Diner Reviews
  • "The food was delicious and uncomplicated. The wine list is short, but has many good bottles to choose from. Great service."

  • "We were looking for a spot to fine before the Bulls game. Saw Chez Joel on Chicago's Best and decided to give it a try. Food was very good. Everything cooked to perfection. Great service and lovely bottle of champagne to go with our meal. Great experience and looking forward to returning again soon. Prices are very reasonable for the quality of food offered."

  • "one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. The waiter service: the ambiance everything about it was perfect for a date night."

  • "My wife and I enjoyed the excellent food from the mushroom soup and beet salad to the bouillabaisse and filet mignon. Dessert was also wonderful (crème brulee and almond gateau.) Service was very good, ambiance made us feel we were back in Paris. A real gem."

  • "A comfortable small French spot on Italian Taylor street. Had an excellent filet mignon. Husband wishes he had ordered mine. He had other steak on menu which was just average. The brie appetizer was just ok. Crème brûlée very good. Nice lighting. Easy to converse quietly even after a big group came in. Very pleasant."

  • "Chez Joel is a great dining experience. The food was amazing, service great, and the ambience was great! We had been there 3 times before-this by far was the best!"

  • "Mussels were outstanding . . as was the Pate! Beef was perfectly done. Would recommend for good french cuisine"

  • "What is there to say, but that the food, service, and ambience are very good to excellent?--This is a French bistro *par excellence*--a wonderful place to eat."

  • "Food was excellent as always. But service left a bit wanting. Our server seemed to forget about us for oh, about 20 minutes or so. At first I thought he was being sensitive to our "catching up" with each other, but then....when he was buzzing around tables adjacent, didn't know what to make of it. I did toast my friend's bday, which led to an unsolicited celebratory dessert, so he gets props for that. But overall, the service was not what I have had on previous visits. Again, food was EXCELLENT."

  • "We have been frequent diners at Chez Joel and were never disappointed in the food quality or service. Last Tuesday the noise level was abnormally high as a large group of diners were extremely loud, an unfortunate thing that is out of the control of the restaurant."

  • "Reasonable pricing, good food, cozy atmosphere. Menu has a nice variety for all tastes."

  • "My husband took me to Chez Joel on the weeknight of my birthday. Surprisingly got to speak some French with the host, wait staff were polite and helpful. We ordered the scallops (like eating delicious clouds), the broccoli puree (decent), the salmon (damn good) and the ravioli au courge (so delicious we had to send our compliments to the chef twice before leaving). Complimentary birthday glass of ice cream and strawberries - a simple and kind gesture."

  • "Chez Joel's never fails to please. We went here for dinner on Valentine's Day. There were two seating times but the later time was booked. We ended up at the 5:00 seating, early but still romantic. The tables were set beautifully with tiny hearts scattered over the tablecloths. They had a special Valentines menu with different choices but all we're enticing. They even had a special cocktail menu which we also sampled. As usual everything was delicious. The staff is attentive without being intrusive, and the owners are always pleasant and go out of their way to make each visit enjoyable. Each female guest was given a rose when leaving. We love this place, especially in summer when the lovely patio is open. Can't wait for that!"

  • "I cannot say enough about Chez Joel. The food was wonderful, the service was the best I have had in a very long time, and the pricing was very reasonable for this kind of experience. Chez Joel is at the top of my recent finds in Chicago and I will be returning as often as possible. Absolutely wonderful experience. My wife is vegetarian and I am an alpha carnivore. It is hard to find places where we both have a truly fantastic experience. Chez Joel definitely worked in that regard the Risotto was amazing for her and I of course had a steak and frites. We paired the cheese plate which was wonderful with the Semillon it was perfect. I can't think of a better place for "date night"."

  • "Afficianados of low key French bistros will be happy with Cez Joel. Those who don't have a lot of experience with French bistros will probably want to know that the atmosphere is classy and intimate... a good place for quiet conversations over some very well prepared standards of French cuisine. Good place for a casual (but classy) meal, a date, or renewing acquaintance with an old friend from out of town."

