Chestnut20th Anniversary DinnerTerrific food, wonderful service! Highly recommend!6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMKale and fried Calamari SaladKale and fried Calamari Salad was excellent. Very crispy Calamari and crunchy kale. For dessert I had the cheese cake which
was very light and creamy with a berry sauce.6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMRobert was our server - excellentRobert was our server - excellent suggestions and attention. First time at Chestnut - Pickled Fried Green Tomato stack with pimento cheese between the tomato layers appetizer was outstanding! The pickling made it! The petite sirloin was seasoned and cooked to perfection. The best I've had in years!6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMPerfect experienceThe making of reservations, the confirmation calls, the service ,food, atmosphere, and staff accommodation was ALL outstanding! It was the perfect place to celebrate a graduation with family and friends6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMOnce again, it was all spectacularWe had family in from out of town to celebrate our daughters high school graduation and though we could have picked any restaurant in town, we chose to bring our group to Chestnut. The swordfish, airline chicken, steak and Sunburst trout were all outstanding. The waiter was very personable and knowledgeable. We enjoyed him very much. The entire experience was very positive, as always. We have eaten here on numerous occasions and always bring our out of town guests to Chestnut. They love it, too.6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMMemorable evening......We celebrated my son's graduation and his 88 yr. old gma was there also. I had requested a table with easy access for her and we had a table by the window.....perfect. Robert was our server....he was fantastic and made our evening so special.6/5/2013 12:00:00 AMWas greeted with a Brie andWas greeted with a Brie and Havarti fondu which was a delicous. Love the seasonings they use in their dishes. Was especially surprised by their collard greens! Would go back again.6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMAs other reviews have noted,As other reviews have noted, Shane is an asset to Chestnut. Both dishes we had (steak & mahi-mahi) were very good. I wish they had come to the table a little hotter. Given the quality of the food & preparation and the location in downtown Asheville, I'd say this place is a winner.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMLoved the menu - great optionsLoved the menu - great options across the board for many pallets / multiple options for full or half entree selections
Crafted drinks were a hit for both my wife and I -
We will come back6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMSimply outstandingWe made reservations and were promptly seated. Our server (blond guy from St. Croix) was great-good beer recommendations and completely steered us in the right direction regarding the menu. He checked in with us just the right amount and let us linger and order medium plates slowly. We never felt rushed and were there for over 2 hours. The mussels were phenomenal as were the lobster risotto cakes.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMGood food and serviceWe enjoyed our dinner there. The kale salad was great. They brought us a small cheese ball and that was also very tasty. Eggplant was good but a little too rich with all of the goat cheese. My daughter can not eat gluten and they offered choices including a dessert which she loved, lemon bar with lavender ice cream. Overall good food and I would recommend this restaurant.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMFood and service are alwaysFood and service are always top notch. Asheville has many wonderful restaurants and Chestnut near the top.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMDesserts are WeakWe had a great meal at Chestnut. However, the desserts weren't up to either the price nor expectations. This is the second time we were disappointed. For some reason, their sister restaurant, The Corner Kitchen, has better desserts.5/30/2013 12:00:00 AMThe restaurant's bright andThe restaurant's bright and vibrant atmosphere matched the food --- Modern American with a North Caroline twist. We enjoyed infused cocktails, pickled fried green tomatoes, and our entrees (trout, swordfish, and a vegetable stack). The food was delicious and the atmosphere was pleasant for conversation. The waiter was not very helpful and a bit too eager.5/28/2013 12:00:00 AMGood place to dineExcellent and novel food ...well done! Real kudos to the bartender...great and unusual mixed drinks.5/27/2013 12:00:00 AMDelicious food/friendly serviceSalmon and fried eggplant plates. Everything was delicious, and our server was enjoyable and attentive. Even though he didn't know exactly how to make it at first, the bartender made a fantastic Moscow Mule.5/27/2013 12:00:00 AMFood and service were bothFood and service were both good; only issue would have like entree to have come to table "hotter" it was warmer - dropped temp quickly.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMgreat food and ServiceWith any great restaurant service has to be spot on for it to survive and this place has to have the best server in Asheville. Shane was absolutely delightful and was great an recommending our selections but had a way of engagement that made us feel welcome and appreciated.
The food choices were just right but there are specials that one must try since they should be on the menu permanently... they were that good.
