A word from Chez Josephine
The last of its kind near 42nd St., Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem. A tribute to legendary Josephine Baker, this Parisian bistro with live music and tantalizing menu exudes theatrical panache. One of New York's most romantic restaurants, a bit of Montmartre on 42nd St., the landmark jewel sparkles with an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. The eclectic menu reinvents the traditional cuisine of the French bistro in an explosion of tantalizing flavor. Jean-Claude and Jarry Baker are your warm and welcoming hosts who treat you as family whether you come before the show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar.

Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung-with every shade of skin on earth and indeed you feelthe magic of Chez Josephine.

Love the rather eclectic ambiance of this Josephine Baker themed neighborhood gem. Had the Lobster Salad special (really delicious), and love the Jazz music entertainment. Don't be turned off by the slightly off the beaten path location between 9th and 10th, it is incredibly convenient to Times Square and the Theater District. I highly recommend as a great mix of good food, value, and fun friendly atmosphere.

We traditionally celebrate mutual birthdays here. It is a consist & enjoyable experience. We are never rushed through our brunch. The only issue this trip was one of our party's French toast was badly burned and our drinks were very pricey & contained very little alcohol. But we will go back as the place is charming.

Chez Josephine was an excellent choice for a NYC visit. The atmosphere was lovely with the piano playing for dinner. The service was excellent and the food amazing. The desserts (chocolate mousse and a flourless chocolate cake) were incredible and worth going back for. Jean-Claude Baker provided a wonderful welcome and our server was attentive.

The staff was attentive and the food was superb. the piano playing and the décor add to the warm inviting feeling. Jean-Claude was delighted to hear about our recent trip to Chateau Milandes, the former home of Josephine Baker in France. We will definitely return in the near future.

We ate here last night. Pre-theatre. The restaurant has a great atmosphere. Then owner Jean Claude was there and the service was very attentive. The only issue we had was the food itself. The Lobster Bisque was on the bland side. The off menu red snapper special was even worse. The skin was soft and couldn't be cut through. It should've been crispy. An d the fish itself wasnt seasonsed well. Served over a very basic truffle mash potatoes and grilled asparagus and an underwhelming ver blanc - for a $38 entree - I was expecting more. Another memeber of my party was served a dry overcooked pork chop with "potatoes au gratin" which tasted like plain potatoes. Unimpressed.

I usually love Chez Josephine's. I come in whenever I'm in the city. Sunday I had five friends with me for dinner and I have to say Chez Josephine had a bad night. Not only did they bring the wrong entree to one of my friends TWICE (they never did get their fried chicken) they absolutely incinerated my favorite duck breast. Someone should go to jail. To add insult to the injury, the waiter apologized and promised to remove the charge for the missing chicken dinner from our bill. He failed to do as promised. My friend picked up the tab and paid for the undelivered dinner rather than invest more time in seeking satisfaction. I'll likely be back but I doubt anyone else in my party will give them another chance.

After going to a early showing of Motown the musical we went to Chez. My wife and I enjoyed ourselves. The food was plentiful and fresh as always. The wine was tasty, but I mostly had tea. While some waiters are better than others, there are no bad waiters at Chez. The service is always wonderful. If I had one last meal to eat (before going to heaven) I would eat at Chez and listen to the wonderful piano player all night.

Chez Josephine is always a pre-theatre staple when I visit NYC. you can count on timely service, getting in and out in an hour if needs be, friendly wait staff and warm welcome from Jean-Claude and food that is consistently good and sometimes amazing. This visit we had Chinese ravioli, flavorful, could have been a bit hotter; crab cakes, good consistency nice flavor and not an overpowering sauce; lobster salad which I found a bit bland. The choux puffs brought on arrival are always good. I would prefer the rolls warm, but they are always fresh.

Chez Josephine is certainly an excellent choice for pre-theater dinners in the off-broadway district along 42nd Street, but it's much more than that. It's clearly dedicated to Josephine Baker by one of her owner-sons, with artwork and an atmosphere appropriate for her milieu. The food is well prepared and, in some dishes, inspired. There is live piano most nights, but when entering you are given a choice of near the piano or a table more conducive to conversation. The entire staff are friendly and efficient, with the bartenders wishing you well as you walk by. In summary, a great choice for pre-theater, but also a great choice for a romantic dinner out.

Delightful decor...they ask if you have theatre and the time of the curtain. And then accommodate you. There is a pre-fixe menu; however, we ordered from the a la carte and had the most delicious liver seared to our specifications (medium rare). A very nice wine list and good desserts. AND, to make it a special treat...a pianist playing standards from the "American song book"...a treat to hear As Time Goes By in the background.
