Legendary Chez Jay, established 1959, is a Santa Monica Historical Landmark located on Ocean Avenue across from the Pier. Known for its steaks, fresh seafood, generous drinks and comfortable atmosphere, Chez Jay is one of the best celebrity hideaway taverns in all LA.   • "I've been coming to Chez Jay's since 1962 or 1963 and hasn't changed a bit since then. It's difficult to write a review because I don't come here for the food but because it's one of the last neighborhood old-time places in Santa Monica and because it has nostalgic value for me. The food is just OK - butter steak I ordered had way too much gristle, potato that was supposed to be baked was micro-waved. Service, however, was really good as was my mojito."

Wishe they had some less expensive bottles of wine, but c'est la vie. Two of us (both had steak) and 1 bottle of wine. $90+"

Eclectic, local crowd comprised of all ages. Service was excellent, food was very good. Love the character of the place. Would definitely recommend it and will be back."

The server actually dropped my steak on the table and then served it to me "It's OK because it fell on the menu" I didn't care I just wanted to eat and get out of there. Everything is bacon, meat, butter and more bacon. Just not good quality in any way."

We had a blast, the food was good, and the service was excellent. With our party of 10, I was surprised that our diner went so smoothly. Michael, one of the co-owners, spent some time with us telling us stories about famous guests at Chez Jay. He made our evening even more fun. A local couple was having dinner in one of the booths, and they were very interested in asking how we even found the restaurant. They were so welcoming and made us feel at home in "their" local place. Michael even has a friend who's daughter recently graduated from Auburn University!"

  • "Chez Jay reminds me of an old, comfortable blanket--not in best looking shape, but does the job. We went there for lunch, so cannot comment on night scene. It has a 70's look, complete with vinyl tablecloth, diner-type seating and sawdust on the floor. But if you are not not pernickity, you will come away with a wholesome culinary experience. I ordered sole and my wife ordered salmon and both were fresh, perfectly grilled and tasty. Chez Jay has been around for a long time and I am glad it is in our neighborhood. Will definitely try it out for dinner."

Chez Jay is known for many things, but probably the two most prominent features are its friendly atmosphere and service, and its good food. Anyone and everyone is made to feel welcome for dining or those just in for a cocktail or glass of wine. Classic seafood, steaks and chops are served with recipes that rekindle fond memories of just great food. Chez Jay is a local favorite and has been in business for more than 50 years."
