A word from Chez Josephine
The last of its kind near 42nd St., Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem. A tribute to legendary Josephine Baker, this Parisian bistro with live music and tantalizing menu exudes theatrical panache. One of New York's most romantic restaurants, a bit of Montmartre on 42nd St., the landmark jewel sparkles with an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. The eclectic menu reinvents the traditional cuisine of the French bistro in an explosion of tantalizing flavor. Jean-Claude and Jarry Baker are your warm and welcoming hosts who treat you as family whether you come before the show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar.

Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung-with every shade of skin on earth and indeed you feelthe magic of Chez Josephine.

Chez Josephine is as unique and charming as its famous namesake. If the regular menu lacks coherence, it is because it includes many of Ms. Baker's favorite dishes. Be sure to make reservations as the place gets packed most nights, and always request to sit downstairs.

Our first meal at Chez Josephine was back in the early '90s, way before the wonderful convenience of Open Table! It continues to be one of our favorite restaurants in NYC where we often dine between a matinee & evening performance, never leaving 42nd Street! Merci beaucoup to all at "the home" of Josephine Baker for always making us feel welcome!

Very enjoyable experience. We ordered from the pre-fixe menu before a show. The waiter was very helpful as one of our party is allergic to milk and cheese. He offered alternatives. The dinners were very good and guest loved the interior of the restaurant.

Our waiter Maxim and other servers were excellent, and the pianist could swing. I recommend the spaghetti bolognese, and my wife enjoyed the butternut squash soup special as well as the salmon. The decor evokes a Parisian theme of a long gone era with unity and extravagance. We'll surely be back.

Great restaurant and a great tribute to Josephine Baker. Run by her son and other very professional Maître’ d and bartender. Waitstaff is well versed and well trained. Perfect French and wonderful food. Very boutique and very cozy. They cater to the theatre crowd and seem to thrive on its existence. WHich menas you are not treated like a tourist but a welcomed guest. The duck is wonderful and steak hearty. The wine list is developed and complements the food menu.

Food was good as expected. From a service perspective I'm sure my experience was an anomaly based on other reviews, but I was very disappointed from the service. We were greater promptly and seated quickly as well. Once seated I waited close to 15 minuted for someone to come by and ask for drinks. Once that was done, I was asked if I wanted more bread and replied that I had not even received my first serving yet. When the waiter finally arrived (had to be asked for), he did not offer specials; we had to ask if there were any! He was polite but lacking. Appetizer and soup came quickly but an additional 40 minutes plus for main course. Maître d had to come over 3 times to apologize and thank for my patience. Didn't order dessert.

I made a point of visiting Chez Josephine when I learned I was traveling to NYC. I expected it to be nice, but was surprised to find that it was excellent in every way that matters to me. Terrific ambiance, lovely decor, delicious food, impeccable service, friendly and welcoming staff, and reasonable prices considering all of the above. I have had more expensive meals with far less graciousness and warmth. I highly recommend this small gem of a restaurant - clearly a labor of love for its owner Jean-Claude Baker. Wonderful! Wonderful! Wonderful!

Been going here over 20 years! Enjoy the experience every time. Love the piano player...he truly makes the experience special! The good was good but not up to its normal excellence. My husband ordered the fried chicken. He was serviced 2 small pieces. A little steep considering the price. We were shocked at the price of our cocktails...VERY expensive. But all in all we always enjoy the the experience. Its a fun place to go The lobster bisque is delicious. Missed seeing Jean Claude this time around. Being a native New Yorker, I can't believe my husband and I have never dined here before. The atmosphere was as lovely as the nicest restaurant in Paris, and the pianist a definite enhancement. The waitstaff was professional and worked smoothly with each other so that the meal was "orchestrated" in perfect time. Our server, Julio, was a delight, and made certain that we were satisfied with everything; he was well aware that although we had theatre tickets, we wanted to savor each course unhurriedly. My husband's meal of onion soup and filet mignon was exemplary, and he mentioned that it was the finest filet he can remember eating. I enjoyed my scallops, but did not care for the accompaniment. My husband rates the food as "outstanding."

The restaurant looks beautiful but the wait staff was extremely rude and unfriendly. My "seafood omelette" had one piece of crab in it, about the size of a chocolate chip. My friend ordered salmon with couscous - neither had any seasoning or taste. The only bright spot was the dessert, which was delicious. Sadly it was served to us by an extremely grumpy waiter.