If visiting Ashville, go here for one of your dining options... if you live there, then you should already know about it.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Meal...One of the best meals I have had in a long time. Everything from the wine through dessert was top notch. I highly recommend the Salter Caramel Tart, my lips are still watering thinking about it.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat for Lunch; Noisy for DinnerWe had a wonderful late lunch (3pm) here. They pulled out all the stops to make it a terrific occasion and the food and service were excellent. We really appreciated everything. However, members of our party have been to dinner at this restaurant and advised that it is so loud (so much noise) that despite the excellent food and service, dinner is simply not worth it.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMNot just great food...Chestnut is more then just food, it is a true experience. The timing between plates allows for great conversation with friends. You do not feel rushed to eat and get out. Shane is an amazing Server. He is fun, entertaining, and builds great rapport with the table. The Lobster Bisque is AMAZING!! Great cocktails too. Thank you for a great experience.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMBrunch= Awesome! As we were looking aver the menu picking from everything that sounded so great, our waiter told us about the special today! Brisket Hash with BBQ Hollandaise and poached eggs!!!! We were sold at Hash, and! It was AMAZING! It was perfect for brunch, and we will be going back to try the rest of the menu! Service was excellent, atmosphere was sophisticated and relaxed, and I overheard the couple behind us saying they were back for the second day in row. Our waiter even recognized them, and that speaks volumes to me!5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMThis was our second time atThis was our second time at Chestnut and it we enjoyed just as much as the first time. Our server Shane was awesome and not only took good care of us the entire time but was also hilarious! If you have not been to Chestnut I highly recommend you try it out. Brunch was delicious and not overpriced like many places in Asheville.5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat additionIt was nice to see that they used real chestnut in much of the paneling lending authenticity to the restaurant. Duck confit jicama slaw salad was tasty and unique. The seafood entree was excellent and fresh although slightly spicy (although probably not for the average spicy food lover.) Korean ribs had great flavor but were somewhat dry. Despite the comments here, overall the food was very good and we would return. Service seemed a bit harried (replaced silverware delayed, water glasses empty, etc.) but it was busy, the servers all pitched in to help one another and were friendly and very knowledgeable about both the wine and food. Specialty cocktails were good especially the sidecar.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMhip, upscale restaurant withhip, upscale restaurant with interesting menu and neat atmosphere; can order larger versions of small/medium plates if desired; great peanut butter pie5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMGood & fast!Really liked the food and service was great but..........we were in and out a little too fast.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMAnother FindFor years we have enjoyed dining at the Corner Kitchen in Biltmore Village. When we made the choice of their new restaurant downtown instead of our old favorite, we were a little apprehensive that it might not measure up. But we found the food to be very good, the menu varied with medium plate choices, and the atmosphere very different but equally enjoyable. And having wine half price on Wednesdays was a great surprise! Now we'll have to find space in our travels for both venues.5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMThis is one of our favoriteThis is one of our favorite restaurants in Asheville. Great food, wonderful service and the souffles are the best anywhere!!!5/14/2013 12:00:00 AMWent for brunch Mother's Day.BreakfWent for brunch Mother's Day.Breakfast was very Good.Eggs benedict were cooked and prepared perfectly.
Donuts were very doughy....heavy and not very good.
Service was slow and not very good...Mother's day can be like that.
We would recommend.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMWe had a great time. WonderfulWe had a great time. Wonderful food, unique menu with an amuse and home baked bread.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMMother's dayMy daughter and I had a lovely time. We each had the beet salad - I had lobster cakes and she had smoked salmon. Also had the bread basket which we paid for - should have been free, especially for Mother"s Day! Too full for dessert.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMParty of EightMade reservations about three weeks in advance and they called the day of to confirm. They were able to accommodate us earlier than our reservation and had table all set for us. Food was excellent. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal. Service was great. Would definitely go back.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMOur best dinner in AshevilleChestnut has a very pleasant ambiance and the interior is nicely decorated. The food was fresh and delicious. It's worth paying the $3 for the bread basket; the rolls seemed to be freshly made and were great. We had two entrees, a chicken dish and the trout. Both were perfectly cooked and we thoroughly enjoyed our meals. We highly recommend Chestnut.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMCreative Cuisine in a Great SettingMy husband and I stopped in for a mid-afternoon lunch. They were very acomodating even though we came in at an odd time (between lunch and dinner). We were very pleased with the friendly service and overall ambiance. The lobster pot pie was excellent. The seafood cakes were OK. They have a great draft beer selection.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat addition to Asheville dining!First visit and all four of us enjoyed our meals. Salads were uniquely prepared with fresh ingredients. Entrees were perfect: Korean Ribs, High Country Boil, Mussels in Thai Curry, and Salmon. Not a bite left on our plates. Dessert was over the top delicious. Lemon Curd Cheese Cake with Blueberry Sauce and Apple Pie. YUM! We'll definitely come again.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMVery Pleasant Dining ExperienceWhile I had heard complaints about Chestnut, my own experience is such that I don't think they are justified. Unfortunately, the service can be a bit slow to excruciatingly slow.
