A word from Cheval Bistro
Cheval Bistro has introduced to the Old Pasadena dining scene the unique beauty of traditional French bistro fare. The dark wood paneling sets the tone for the warmly-lit, remarkably comfortable interior. The sprawling antique bar dispenses vintage cocktails, single malt scotches, and a wide selection of French and California wines by the bottle and glass.

Experience the taste of France that is not to be missed. With a broad menu consisting of classic bistro fare such as Steak Frites, Duck Confit and Coq au Vin, Cheval Bistro brings you an authentic French "comfort food" experience that guests new to French cuisine, as well as seasoned gastronomical Francophiles will appreciate.

Diner Reviews
  • "We a party of 5 professional LA women looking for a dining experience centrally located on a Saturday evening. Service was lacking and left us not sure we would return. The front of the house not supporting the restaurant. Technically the waitress had to do too much, and she was not properly supported. Too many people going by, but not working as a team. There were enough "warm bodies" just no focus on customer service. She seemed to be ~on her own."

  • "Firts time to this restaurant since the renovation, it was my birthday and they treated me like a king! Food was outstanding as well as the service."

  • "My husband and I just celebrated our 20th anniversary there and were very pleased with the meal, beginning to end. Nice french ambiance, very sweet and attentive waiters, delicious cocktails, a serving pace that felt just right, and perfectly cooked and seasoned food. Can't recommend it enough, really, though it's not cheap! Without wine, about $150 for two, from cocktails through dessert."

  • "With another couple for a special occasion. A beautiful restaurant. We lingered over drinks for an hour without any harassment from the staff. Dinner was delicious. Again, sat around afterwards with coffee and dessert for quite some time. Waitress was attentive but allowed us to sit, talk and enjoy."

  • "I am glad I have experienced dining at Cheval Bistro. I do have a few comments: I was surprised no one answered my initial phone calls to make my reservation. When i have told others about this first impression I get surprised reactions from others as well. I can justify your need to have your staff help your customers but this first impression wasn't good. Your parking situation needs to be addressed. De Lacey is a narrow street not conducive to valet parking especially when I am in a wheelchair. The parking structure had a "Lot Full" sign out at 6:30 PM while cars were lined up exiting this structure. This was the place I was told to use by your staff. Our waiter was attentive, knowledgable, and someone I knew from another restaurant."

  • "The only comment I would make is that the place is primarily for those who like traditiona/contemporaray french food. What is disappointing is the wine list - too expensive with high mark up. In France one can always order a good bottle of wine for a price of entree! Bring your own bottle."

  • "This was a real treat. Chaval lives up to its reputation for fine dining in the heart of Old Town Pasadena. The ambience is well appointed and the staff warm knowledgable and attentive. The food and drink are the ultimate measure of a restaurant and Chaval more than exceed my expectation for authentic French dining. Everything was high quality and tasty."

  • "Cheval Bistro is on my regular visit list. Food and drink are always superb and service is always attentive and prompt without being pushy."

  • "The decor is reminiscent of a Paris Bistro, very attractive. The service is poor. Our waiter mixed up our salad order, didn't listen and kept bringing extra plates AFTER we told him twice the plates were not needed; literally "dumped" the wine into a carafe, no delicacy at all, and then spilled the wine on the table trying to pour it. Worse, the waiter tried to be "cute" about his excesses. The quality of the wine selection is poor, which is inexcusable for a French restaurant. The food is adequate but highly over priced. Our lamb was properly cooked, but dry, and to our taste not properly seasoned. Go the Cheval Bistro for drinks at the bar, enjoy the decor, eat elsewhere."

  • "Cheval Bistro was lovely for brunch. Comfortable quiet setting with a French bistro feel. Nice varied menu with all the French standards (omelette, duck confit) but not overwhelming. A nice selection of champagne cocktails (a little pricey since they most likely use Champagne and not another sparkling wine), and good coffee. Birthday girls were treated to a special dessert of profiteroles with Birthday wishes and a candle; a very nice touch. We probably didn't need the delicious Grand Marnier souffle we ordered, but oh well, we were celebrating; and it was worth it"

  • "If you are still one of those people who like French food and don't want to drive to the west side and you want a change from Bistro 45, cheval is for you. Their portion is completely American that my husband and I always split the main dish and it is more than enough. My favorite is duck confit."

  • "We have happily been going to Cheval Blanc for years. But something has changed - certainly in the kitchen and the ambience has become jaded too. I got a sense of this on a visit last August but told myself it must have been an off-day. It seems not. In February this year we went again. I ordered Coq au Vin. It arrived with chunks of white breast meat just plopped on top of a BBQ like sauce. The chicken had certainly not been cooked with the stew. No browning of the meat, no richness, no subtlety, no flavor from the vegetable/wine stock. I suspect the issues run deeper than one bad meal (my son's frites were stone cold and my confit starter was likewise cold). I've always liked this place and it's sad to acknowledge I won't be coming back."

  • "$190 with tip is a once or twice a year stretch for us, but worth it. The cliche French we ordered for fun ranged from very good to fantastic (beef bourguignon , pork chop, escargot, frisee salad, chocolate souffle). A click and a half below the very best experience I've had at some super fancy chef owned places (a dozen times in my life), but a click above the 'corporate fine dining' that's become common. Goofy neighborhood (OT Pasadena), but once in the restaurant beautiful wood and friendly service make up for it. Some of the rude-people-with-too-much-money-SO-bored-with-$18-cheeseburgers vibe, but that's to be expected I s'pose. Our waiter Raul was relaxed AND attentive. Good stuff."

