  • "This was one of the BEST dining experiences my husband and I have had in New Jersey!"

  • "We came here as a gift for my daughters graduation. She has been taking french in school and wanted to go to a french restaurant. We didn't want to travel to the city but wanted not only great food but an overall authentic french experience. She was very impressed as we were also. The waiter was wonderful food was excellent atmosphere great as well. We all had something different duck, pork, salmon, vegetarian meal, each dish was wonderful! The only complaint was from my younger daughter who would have liked to have a chocolate dessert but it wasn't on the menu. If it wasn't so expensive we would defiantly come back on more than only special occasions."

  • "Lives up to its reputation as a top restaurant on NJ. The pork chops were tender with a wonderful flavor. The soufflé for dessert was light and airy. It was $300 (with tip) for the two of us including two appetizers, two entrees and two desserts and coffee. Pricey but excellent food and service."

  • "The experience at Chez Catherine felt like being welcomed into an old friend's home for a classic French dinner. The food was traditional and well executed and the service was warm and formal, yet relaxed at the same time. I would recommend this restaurant for a romantic or family dinner where you just want to experience classic French food and service."

  • "There are only a few fine French restaurants locally and Chez Catherine is one of the best. Great wine list...speak to Didier about wine and try the tasting menu!! Especially the cheese plate....."

  • "First time here. Booked it as a special place to celebrate a birthday and was not disappointed. Food and service are bith first rate."

  • "My meal was delish.. I would recommend the 4 course meal - the 3 course didn't feel like enough food- even at $68 a person. The waiter was super friendly. It is expensive so much more of a special occasion place than every sat. night."

  • "We had a prix-fixe lunch at Chez Catherine on a weekday. What a lovely restaurant on a main thoroughfare, but quiet inside. We selected PEI mussels, country pate, mixed grilled fish and hanger steak. My husband loved the mussels and hanger steak. I liked the the pâte and fish. Everything was well-prepared without being fussy. For dessert we had panna cotta ( the creamiest and best we ever had) and yummy sorbet of strawberry, raspberry, mango, and passionfruit. The server was terrific - charming, amusing, and French! We hope to return for dinner, when we can sample more dishes."

  • "our first time to chez catherine. loved the cicadas on the tables, the smallish room, but plenty of privacy between tables. the waiter was amusing and very competent. the prix fixe choices were different from each other so there was a distinct variety. every course was delicious and a good sized portion. excellent restaurant."

  • "I really wanted to like Chez Catherine b/c it was a special occasion, and I wanted the evening to feel very special. I feel a little disappointed. The food wasn't bad, but was served luke warm? How was it even possible if it was just prepared? The mushroom soup that I ordered lacked any taste whatsoever. Mussels were very good. Servings of Foie Gras and Rack of Lamb were laughable. They were not bad, but at the exuberant price they charge for every dish, I didn't expect to have such tiniest portions that I returned home hungry!!! It was very quiet, because only 3 other tables were occupied on a Thursday night. That should have been my first warning sign. "

  • "We have been going to Chez Catherine for years. The food, service and ambiance are fantastic. Classic French dining at it's best. Great wine list. Why go to NYC when you can come here?"

  • "I decided to take my wife to Chez Catherine for her birthday. A horrible night- weather wise. (pouring freezing rain) We were met at the door with a warm Bonjour! We were led to our table right away. This restaurant is small with maybe a maximum of ten or eleven tables. Our cocktails were great. We had two appetizers, but we split each of them between us. The first was mussels in a white buttery cream sauce-Fantastic. The second appetizer was scallops shrimp and crab meat on a crepe - even better, My wife had the duck breast and I had the rabbit - a first for me. Both were very good. We wrapped this meal up by sharing a gigantic soufflé with a creamy sauce. Super. All in all - a Very good Night!"

  • "We had a very good time. Definately a friendly place with good authentic French food. They told me that if I give them 72 hours notice they could fix kidneys for me. Obviously they don't often carry such a dish on the menu given its lack of popularity. But it is rare you find an restuarant that will do that for a customer. The owners are very family oriented in their service and customers keep coming back. An outstanding experience."