Most recently, the service was adequate, but not great. The food, however was very good. Mussels were plump, well seasoned, and plentiful. The beet salad with goat cheese was wonderful as was the kale with calamari.
Overall, it was a very good experience.5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMNICE FIND ...We live in the Asheville area and love Corner Kitchen which is owned by the same owner as Chestnut, so thought we would try it for lunch. The restaurant is in a very old building but with very modern decor and furnishings. We liked the idea of booths for two. Staff were all very friendly and service was excellent. The food was very good, although I had to send my undercooked burger back. I find that my medium to well done requests often come back undercooked by some chefs! The lobster bisque was delicious and the lobster pot pie was also very good. We also thought the food prices were reasonable.5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMGood choicesOne thing that impressed me about the menu was that a person could literally make
a meal off the appetizer list, called the "medium plate" menu. We did not, but we did order
an appetizer and it was huge.5/6/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat PlaceWe were in Asheville for a long weekend and wanted a nice meal. Inside is very neat looking and the food was great. Service was very attentive but not overbearing.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMGood food; mostly straightforward;Good food; mostly straightforward; all nicely prepared. Service friendly; perhaps a tad hurried.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMDelicious take on southernDelicious take on southern comfort food that is sourced locally, as well as lovely service!4/28/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent! Absolutely thinkExcellent! Absolutely think that Joe & Kevin have done it right -- wonderful food, great touches and a new gem in Asheville.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMWe'll Be Back!A guest and I were both impressed with Chestnut and happy with our dinners. The restaurant is simply designed but pretty and welcoming. Hostess and wait staff were friendly and helpful. We both had fish, beautifully cooked, with interesting seasonal treatments. Desserts were good but not quite up to the standard set by the entrees. We will definitely return.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMFood and service were good.Food and service were good. The "energetic" noise level was distracting and not conducive to conversation; however, it was 9 PM on a busy Saturday night so the place was hoppin'. It's probably somewhat quieter on a less busy night.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMVery happy with our experience.Very happy with our experience. We had our two kids with us and were nervous about that but we were treated very well. The head chef or owner came over and played with the kids and offered a basket of bread to keep them entertained. It was great!4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food, however dessertGreat food, however dessert was very sweet; it was salted caramel chocolate torte and tasted sugary not salted caramel or chocolate.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMVery good new restaurantFirst time at Chestnut. Went because I like Corner Kitchen, their sister restaurant. Food was very good. Love that they have medium and large plates in addition to appetizers. Had the shrimp wrapped with prosciutto and the roasted beet & goat cheese salad. My friend had the lobster bisque and lobster cakes. Salted carmel tart with chocolate ganache for dessert. All were delicious. Our waitress was pleasant and helpful although we waited too long for our check. It was a busy Friday night, some won't hold it against them. The ambience is lovely in an old renovated building with high ceilings and old wooden floors. The noise level was very energetic and loud. We sat in a two person booth so we could hear each other. We recommend it4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMNo space here for adequate praiseWe went to Chestnut to support Dining Out for Life, and were glad we did. We met a friend for an early dinner. The menu shows a little sense of humor, and everything we experienced there bore that out. They tell you that the petit fillet is really petit, and they're not kidding, though it might be just right for a small appetite. They have some inventive and tasty cocktails, and a small but probably quite good wine list. I was unfamiliar with most of the wines, which is good, because you don't want a wine you can buy at the grocery store. Our very friendly waiter made an excellent recommendation. I was going to say some other nice things about this place, but Open Table won't allow me space. Great for fish.4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMSit in the back if it's crowdedSit in the back if it's crowded and you want to talk. But it was a particularly festive night.4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMDowntown DelightGreat restaurant owned by the folks of Corner Kitcshen fame. Previously had been here for Brunch and this trip was for Lunch. Nice options on the menu to select from, and all four of us were quite pleased with our lunch experience.4/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