  • "Cog au Vin was basically roasted chicken with wine sauce overit. The legs seemed more cog au vin than the breast which was juicy It didn't taste as if it were stewing awhile.. Served with carrots, little oinion, bacon and no starch. Better was the Duck comfit. Beet salad too simple and disappointing although the dressing was very good. There will be a next time because the food is good enough in case we are in the area and want French. Will try to starters next time - maybe make a meal of them. Wine llist corporate too. The room is lovely, There is a back bar worth seeing - from the old days. The chocolate souffle was delicious. Service seemed slow but friendly. We certainly will place this on a list to revisit but not soon."

  • "This is the second time that I have attended this restaurant. I arranged for a birthday dinner for a friend and the staff including the host were quite attentive. They always were near by if we needed anything. Many started with the duck confit salad and the two color beet salad. Lobster thermador was one of the specials and three of us ordered it. I brought a magnum of wine to start and we also ordered wine from their very nice wine list. It was not too large of a list. but was carefully chosen. The menu had about twelve entrees which included sea food, fish, lamb, cassoulet, beef steak and beef bourguignon. The have valet parking or you can park in the garage next to the restaurant. Give this place a try. I plan to go back."

  • "Food was average for a high quality restaurant. Our particular service was terrible. We sat down at 7:30 p.m. and got our entrees at 9:30 p.m. (It was a Saturday night.) Also the place was too noisy for my taste. We had to shout to communicate across the table. I think there are better alternatives."

  • "Nice diner, excellent service. Disappointed in the pomme frites that came with our steaks, they seemed very ordinary and fast foodish considering the price."

  • "Service was attentive but allowed a relaxed meal. Appreciated the personal card acknowledging my birthday (and the profiterole for dessert). Onion Soup was great as always. The Gruyere was very tasty. Beet Salad was great flavors. Duck Confit was very good as well however, it's really too bad that the kitchen obviously used bacon grease to prepare the fried potatoes and that overpowered both the aroma and more subtle tastes in the Confit itself.."

  • "Four of us dined on Saturday evening January 18, 2014. The food, in general, was barely adequate and grossly over priced. We had the appetizer cheese puffs which were good. Then we ordered a dozen oysters on the half shell. When the oysters arrived, they were on the small side and had a somewhat fishy taste. Special forks were brought for the oysters but not plates. When we had finished the oysters, they took away the serving dish but left the forks until the end of the meal. Two of us had the Beef Bourginogn which came with mashed potatoes. The beef was dry and over cooked. The Steak Frites was under cooked and small for $41.00. Just not a good experience for the money."

  • "This turned out to be a great little gem of a restaurant. The food was really good, the service was great and the ambiance was of a similar nature. I would recommend this restaurant for a special evening. I particularly liked the steak tartar."

  • "Four of us had dinner on New Year's eve. We started with a dozen oysters which were very fresh tasty along with an order of cheese puffs which were also very good. The salad and onion soup were ordinary and somewhat pricey for the serving size. For the main course we had two orders of the leg of lamb, one New York steak with peppercorn sauce and one small filet mignon with frites. The lamb was slightly under cooked when ordered to be medium. Both steaks were also under cooked when ordered to be medium. The filet had to be sent back for further cooking which never turns out right. This is a typical Smith Brothers restaurant which over promises and under performs."

  • "Cheval Bistro does all the classic French Bistro menu items wonderfully. Steak frite was perfectly oreoared filet mignon with great french fries, skinny and salty and green beans good enough to eat. French onion soup, said one of the people at our table who ordered it, "the best he's ever had." The smoked salmon appetizer was enough for an entire meal. But don't forget to save room for their souffle's. Both Chocolate and Grand Marnier were worth the 30 minute prep/wait time."

  • "Cheval is usually one of the best French restaurants in the area, however on this night the food was not up to par. Perhaps this was due to the large crowd. The escargots were not the usual -- no garlic, only butter and parsely, and one shell did not even contain an escargot. The gougeres were not up to snuff either. The waiter was very apologetic and really saved the evening for us.We will be back to give it one more try. Every restaurant has one off night."

  • "My family was looking for a special place to dine for X-mas eve. Upon our first arrival, we had to wait for 5-6 minutes before a hostess greeted us. She then interrupted our conversation mid-sentence to pay attention to another party, very odd. When we were seated, she was still distracted away by who-knows-what. Then, although the food was outstanding, the entire dining experience was forgettable. Two of us were early and chose to sit at our table to wait. There was no attention paid to our table for at least 20 minutes. Most likely the waiter thought he'd wait for the entire party to arrive when we actually wanted to order wine and have appetizers on the table. Service was just mediocre. Dining experience overall was a zero."

  • "Christmas Eve is a busy night so the restaurant was full. Alot of large groups so the noise level was a bit louder than usual. The food was delicious. Steak Frites, escargots---yummm!! Our waitress was great."

  • "I don't know what I was expecting, but to say this was a sublime evening would be to understate. A beautiful space decorated as from an earlier and more refined time. A service both understated and professional--with a decidedly old world style. A varied menu of authentic preparations with French dishes genuinely French rather than tricked out for a California "style." A judicious use of Dijon mustard enhances several offerings, including the mussels & fries. A wine list with both domestic and French bottlings in varied styles. A moderate price point on both food and wine make it a must for repeat visits."
