They were so pleased with the experience, they booked another reservation for mid April for a special occasion. This is a fine French restaurant but it is OUR neighborhood gem!!"

  • "So many don't know about this fantastic culinary delight so we try to enjoy Chef Phillippe's amazing food whenever we can. He has a fantastic range of dishes but I often get the beef bourgionne. Have also had the kobe beef which is spectacular. We always get the escargots as the olive garlic sauce is mop-up-with bread delicious. Save room for dessert. Chef has added some more approachable. California wine, for those who aren't as adventuresome, but we always try a French wine - chef is happy to help advise you at any price point you wish. The patio is a lovely spot as well."

  • "Maybe they just had an off night, or we were there too late (after 8 on a Wed.). That said, a good portion of our dishes were moderate at best. There were definitely incredible bright moments - the mushroom soup was amazing; the lobster, too; and the creme brûlée and Ile flottante. Problem was, my wonderful mushroom soup was balanced by my friend's horrible onion soup, my friend's lobster wasn't enough to make up for the lackluster steaks or chicken, and even the dessert was marred by dust-like profiteroles filled with ice cream rather than an actual cream which might have at least masked the flavorless shells. All in all, some bright gemstones, and their French Fantasy cocktails are amazing, but the rest is not worth the $30-$35 per plate."

Staff are knowledgeable and recommend food with wine pairings. Setting is intimate and charming. Parking can be difficult as the restaurant competes with other businesses and restaurants in a suburban setting."

  • "My husband had a wonderful dinner celebrating his birthday. We ate in the enclosed area next to some heaters; it was very comfortable and had a feeling of being in a special place. We started out with two flutes of Roederer champagne. The first course was Salade Maraichere et Chaud Chevre; our main courses were Boeuf Bourguignon and a Kobe beef filet; we shared a Crème Brulee for dessert. All of the food was excellent and we think this was the best meal we had ever experienced at Chevalier."

  • "We chose this restaurant for Valentines celebration, but not until the day after. My wife had always wanted to try it and another couple joined us. We brought a bottle of our own wine, and they waived the corkage because we ordered a wine from the list. The wine was recommended by the server and was delightful. Everyone's entree was delicious, as were the to-die-for French fries. The only disappointment were the salads we ordered. They were small and tasteless. All in all a terrific experience."

  • "Tres delicious! We have been going to Chevalier since it first opened. Our favorite dish is Moules and Philippe prepares it with a delicious, rich broth. The pomme frites are crisp and light. Add the salad with the goat cheese and that's all one needs. His desserts are also authentically French and prepared perfectly. We are always transported back to France when we are in this place. We will keep going back as long as Philippe is there--Il est tres charmant aussi."

  • "I think the pricing (fixed at $119 each) is pretty high. We had a reservation for 7:30pm but didn't end up getting seated until 8!!! FOR 30 MINUTES they left us standing by the entrance way without even apologizing or offering a glass a wine while waiting. I find that to be absolutely unacceptable in ANY restaurant. The waitress was good and the dishes were timed well. The food was good. For $50-$75 each it would have been worth it. Because of the late seating we weren't able to finish our so we had to rush through the meat dish (veal?). Our dessert is in a box in our fridge - but it's only one dessert and I'm thinking for the price we should both have had dessert. All in all an incredibly disappointing experience that cost us $325."

Great prix fixe menu and also specials of the day that are tempting. Very good wine list with French and California wines, many available by the glass. What more could you want from neighborhood restaurant? Will return."

  • "Have dined at Chevalier many times and have had memorable evenings with friends, good wine, food and ambiance. My spouse has to work on Valentines day so we made an early date. We arrived on time for our reservation, but had to wait a while to be seated. Kind of the tone for the rest of the evening. French waiter was hurried as he had many large parties all being seated at the same time and our tables were the farthest out from the kitchen. Asked for a wine, he said there were out and he immediately went to the vintage, not the varietal. Appetizers came out and plates came out later when we were almost done. Food was not up to par with past experiences, meat was tough, and the sole was out flavored by the sauce. value vs cost - no"

  • "We began with cognac sidecars mixed by our perfectly attentive service person Nick, who contributed wonderfully to the enjoyment of the evening. The cognac was as smooth and favorful as wine. The crabmeat and avocado compote appetizer was a destination dish!! It is impossible to describe how favorable, fresh, and succulent it was. Incredible! We had salmon with beurre blanc sauce and pork loin medallions, paired with an '85 Margaux that we had brought, which Nick decanted perfectly. The braised chard with smoked pork was another destination dish. The evening was comfortably elegant, leisurely, and delicious. At all times the ambience and service were gracious and the noise level conversational on a Saturday evening. Highly Recommend"

  • "Eaten here many times before. The dining room is very cozy, which is part of the attraction. I made a reservation, and when we showed up we were seated outside in a plastic tent, with heaters. Of course, half my face was too hot and half was too cold. I had no idea that was a possibility when I made the reservation, given that it was 40 degrees out. Not the ambience I was looking for. If I had been warned this was a possibility, I would simply have chosen to spend my money somewhere nicer."

