A word from Chez Josephine
The last of its kind near 42nd St., Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem. A tribute to legendary Josephine Baker, this Parisian bistro with live music and tantalizing menu exudes theatrical panache. One of New York's most romantic restaurants, a bit of Montmartre on 42nd St., the landmark jewel sparkles with an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. The eclectic menu reinvents the traditional cuisine of the French bistro in an explosion of tantalizing flavor. Jean-Claude and Jarry Baker are your warm and welcoming hosts who treat you as family whether you come before the show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar.

Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung-with every shade of skin on earth and indeed you feelthe magic of Chez Josephine.

  • "Was a fabulous evening. Some of us were visiting from Chicago, some of us are local New Yorkers and Chez Josephine was a perfect evening for our family. Wait staff were friendly, patient and very attentive to our group of 12. Food was delicious. And we loved the piano player! Would highly recommend your restaurant. We will be back !"

  • "Another great meal at our special neighborhood restaurant. Jean-Claude always makes the experience wonderful though the entire staff is solid. We love the excellent service and reliable food offerings. The live piano music is also a nice plus in the evenings. Just a great place to soak in the atmosphere minus the stuffiness."

  • "It's not surprising that this restaurant, a block away from Madame Tussaud's on 42nd Street, is such a tourist trap. You should expect to enjoy the tacky decor and the piano music, but to be disappointed by the food and gouged by the prices. "

  • "Convenient to theaters, staff will get you out on time; excellent food; fun live piano; a little crowded And noisy."

  • "We were impressed with Chez Josephine's on many levels. The service was outstanding and the food was absolutely delicious! We were sure about the closeness of the tables, but I understand why they found it necessary to have the seating in that manner. They opened at 5 and was filled before 6 and having people seated so closely turned out to be wonderful. We will definitely dine there again."

  • "How nostalgic this place is! A wonderful tribute to Josephine Baker! Black Venus' legacy lives on here. She would be proud! The food, ambiance, artwork, and service were amazing! The staff were complete gentlemen and very complimentary! Jean Claude and the gentleman playing the piano exude class and add the right touch of elegance without being too stuffy! The lobster bisque is delectable and the French toast a must have! I'm so going back to try the Seafood cassoulet the next time I'm in NYC. I can go on and on but I invite you to experience all that is "Chez Josephine" for yourself. You won't be disappointed!"

  • "NYC is overwhelming with so many great restaurants to try. I looked at the usual review websites, TripAdvisor, OpenTable and Yelp etc. and finally chose Chez Josephine. It was just off Time Square, and was very charming inside. Live but not too loud music. Great service and the food was excellent. I had steak tartar and a veal loin special, both well prepared. My husband had two specials, scallops and a fish dish. He loved them both. We had the front table in the window which made for nice people watching, even with the rain. Overall, we would and have recommended Chez Josephine to others."

  • "We went for a pre-theater dinner and got more than we had expected. Chez Josephine has been a standby for us, but this past Saturday we got a table next to the piano. What a treat…terrific food and a two hour feast of Gershwin, Cole Porter and others."

I had lobster bisque, fillet mignon cooked to perfection and lemon creme brûlée tart for dessert together with a happy birthday candle a lovely touch. Would definitely recommend this restaurant."

  • "Have enjoyed dining in this neighborhood gem for 25 years. The food and ambience are great. The location is terrific for pre-theatre or after-theatre dining. It's romantic and cozy, comfortable and unique. The service is wonderful too. It's a very special place that understand the art of hospitality. Everything is on a very human scale and it has tons of charm."

  • "Chez Josephine is a friendly and fun place to enjoy an evening. A lot of their crowd is pre theater, but we enjoyed it greatly as a place to meet and enjoy the evening together. All of the employees and the pianist were friendly and welcoming. There was no sense of being rushed, just an ambiance for relaxing and enjoying the evening. We ordered off thePice Fixed menu because there were nice choices on it. The full menu offered good options as well, and I would probably order off of it the next time. We would rate the food as very good, but the service as outstanding and atmosphere as energetic and fun."

  • "This is a nice gem. It does not like as inviting from the outside but the inside is charming/eclectic. The lighting is dim with hints of red and pictures of Josephine ( some of her nude). However, the staff and food is superb. The Crab cakes were really good and piano area is nice background music."

  • "I went to Chez Jospehine's with two friends for Sunday brunch. It was one of my friends' birthday. I mentioned this to the person who took my reservation and they certainly made a note of it, because without my asking dessert was served to my friend with a candle, Happy Birthday inscribed in chocolate on the plate, and a live piano rendition of Happy Birthday. Just lovely. And the food was great."

  • "Growing up in France, Josephine Baker was a big icon and I loved all the decor and the artwork on the wall, reminding me of Paris and this period of time. The food was great, but our favorites were: the steak tartare and the lobster bisque! Best lobster bisque ever. Live music added a very nice atmosphere. I will recommend it to my friends when they go to NY."

  • "Reason: Went there for 1 yr anniversary with gf on a weekend. Great atmosphere! Very unique style and ambience. Live music that was a treat. Dress: Dressy Casual. Service: Very very attentative. Greeted at the door and seated right away (reservations needed). Servers came around but did not rush you. Food: Great portion to price ratio. Also, great flavors (sea bass - special item), pork chop (nicely crisp outside and tender inside). I would definitely recommend friends/family to take significant other here for an evening out for dinner or on a special occassion."

  • "Good food and a French speaker waiter made it more special. Music was great. Candle light, romantic, but a bit not enought to confortably read the menu!"

  • "Josephine Baker was an extraordinary person. Chez Josephine is a worthy place to celebrate her memory. The memorabilia is exotic, erotic, & chic. The ambiance of the place is like stepping back in time. It is an intimate club that makes you half expect to find Humphrey Bogart as the maître d' with Dooley Wilson or Hoagy Carmichael at the piano. There is live music with songs like "As Time Goes By" & "It Had To Be You." The staff & service made us feel like honored guests in the elegant yet relaxed atmosphere. Chez Josephine is an ideal place to have a romantic dinner. The food is very good with just the right touch of fancy to make it a special dining experience, but not one that will alienate more conventional palates."

  • "Fish special arrived undercooked, returned as a not very fresh and stinky entree. Tiger Shrimp entree was overcooked and devoid of much taste. Waiter was not very attentive. Too many great alternatives in NYC to bother coming back. Save your money…."

  • "What a wonderful dining experience -- from the warmly effusive greeting from owner Jean-Claude to the attentive and capable service all 'round, this was a true 'find' for this New Yorker of 30-plus years. I hadn't been in over 20 years til we popped in a few weeks back for a quick late night post-theater bite, and that whetted my appetite for choosing C.J. for hosting our out of town guests. Glorious decor, over the top in a good way, with the already romantic atmosphere enhanced by the charming live piano music on the grand piano, solid French food all 'round (great steaks! A special that night..), a respectable wine list and fair prices. What more could one ask for? We'll be back!"