  • "Traditional French ishes with a modern, light touch. Beautiful on plate presentation. Quiet, attentive service with nothing overlooked. Small, attractively appointed dining room. Knowledgable wine selection, reasonably priced. Proporietor always on hand. One goes away feeling well satisfied."

  • "A lovely venue for a special meal. The dover sole is sublime....Impeccable service.....We will be back.........."

  • "This was an off night. Food was not as good as always, as for example, overcooked beef. On the weekend it is more expensive than during the week when the place is more relaxed and the food seems to be better. It is definitely pricey on the weekend."

  • "Excellent food, very knowledgeable staff. An exceptional experience."

  • "A small but excellent place with unexcelled friendly service. The food was very well prepared, flavorful, with tableside carving of the rack of boar that I ordered. However, the menu could use some updating. While classic French, it seemed a bit "old." And the price was a bit high - not outrageous, but high."

  • "Excellent French Gem! The proprietor is truly a delight, going out of his way to make things right. Very good food. Overall, top-of-the-line New Jersey Restaurant."

  • "We had our very own, virtually private, Valentine's Dinner a day later - why fight the crowds at Chez Catherine? - and, as usual, it was a very special occasion. The cuisine, the service, the ambiance, the ever-charming Host, Didier and his extraordinary Maitre D', Stephan, all combine to make and sustain Chez Catherine to be the culinary diamond that it is. If you want your children to be acquainted with the more civilized ways of the world, start treating them to Chez Catherine when you can."

  • "We were disappointed with the speed of the food service. We were rushed through 6 courses in under 1 hour!!! This was very disappointing since this was a "special event"--Valentine's Day."
    Dined on 2/14/2012
  • "The tasting menu was superb, from start to finish. Crab bisque was amazing. Desserts also were sublime. The service was paced just right, so we weren't rushed but also didn't drag out for hours. We can't wait to go back and experience the regular menu. Loved the friendly staff."

  • "A good friend reccomended very good French food. Staff French, a little more relaxed then Lorraines not as serious but wonderful service. Almost a tye with Lorraines but because the distance is further then Lorranines for us I have to make them second. tuff choice to compare the two.. either choice for special occassion you can not go wrong."

  • "I thought Chez Catherine was a great representation of French cuisine. My girlfriend and I went their and had an incredible time. Not only was the food fantastic and unique but, the servers were incredible. I believe it was the owner in particular who was so great. He really provided such a welcoming atmosphere and interacted with us in a very friendly and sincere manner. The restaurant itself inside is very pleasing to the eye and comforting. Definitely an all-around great experience. If you love food or are just looking for a nice place to spend an evening/night I would have to say that Chez Catherine in Westfield, NJ is a fine choice to say the least."

  • "A Westfield gem for over 25 years. Proprietors Didier and Edith continue to maintain the highest standards of French cuisine in a tough economic environment. Manhattan quality with suburban convenience."
    Dined on 12/15/2011
  • "Chez Catherine is a bit kitschy inside; very country French in decor and the owners suitably eccentric and absent-minded, albeit very warm & welcoming. The food more than makes up for any quirks of presentation. Escargot and fois gras to start... excellent. My scallops in black truffle sauce were perfectly cooked and seasoned, and my husband's Dover sole was buttery and delicious. My creme brulee for dessert was classically, perfectly French. Throughout we maintained a light banter with our charming, zany server and an interesting dialog about the wines with the proprietors. We'll go back for certain!"

  • "We have been patrons for about 25 years and still maintain that Chez Cathrine is the premiere French restaurant in New Jersey. Chef Reycraft and host/owner Didier Jouvet are the ultimate in their respective positions. This is a venue NOT TO BE MISSED if you care about excellent food, ambiance, service and the experience of fine dining. Sheldon and Barbara Roskin Scotch Plains,NJ"