  • "Chevalier is our families go to for special occasions. It is liking going to France with out the plane ticket. The table next to us was filled with two elegant couples from Paris. That says it all to me.. If a French restaurant is frequented by chic Parisians then it is the best. The chef comes out at least twice during your meal to check on your experience. I am fortunate enough to have been brought up going to San Francisco for dinner and that was always important to my parents that the chef took pride in his work and connected with his guest. The Canard a la orange was spectacular. The Risotto was so delicious that I had to fight to keep my table mates from consuming it! Lovely experience all the way around! Thank you Chevalier!"

  • "On a cold night we sat outside surrounded by heaters and the setting was very comfortable. The waiter was very helpful and attentive. I had rack of lamb and my companion had the salmon. It was delicious. We shared a bottle of wine moderately priced and it was as the waiter recommended very good. We met the chef and he was helpful in making our choices. This restaurant is in a small shopping mall in Lafayette. If you blinked you would pass it. Once in the restaurant the mall is forgotten and a very positive experience begins."

  • "I would not recommend this venue for big holiday's such as New Year's Eve or Valentine's Day. The prix fix menu and wine pairings for December 31st were well conceived, however execution of the food left a lot to be desired. The oyster's Rockefeller were cold and there should have been two per person; the filet of sole was overcooked (probably re-heated several times), somewhat mushy and almost too much; the venison was on the tough side and over sauced. The best course was the champenoise soup with caviar. On the positive side, I thought all of the wine pairings were well thought out and complemented each course quite nicely, although the total tab for three people, including gratuity, came to $750 dollars - quite pricey for Lafayette!"

  • "This was our first visit to Chevalier Restaurant but it certainly won't be our last. The atmosphere was upscale, yet cozy and romantic. The service was exceptional, beginning with the greeting at our table by the Chef/Owner. We were drawn by the online menu AND the desserts (few do a Grand Marnier Souffle anymore...and this one was of excellent size and taste). The entire menu is classic French. The presentations were extraordinary. Almost too lovely to eat! But, the taste was outstanding. The entire dining experience was like a giant present to be savored with appreciation. The daily specials were very tempting and did not disappoint. The extensive wine list provided many excellent choices. We will return often."

  • "Don't judge the book by the cover. Hidden in a tiny strip mall, Chevalier Restaurant will not disappoint foodies. New Year's Eve dinner was a pre fixe 6 course meal to die for. The service was wonderful, they even modified the Filet de Sole Waleska for my husband who is allergic to lobster (poor baby). They didn't skimp either, they took out the lobster medallion and substituted another cream sauce over the dish, most other restaurants would have just taken out the lobster and served it plain or worse, use the same sauce (that had some traces of lobster in it) on the dish, but not here. They were on top of it. We also had the wine pairing with the meal as well, and the choices were spot on. We had a wonderful experience,"

The sea bass was could perfectly while the scallops were slightly overcooked and tasted as though they had been frozen, then thawed. The wine list was okay but I expect a little better in California. They did ensure some good French wines were there! Staff was friendly."

  • "Last Tuesday evening I reserved a table for 8 for a celebratory dinner. The food and service were excellent as always. Philippe took special care of us and even took our food orders and served as our sommelier! My friends were impressed with "my place". Le Chevalier is always worth a nearly endless trip on 13 and througfh the Caldecott Tunnel. I am a foodie and love visiting and eating in France. The food at Le Chevalier is the most authentic without the California style American additions ( good but not French)"

  • "Good food, but was not "wowed." Parking lot totally inadequate. Not good for a special date if raining. We took our own wine and I was a little surprised that the waitress did not even look at it before opening - sometimes older bottles need a little extra care in handling. Online menu is not kept up to date. I was disappointed that I was not able to order something I was hoping to try. A side dish we ordered never made it to the table. In spite of my complaints, we had an enjoyable evening and I never felt rushed by the wait staff ( a pet peeve of mine) - so that was a big plus. They just need a little more attention to detail to get another star from me. My husband seemed more "wowed" by the food - he never offered me a bite."

  • "This superb five star french restaurant exceeded every expectation. Don't let the exterior (located in a strip mall) dissuade you as there is a gastronomic oasis hidden inside. The food is incredible in flavor & quality, and the service was impeccable. It would be worth the drive from San Francisco as Chevalier rivals the best that the city offers. Only regret is not trying it sooner."
