessert was just okay. One of my party's wine had all that gunk in the bottom of the glass, and it was kinda gross. Overall, wouldn't recommend it for dinner. But might be a fun date night if you're in the area"

  • "Food was very good, and we loved the atmosphere. We ended up going to Chez Josephine after another area French restaurant called us to cancel our reservation because they were not going to be open! (even tho' they were taking reservations here on OpenTable). The service was exceptional, live piano was absolutely wonderful. We'd go back in a heartbeat."

  • "Chez Josephine has not allowed the current trend for sterile decor to influence them. The restaurant is filled with color, posters and art, much of which features Josephine Baker. An accomplished pianist accompanies your meal and the food is well prepared and tastefully presented. Jean Claude Baker is a consummate host and his wait staff are attentive without being intrusive. We have been many times and have never been disappointed."

  • "The pianist's repertoire was wonderful! What a delicious and fun place for a couple or small group up to eight. We will definitely be back soon. I can't believe it's been hiding from us this long. A great time!"

  • "We went before the theater and was not disappointed. Not only do they ensure you make your show on time, they are on top of your needs, and the food is amazing. We sat right next to the piano, which was a little noisy at times, but the atmosphere was romantic. The tables are close together, but the noise level within the restaurant does not make it uncomfortably close. A mid-town must go!"

  • "Wonderful service makes the restaurant unique. It feels incredibly welcoming. They make you feel like a million dollars. They are so warm and friendly you do not want to leave. The piano man added to the wonderful ambience. I love going to Chez Josephine. The food is fresh and delicious."

  • "This restaurant is a gem for the West Side of 42nd street. Has all the attributes of the East Side. Waiters were outstanding...knew when to ask and when to leave you alone. Went with my young neice who enjoyed it as much as I did. I real find for the theater district, very genuine French menu. Will definitely return."

  • "Cons: Was here for restaurant week, the food was good but when I go back I look forward to the other options on the regular menu. The softshell crab was a bit difficult to eat and the steak did not look great. My boyfriend thought his food was just ok. A little disappointed with the $19 glass of wine! But that's to be expected during restaurant week. PROS: I'm not a huge escargot fan but I REALLY liked it here. The coconut panna cotta was amazing! The atmosphere was incredible!! Very classic romantic moulin rouge feel! Live pianist in the back playing classic music from what sounded like earlier than the 40's!! Jean Claude (Owner) got us a drink at the bar when we walked and was SUPER FRIENDLY! LOVE HIM! Will be back for sure!"