  • "I checked out this spot with my sisters for Restaurant Week. The food was amazing and the options are varied enough that we could be could be daring or safe as ventured into the French menu. The waiter was helpful and patient with us as we made our selections. It is a bit pricey for my everyday, but I will add it to my list for a fancier evening. The ambience was vibrant, which I love and in Little Italy, which is a nice change-up from the many North Side restaurants."

  • "It's now become a tradition for my boyfriend and I to go to Chez Joel for our Valentine's day. The place was booked for Valentine's day two weeks in advance and so we settled to go there the next day. The food is amazing and the desserts are to die for. We also love the atmosphere, the cozy feeling, and again the deserts. The staff is friendly and attentive and we'll definitely go back for more celebrations. I'm on a vegetarian + seafood kick this year and I found plenty of delicious options. My boyfriend, a carnivore had the filet and love it."

  • "My partner and I dined on Valentines day and left stuffed, thoroughly impressed, and a little buzzed. Everything was wonderful and perfect. From the wine to the dessert it was just an extremely special night. Aside from the over-the-top holiday decor, it was an evening I would love to relive."

  • "The food is very good here. Well prepared dishes with that French twist that makes it unique but not overdone. The duck was really good and juicy. Salmon was awesome and escargot was great. For French food I would definitely go here again. Ambiance was really nice too. What you would expect from French bistro. Classy is a simple and tasteful way."

  • "Chez Joel is a real gem. The restaurant reminds you of a real French Bistro. The food was outstanding. From the imaginative salads to the Cornish hen and lemon sole - every bite was tasty. The wine list is well thought out and we selected a very nice one which we enjoyed the entire night. Service was excellent and we were not rushed. We will return."

  • "We have been wanting to go to Chez Joel and finally found the right time. We went early on a Saturday night and were only the second table seated in the whole restaurant. Within 30 minutes, however, nearly every table was full. We ordered two appetizers--calamari and escargot --and they were both very good. For our entrees we shared a filet mignon and the asparagus risotto. It was simple straightforward preparation and we could not have been happier. We added on the pommes frites and I would go back if only for them! They were delicious. Finally, we finished off our meal with a perfectly prepared creme brulee. A very nice evening and a very nice meal."

  • "I've been coming here for years but haven't been back in about 9 months. Glad to see that standards have been maintained. Coq au vin was delicious as was my friend's lamb shank. Wine list is classic french and very good value either by the glass or bottle. Always enjoy this restaurant and look forward to warmer weather when the back patio is open."

  • "My friend and I had the most wonderful dinner in the Heart of Chicago's Little Italy! Who would guess amongst the Italian restaurants that there would be a quaint French restaurant! Escargot, Salmon, and the most delectable Creme Brûlée was slowly devoured to save every flavor."

  • "I used to come here quite often for many years and it was nice to return. We all enjoyed the fresh, crusty and chewy french bread, for starters. Presentation of salad and soup was very nice. Entree presentation also very nice - food had wonderful flavors, cooked to our request, and generous! All in all, we all enjoyed ourselves very much!"

  • "With so many new restaurants to try, I had not been to Chez Joel in several years. I went back on a snowy night and loved the warm, comfortable atmosphere, great service and great French cuisine. A good Cote du Rhone and lamb shank entree made for the perfect winter dinner!!!"

  • "My husband and I honeymooned in Paris. We now live in University Commons, so we were delighted to discover our little taste of France in walkind distance. We come at least once a year (usually on our anniversary) and pretend everyone around us is speaking French. Laaaugh. Great doppeleganger for ambiance and some menu items...escargot, duck, etc"

I took my parents who are from out of town and are major foodies and they loved every bite. The experience was one we will always remember. Thank you for the food and fun!"

  • "Philip prvided excellent service. Chez Joel never disappoints. Lovely dimmed evening ambience. The side salad was my appetizer. Grilled calamari and steamed green beans served as my entree. The apple marzipan puff pastry tart was dessert. Calamari was a bit tough, the meal was very good. The husband enjoyed calamari as an appetizer followed by the duck breast and leg entree. He had the almond gateau for dessert. When making our reservation, I mentioned that dinner was to celebrate our 32nd anniversary when making the reservation, and they brought us complementary toasting flutes filled with champagne to have with dessert. It was a lovely surprise! Philip provided very good service, unobtrusive yet attentive."
